Ryan Howard sets new team record, positioning Phils for wildcard

The incredible season that Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard is having is awe-inspiring. His 3-run homer yesterday lead the Phillies to a 10-6 win against the Nationals. Howard leads the Majors with 48 homeruns while racking up 125 RBIs. The only other players in baseball which comes close to those numbers is David Ortiz, who's one homer sly of tying him and Alfonso Soranio (42). Tuesday was a big day for Howard who set a career and team mark, breaking Mike Schmidt's record for most dingers in a month.

Philly is only a half game behind the Reds for the wildcard. They're fighting tight competition, posting a 66-65 record. A mere game above .500 have not cut it to claim the final playoff spot in the NL. With the Padres and Reds winning about half their games in the last few weeks, the tension could be so high that it would blow a gasket. With the recent success of the Marlins they too could very well be back in the race.

Anything is possible with teams in the West even though the Dodgers look to have a lock on the pennant. You can rest assure that Ryan Howard will continue to put up big numbers and do everything in his power to lead the Phillies into the postseason for the first time in over a decade. If anything in the NL deserves this spot it's definitely the Phils. NL pitchers better be ready to watch out for the relentless blasts out of the ballpark from Ryan Howard.

Off topic: Are there too many 'Joses' in baseball?

Foreign athletes have spread throughout baseball like wildflower in the last decade. They're becoming more part of the game than the white or African American athlete. I like diversity in the game, there is nothing wrong with that. What I don't understand is why so many Mexican and Hispanic players are named 'Jose' or 'Juan'. What was there no other good alternative names when these players were born? One day it's going to cause a real problem on the baseball field.

Coaches and managers will have so many players with the same first name (maybe even last name too) that they'll put in a reserve player during a game and lose track of what foreign players are already in the game. Yeah, it's going to be confusing when two players look alike, especially if they're twin brothers with the same name. Talk about a lot of pressure during late innings when a coach needs to pull a pinch hitter and mistakes the Jose who's hitting .209 for the other twin with a .318 average and high on-base percentage. Talk about a lot of explaining to do after the game.

If I compiled a list of current Major Leaguers with the same first name it would be staggering. The same goes for a list of those foreign players without a green card. I'm not saying Major League Baseball would be better off without a stock load of Cubans, Mexicans, or Puerto Ricans who just so happen to be near identical in appearance and speak the same native language. It would help, however, if they compromised a unique nickname so everyone could tell them apart. Believe me, this would save everyone a headache. Coaches wouldn't lose track of bench players or get mixed up about what players are on the field, umpires wouldn't mistake 2 similar short tan infielders as one player and call both out on strikes before the second batter sets in at the plate.

Baseball has welcomed many diverse athletes from all walks of life ever since Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier. Times have change since and now the foreign population in the sport is almost becoming too abundant. They tend to take away other American players' jobs away. The American utility player is a rarity, leave it to Jose, Felipe, or Juan to take over that designated position for less money each year. The national pastime may be an American tradition, but it's long contributed to a mult-cultural passion too.

Team USA crushes Senegal, 103-58

Thursday the NBA's finest made easy work of Senegal, in route to a big victory. They set their next sights on Italy. The top scorer for the team was Chris Bosh, who finished with 20 points. Dwayne Wade sat out while Lebron James (17 points) and Carmelo Anthony (12 points) played limited minutes. The younger guys off the bench like Hinrich and Johnson got extra playing time. Coach K has got these guys playing inspired basketball. This doesn't mean their test is over.

Up next on the schedule is Australia on August 27. Right now Team USA is finishing up play in Japan. Earlier this month they beat Yao Ming and China 121-90. They've got to be feeling good about themselves, being 5-0 and all. On any given night any player on the starting five could be the top scorer. They've got so many offensive weapons and their defense is good all-around for the most part. The real competition for the U.S. are Spain, Greece, and Argentina. They're all undefeated in World play. Keep going strong U.S.A.!

The curse of the Yankees

Unfortunately, for the Boston Red Sox they had a bad weekend. In another highly anticipated series against the Yanks at Fenway Park things didn't work out as planned. Instead gaining ground on their division rivals they got sweep. I can only imagine the woes they're experiencing in Boston. It always hurts to lose to an opponent that has a rich history of winning and that most teams despise. Those damn Yankees slaughtered the ball in the 3-game series. They were probably ran out of town by enraged Boston fans.

I feel for the Red Sox, I really do (mainly because I'm a Cubs fan and have dealt with heartache and disappointment for so long). Big Pappi is at the top of his game, but the rest of the team has having breakdowns here and there. Well, for the most part it's the starting pitching. Josh Beckett walked 9 batters and allowed over 7 runs in the first game at Fenway. A 69-55 record is good for any club, but in the AL East it doesn't guarantee a playoff spot. Even Toronto is making a little progress, 10 games back. They could very well catch Boston in September. I don't want to see that happen.

The Red Sox will try to get their act together as begin their road trip today against the Angels. It become real serious as American League teams are pushing hard in contention for the postseason. Kyle Snyder (3-2) gets the start for Boston against Joe Saunders (4-1). With Ortiz and Manny swinging hot bats the Red Sox will be okay if they stick to their game plan. Good luck in the AL race Red Sox!

Mets' fan sneaks into games with fake press pass

Unless you buy a ticket it's hard to get into ballparks as a fan. As a member of Press there a few restraints. A creative, eager 18-year-old from Suffolk County in New York impersonated a reporter by using a fake I.D. card or pass as a media employee for NBC Universal. He got busted after Mets officials became suspicious and contacted sources to check his credentials. This kid was crafty to come with the idea, but I don't think it will be worth the risk in the long run. He is expected to appear in court next month, where he faces up to 7 years in prison for accounts of impersonating a media official, criminal possession of a forged instrument, falsified business records, larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, and criminal trepass.

The 18-year-old fan is under a lot of heat. This week he told Mets officials he worked for NBC and was able to watch a game between the Rockies and Mets Friday before being arrested and a game against the Padres on August 10. Apparently, the fan posed as a reporter and used his fake credentials to talk to some of the players before and after the game. That must have been cool, but his scheme back fired and now he's got to suffer the consequences. I'm surprised someone hasn't tried to pull this stunt before now. The next thing that will happen is some bozo will dress like one of the team mascots to get in the game. Don't ask me how they'll do it, they just will.

You have to be smart to be a great criminal and scam people. Too many average Joes what to try their hand at scam artistry. Usually their plots never work out and they end up broke and serving long-term jail time. The teenage fan has probably learned his lesson. I don't think it will be a wise move for violent drunk fans to try to sneak into games in the future. They'll just cause too much of a scene. Besides it will look out of place for a professional sports reporter to sock a mascot with a bat or lock him in a choke hold while yelling obscenities.

All-out brawl erupts in Texas

With the race heating up in the AL West tension reared until it came a boiling surface Wednesday night as the Rangers and Angels duked it out in Arlington. Texas starting pitcher, Vincente Padilla first provoked the Angels starting lineup by plunking two of their batters in early innings. The Rangers pulled off a 9-3 victory after it was all said and done. Due to the beanings Angels' coach Mike Scioscia and the Padilla were ejected.

A bench-clearing brawl unfoiled were Angels' second baseman Adam Kennedy was hit in the back by Rangers' reliever Scott Feldman. Everyone tried to get in on the heated exchange. Kennedy charged the mound only to make by a punch to the armpit? (Who punches someone in the armpit? These guys sound like children). Teammates tried to restrain those fighting around the mound. It was truly a display of poor sportmanship by both teams. Neither team should've been trying to purposely hit any player in the game.

Then again, I can't blame Adam Kennedy for retaliating because he thought the pitcher was trying to injury him. There is a thin line here and players know when it's being crossed. Of course, it couldn't have been is a real melee without one guy being a real asshole. This award goes to Mark DeRosa, who took it upon him to sprint like a madman and tackle Kennedy from behind. What a cowardly act! This jerk should be ashamed of himself. Both teams really suffered the consequences. The Angels lost their hitting coach and another pitcher from the bullpen, being ejected after the brawl and the Rangers had 3 or 4 players tossed. Texas came out on top, though no one was really a winner.

Team USA undefeated in World play

The NBA's Team USA is getting back it's old form, with an elite all-star cast taking over. Posting recent blowouts over Korea, Lithuania, and Brazil the young stars of basketball like Wade, Lebron, and Melo are showcasing their skills and out to prove they're the best. Today in the win against Korea Lebron James scored 23 points 10-for-12 shooting. That is unbelievable! The second highest scorer on the team was Dwayne Wade, finishing with 16 points as did Elton Brand.

Team USA will be heading to the championship in Japan. A few more cuts are expected to made on the team after the final exhibition game. Bruce Bowen is rumored to be one player on the list. The training and workout prior to the basketball schedule for the tournament really pay off. There is so much chemistry and camaraderie on Team USA. A can't imagine a better trio than Wade, James, and Anthony. They look serious and intent on bringing back home a championship trophy. Best of luck Team USA!

Busting cheap baseball owners' chops

It has come to my attention with the pennant races in progress that baseball stadiums are reaping high profit this time of year (well, for the most part all summer long they do). This means baseball owners are getting richer and richer. Even the Florida Marlins have a little chunk of change despite low attendances. The beef I have is with owners who are too cheap to pay for quality talent. They'd rather settle for mediocre replacements than position their team in contention for a playoff spot or at least finish the season with a shred of dignity.

I don't know why owners and GMs think can they pinch pennies and survive in the league, that's not how the system works. To be the best you're got to make wise sometimes hefty investments. That's why the same teams finish dead last or towards the bottom of the division almost every year. For instance, the Kansas City Royals swung a few deals to retrieve Reggie Sanders and Doug Mientkiewicz. These are supposed to be the two big stars on the club. Well, one is now injured. The point is Kansas City wouldn't stand a chance in hell of claiming 3rd place even if the AL Central wasn't so hot this season. For them to grow and prosper they'd have to start giving up a few top prospects for the right mixture of talent.

Over in the NL the Pirates and Nationals are going absolutely no where. The team owners have made a few trades, but for low-market players who can't single-handedly pull them out of the gutter. Before the trade deadline everyone anticipated that Alfonso Soriano would be traded. The Nats did make a smart move by keeping him. There isn't anyone else really big-name on Washington so it's going to take some enticing on their part to sign other star players in the off-season. Pittsburgh has a good crop of young prospects, however they still are stinking up the league due to lack of chemistry and veteran leaders. Their blockbuster deal before the deadline was trading Sean Casey to the Indians for some practically unknown, low-level player. The new ballpark hasn't linked any success over onto this team either.

I'm just so fed up with seeing underdogs continue to struggle year after year (especially the Cubs), falling to their demise before mid-season while cheap ass owners sit back in their nice, comfy luxury boxes and accept losing because either way they collect a fat paycheck. There are no rules or policies in baseball to force teams to spend extra revenue on acquiring new players, which guarantees that these clubs will go on sucking for the next decade or longer.

Marlins' prospect already ruins career before it starts

Top Marlins' prospect, Jeff Allison had a bright future ahead of him. Then he had to make the ultimate mistake. Raising more eyebrows on 'acts of stupidity' in baseball, this week the 21-year-old overdosed on heroin. He was found on the bathroom floor of his apartment unconscious by a friend. Then he was rushed to the hospital. Medford police in Boston found piles of drug paraphernalia in Allison's room. How crazy is this kid? He's willing to risk his life and professional baseball career just to get a wicked buzz.

With all the focus, for the most part right now on the steroids investigation leave it to one of these minor league players to go and do something obscenely stupid. Now attention has to be put on all drug use and misconduct. These players today think they can get away with everything, taking things for granted like not getting caught getting high on weed or odd powdery substances in clubhouses. Sure no one will know their secret until they're laid sprawled out on the floor motionless. I can't possibly understand why any player would think drugs such as heroin will help them perform better.

If anything veteran players need to set the right example for rookie and minor leaguers, who are naive and too influenced by peer pressure. Allison may have squandered a meaningful baseball career, unable to see the light of day outside the Marlins farm system. This further incident of drug addiction/abuse should teach other players to stay away from harmful substances and not gamble with their life.

Still, it won't surprise me either when the baseball world gives the Bonds case and steroid investigation their undivided attention if players use this opportunity to freely and casually smoke weed, chronic, blunts, crack, and whatever they can get their hands. They may even sit right in the dugout, satisfying their sick addiction DURING A GAME without even realizing it because they'll be so high. Major League Baseball nor any sport for that matter will never have control over this rising problem.

Baseball miracles don't come often in Detroit

After sustaining one of the longest drought in baseball history, the Detroit Tigers finally look ready to win a championship. However, it may not come in 2006. The club has climbed out of the sewer and straight to the top of the ladder. At 76-36 the near future is looking brighter and brighter. Detroit is currently 10 games in front of the White Sox for first place in the AL Central. Maggilio Ordonez and Ivan Rodriguez have led the way.

Ordonez has a team-leading 79 RBIs with 16 homeruns. The quality veteran leadership from Rodriguez is a key ingredient in the Tigers' success thus far. He makes the big plays late and delivers with clutch hits when they matter the most. Lately, though it's been the young players like Brandon Inge and Marcus Thames who've been fueling the offense. In Monday's 9-3 victory, Thames hit a solo homer to push his total to 21. Also left fielder, Craig Monroe is having a good season.

I think the Tigers will set a record in franchise history for the most wins in the regular season. It's been a long wait since the city has seen this team win a pennant or championship. This appears to be the year they do it. Detroit will face the White Sox, Red Sox, and Rangers up next on their schedule after departing Minnesota.

Mark McGwire further resists cooperation in steroid investigation

Gone are the days when former St. Louis Cardinal and Oakland Athletic, Mark McGwire swung mightily in a batter's box, hitting homeruns left and right. Retiring too early was a quick way out for McGwire. It was obvious his body was wearing down after 1998 and his age was becoming a factor with his health. On the other hand, so was the harmful substances he used to obtain high athletic performance. After refusing to comment during the congressional meeting in Washington D.C. a few years back the former Major League star still finds himself being cornered by Congress.


Senator Jim Mitchell, who is conducting an in-depth investigation in MLB tried again to ask for McGwire's participation and answering some questions, but the big galoot and his legal team declined. McGwire should be ashamed of himself, thinking it's not his responsibility to cooperate in this investigation and shed further light on a rising, controversial issue. Several players who've been suspected of steroid use are left out of the picture as well. Congress needs to interrogate Gary Sheffield, Sammy Sosa, Greg Vaughn, and Juan Gonzalez. They were all right in the thick of things during the late '90s.

Until enough pressure is used nothing will ever change because guys like McGwire won't bulge a bit, refusing to be a part of any negative publicity or event. Since his retirement McGwire has become like Barry Bonds, always dodging questions concerning his past. If he used banned illegal performancing enchancing drugs he might as well come clean. I'm sure people will eventually forgive me instead of always wondering whether he robbed fans and baseball of special moments by cheating. For the game's stake, let's hope that will hold true on down the road.

Big Pappi sends message repetively with walk-off blasts

There is no doubt in my mind that David Ortiz is a God Send to the Boston Red Sox. Without his mere presence in the lineup the Yankees be several games ahead in first place in the East. Ortiz continues to serve an example to pitchers in the AL, sending a loud clear message: You pitch to me in crucial situation you pay. The Boston slugger leads the Majors with 37 homeruns. He already has 105 RBIs! Is this guy amazing or what?

Nobody in the league can stop Big Pappi. He's such a patient, powerful hitter that has a flare for the clutch. Nobody knows his weaknesses because they have yet to be discovered. Despite the 6-3 loss to Cleveland Tuesday night Ortiz went 2-for-3 with a walk. Monday night he slugged a game-winning 3-run shot in the 9th. That was his 14th homer in July. Big Pappi is going to help Boston reach the postseason for the 3rd straight year. AL pitcher better fear him because he can end a game in a hurry. The Red Sox are so lucky to have him. Go Bo Sox!

Baseball trades

This weekend a few teams swung some deals right before the trade deadline. The struggling Indians needed another bat so they picked up 1B Sean Casey from the Pirates. Of course, the Yankees in their lust for another pennant grabbed OF Bobby Abreu and pitcher Corey Lidle. What did the Phillies get? They received two prospects, a rookie catcher, and a right-handed reliever. The Phils got the short end of the stick on this deal.

This doesn't mean Philly isn't guaranteed to not make the playoffs, but it's going to a real mounting challenge for them in East because the Braves and Mets won't be set up for misfortune this season. The Cardinals also wanted to make a change in their infield so they traded Hector Lunar to the Indians for second baseman Ronnie Belliard. I don't think this move will make much difference. Their strength lies within Albert Pujols and their pitching staff.

Teams are going to be making runs in the last 2 months of the season. Rumors still circulate around baseball that Alfonso Soriano, Barry Zito, Miguel Tejada, and Greg Maddux could up next on the trade block. Well, for now that's all just speculation. You have to wait and see what happens. It should be interesting to see what players go or those who will stay.

Life on the road: Traveling without spare underwear

A day in the life of a Major League baseball player can be hectic. Making necessary travel arrangements, meal plans, sufficient wardobe packing, exercising, keeping in touch with family, and other obligations is overwhelming sometimes. Then again they're baseball players who make millions of dollars and get to travel around the country! What more could they possibly want? Players have certain odd ways of planning for road trips.

Take Detroit Tigers' closer, Todd Jones for example, the guy only carries one pair of underwear with him when on the road. This is not a smart decision for several reasons. Taking a bathroom accident for granted only can lead to bad things. Besides you've in quite a pickle if you have an explosion in your pants. Not only is a diarrhea a concern, but also having a rip or hole in your underpants. Fabric and cotton can only be stretched but so much. A pair of undies doesn't last forever either.

That's why it's so bizarre that a Major Leaguer would decide not to pack one of the most important items in his luggage. Being a pitcher and all, forced into a tight, pressure-filled situation during a game can cause anyone to crap their pants. You might just want that extra pair of boxer shorts or briefs available in case of such an emergency. Other players must have specific accommodations like the Mets' Mike Cameron who travels with air fresheners and scented candles, Ichiro Suzuki always carries a foot massager with him, and Shawn Green who is has a phobia if he doesn't carry his own soap, claiming his teammates are filthy. Can you really blame these guys?

These players are used to having luxuries and being pampered (except Todd Jones, buying a set of T-shirts and pants must be what this cheapskate considers slurging). I guess it's normal for players to have preferences and superstitions. Though when it gets to the point where they feel they shouldn't change their jock strap for 2 months then it becomes a serious problem. Life on the road for Major Leaguers is intriguing to say the least.

Seeking pennant in NL west, possible for any team

I've said it in a previous post that the AL West may be wide open this season. The same applies to the NL West. The D-backs, Giants, Rockies, Padres, and Dodgers are all fighting for first place. Usually I'd agree with anyone that Colorado doesn't stand a chance, but with the way things are shaping up it's not out of the question. At current, they're 6.5 games back in the division at 47-53. The club came close to two shutouts at home this week.

San Diego remains in first place. They're not guaranteed to finish at the top. Their pitching must hold up until late September. With Jake Peavy at the helm they're got a good shot even though they need consistency from the rest of the rotation. Mike Piazza and Brian Giles have to stay healthy as well. Their offense accounts for most of the run production. The Padres are up 2.5 on the Diamondbacks.

In third place are the Giants who are rely too much on Barry Bonds' power and the strength in the rotation from Jason Schmidt. If they want to have a competitive they need to strike another trade before the deadline. Otherwise their season could be up in smoke. Personally, I think the Dodgers have the best chance of coming back and claiming the division title. Sure, they're in last place, 7.5 games back, though they have the best lineup and rotation. As far as their bullpen I'm not so sure without a healthy Eric Gagne.

I can't wait to see what unfolds in the NL West. Which ever teams builds the most momentum down the stretch will probably win the division. With the issues surrounding Barry Bonds I'm sure it will be too big of a distraction to the team. It's turning out to be a close race in the West. No team is out of the picture yet.

A-Rod unappreciated in New York

It doesn't come as a shocker that Yankee fans and others within the organization are unsatisfied with Alex Rodriguez's performance as of late. The Bronx crowd has booed him because of errors at third among other meager mishaps. The Yankees have the highest payroll in baseball and will always obtain some of the best players on the market. So why are Yankee fans sour? They're not in first place in the East at 57-40. They're only 2.5 games back of Boston.

To complain that A-Rod is not performing well enough is absured. His number thus far is as follows: 21 homeruns, 72 RBIs, .500 .SLG, .279 AVG. I don't know why people expect him to outdo himself every season. Let's face it, A-Rod isn't going to hit 50 homers every year plus win a batting title and gold glove. Just forget about it Yankee fans. They should be happy with A-Rod's performance. He will be the key guy down to stretch if the Yankees are going to make a run at the playoffs. Any team would won't his bat in the lineup and will benefit from his veteran experience.

Sure he will make errors ocassionally, but that's not for lack of trying. The Yankees could very well catch the Red Sox by August and go neck and neck in the last 2 or 3 weeks of the season. Joe Torre has been in this situation before and has an idea of what to expect. Personally, I'm not a Yanks fan though I know they won't succeed without A-Rod. Without him in the middle of the lineup the team doesn't have that extra weapon. Power and hitting makes a big difference in crucial games.

With trade deadline approaching will Soriano be on the move?

Many rumors are buzzing in MLB as the trade deadline rolls around. Many teams are looking for that extra component that will put them in contention. Right now there is no doubt in anyone's mind that Alfonso Soriano is a hot commodity. He's on a tear, establishing another sensational year. Though could he be with the Washington Nationals for long? Inside sources have linked the star infielder/outfielder to Angels, Mariners, and Rangers. In the National League the Dodgers and Giants could very well go after him.

Soriano's talent is being wasted in Washington. His numbers speak for themselves, 24 homeruns, 61 RBIs, and 113 hits. He's also a good defensive player. Having a player who can hit for power with speed (25 SB) while possessing a reliable glove in the field is a rarity these days. He can play multiple positions as well. Soriano has bounced around a bit, playing for the Yankees, Rangers, and now Nationals. At age 30 he should around for a long time, bringing a productive bat and veteran leadership to any team. For those in the buyers market they better try to grab Soriano while they can.

Sosa says his career isn't over yet

Back in the off-season it seemed to be a sure sign that Sammy Sosa was set on retirement. He refused an offer from the Washington Nationals to sign as a l-year minor league contract. This didn't suit the former Cubs slugger, as he held out for more money. Why does money always have to the main criteria for signing with a new team? Sosa should be just wanting to play for the love of the game. Besides the numbers he put up in 2005 (14 homeruns, .221 avg. 45 RBI) with the Orioles have made his market value drop.

The point is Sammy isn't young and explosive anymore. He still can finish out the rest of his career with prestige and class if he can stay healthy and play clean (yeah, steroids or any substance or cream may be an issue). Sosa has been resting the past couple months with his family and visiting his old home in the Dominican Republic. You've got to believe those within the baseball community (MLB) have lost faith in Slammin' Sammy. Critics may feel he's washed up, no longer the prolific homerun hitter of old.

Sure Sosa will not crank out 40-50 a season anymore, but he can still be a valued asset on any club. It's up to him to get back into shape and be a hitter again by putting in the necessary time in the batting cages, practicing with veteran hitting coaches, and working out in the gym. For now, Sammy doesn't plan to quit at age 37. However he can't be picky either waiting for the right offer to come along. He may have to be humbled again and accept the best deal available. Otherwise there is no reason for him to return. Come on Sammy, forget about the stinking money!

Zo committs to Miami for another year

After basking in the glory of winning his first NBA Championship with the Heat, Alonzo Mourning has decided to stay with the team for at least another season. Opting out of retirement was influenced by the Miami fans. Their support over the years was too tremendous for Alonzo to just walk away from basketball now. I'm glad he wants to return for another season, especially as a member of the Miami Heat. Other teams did try to lure him away by offering lucrative deals, but the veteran center wasn't biting.

At 36, Zo still has a few years left in him to play in the NBA. Sure he's took a lot bumps, bruises, and endured his share of hardship along the way, though it's his will to never quit and strength that make him a surviver and champion. His story with the kidney ailment is truly inspiring. I can't think of a more admirable player in the NBA that deserved a second chance than Mourning. He earned an Championship title, no matter what anyone says.

With the big fella returning to the league next year and having teammates Shaq and Wade together again on the team, I like the Heat's chances of winning consecutive titles. Obviously, the Spurs and Mavericks will be right there in contention too. If Alonzo can put similar numbers (7.8 PPG 5.5 RPG 2.7 BPG) from last season coming off the bench the Heat will be okay. It doesn't matter what he does because I know the Miami fans will welcome him back with open arms, showing their appreciation for his years of committment and stellar play.

Travis Hafner continues to sizzle in second half

The Cleveland Indians may be 41-48 coming into Saturday, but with the power surging from Travis Hafner they have quite a potent lineup. If it wasn't for the breakout season of the Tigers or the White Sox this club would've had a good chance of clinching a spot in the postseason within consecutive years. Hafner is having an unbelievable season. He's already set a Major League record by hitting 4 grand slams in the first half of the season.

Hafner definitely got shafted by not being selected to the All-Star game. What a shame, this guy deserved to be at least a reserve off the bench. Today he hit a homer against the Twins to raise his total to 27. Few players in the game now can launch dingers as high and far as the Indians' first baseman. Hafner is having a career year, batting .324 with 75 RBIs and 69 runs scored. No one can deny his value to the Indians or any team for that matter.

Even though Hafner won't be able to lead his team to the playoffs he will have his share of season highlights while trying to help the 'Tribe finish above .500. Before the trade deadline if he was put on the market he'd be a hot commodity to grab, but Cleveland would be nuts to let him go. I think Hafner will have a secure home there for at least the rest of the season and next year if not longer. Hafner is one of today's top baseball stars to watch through September .

Bonds may no longer be a Giant, big deal!

Since a series of operations and a plagued injury last season, Barry Bonds looks to play in his last year with the Giants. He played 14 total games in 2005 unable to help his team reach the postseason. Bonds becomes a free agent in the fall and possibly could want to retire, leaving a legacy behind in San Fran. He would become a baseball legend and blah, blah, blah, so what? If you ask me it's more like he'll be leaving behind a dirty strain and a ugly mess filled with controversy, federal investigation, and perjury charges.

I don't see why anyone wants Bonds to break Hank Aaron historic homerun record. At 720 coming into the second half he still has a shot, but I don't see where doing so brings intregity to baseball. Whether he's guilty or not (yeah, probably so) the guy has never appeared honest and open with the media or the fans. He wants to hide the facts or try to cover up any illegal activity that's gone on behind closed doors. That's just not what makes a great Major League Baseball Player. Sure, players have lied in the past and will continue to do so in the future, but this involved cheating over a long period of time. The whole BALCO case originated back in 2003. That was plenty of time to take advantage of a quick, performance upper.

Barry didn't make an appearance at the All-Star game stating, "I don't want Pittsburgh to send me a farewell. Barry Bonds will say goodbye when he's ready."
Why does he still think fans care (Not talking about San Francisco fans). He needs to stop referring to himself in the first person as well, it just sounds ridiculous. Anyway, he should want to leave a lasting, positive mark on the game. Otherwise go ahead and retire Barry. We can all do without you.

Homerun Derby recap, replacements for All-Star game

All-Star festivies kicked off with the Old Timers game and the classic Homerun Derby contest. Sponsored by Century 21, participants had a chance to make some lucky fan go home happy by winning them a quarter of a million dollars towards a new home. It was a bash at PNC Park, the site of the 2006 All-Star game. After all the long balls left the yard it was the Phillies' Ryan Howard who walked away as champion. He even hit a sign (on his last homerun)winning a fan 500 plane tickets or rides on Southwest Airlines.

Of the slew of dingers hit, many crashed and bounced into the Allegheny River beyond the outfield in right-center. David Ortiz hit the longest bomb of all, estimated at 488 ft. The Red Sox slugger was hitting line drives like bullets. On the National league side Miguel Cabrera, David Wright, and Ryan Howard battled it out. Cabrera advanced to the second round after cranking 8 homeruns. David Wright launched 18 through the second round, but it Howard coming out the victor with 23 total homeruns. He hit 4 golden baseballs in the final round.

I thought that Ortiz was going to prevail in the end though he came up short. Jermaine Dye and Lance Berkman didn't get past the first round. The All-Star festivies will continue today. Due to a cut pinky Jose Reyes will sit out the All-Star game and Edgar Renteria will start. In the AL, the Twins rookie Francisco Liriano will replace Jose Conteras on the roster. This is a big break for Liriano who's 10-1 on the season with a 1.83 ERA. The kid deserves this opportunity, he's earned it.

Starting for the American league will be Kenny Rogers and for the National League, Brad Penny gets the nod. Some newcomers will also make an apperance in the starting lineup: NL- Carlos Beltran CF, Chase Utley 2B, and Jason Bay LF AL- Vernon Wells CF, Mark Loretta 2B. From the diverse crop of MLB talent it looks to be another thrilling All-Star game. Today marks the 77th game in baseball history.

AL West: Wide open at this point in the season

A few years ago the AL West was dominated by the Athletics and Angels. In 2006 it's been a different story so far. Each team is only within 4 games of each other. This could be the breakout year for the Mariners or Rangers. One thing is for sure, no team in the West is unbeatable. It could be a tight race coming down to the final month. Two players who I think will have the biggest influence on whether their team will climb to the postseason are Mark Teixeira and Ichiro Suzuki.

Ichiro is batting over .340 with 128 hits and 66 runs scored. He is the heart and soul of the M's. With an injury to Jeremy Reed after a diving catch attempt on Sunday the star outfielder must deliver more in the clutch and give his team a boost. Seattle is currently in 3rd place with a 42-45 record. The Texas first basemen is having another good season too. He's a valuable asset to the Rangers. They'd be crazy to trade him or get rid of him. Teixeira has helped Texas reach a 44-42 mark while hitting 8 homers with 47 RBIs.

It's going to be interesting to watch and see what happens in the second half. The Angels and Athletics have their share of history together and will probably duke it out down the stretch. With a healthy pitching staff and always dangerous Vladimir Guerrero the Angels will be a threat. Still I wouldn't count out the Rangers or the Mariners. They both have the offensive firepower to compete against any team in the league.

Bonds' trainer heads to jail...what an idiot!

Wednesday Barry Bonds' former trainer was arrested and ordered to serve jail time after refusing to testify to a federal grand jury investigating perjury against his client. Greg Anderson was already arrested in connection the BALCO case, pleading guilty last year to supplying illegal drugs to Bonds. He served 3 months in prison. I don't why he's protecting Bonds right now. He might as well just have cooperated.

First of all, this guy is obviously an idiot. He'd rather serve time in prison (though it may be short) than further rat out Bonds. Everyone knows he's a drug supplier and from his appearance a user too. Anderson is a San Francisco native who meet Bonds through a friend back in 2000 or 2001. That's why these two books stemming from the BALCO case and the secret dealings of steroid distribution sprung up.

I don't care what these baseball players today think, but the steroid issue isn't ever going away. People, especially the hardcore fans aren't going to ignore it. Congress is still conducting an investigation against Barry Bonds. Already this year reliever Jason Grimsley has been caught and suspended for 50 games. What a bone head move that was on his part. To me it seems like players are getting dumber and dumber. Why are the willing to risk their health (which should be utmost important), career, and fame. Ole' Bud Selig needs to take charge and hammer those who breaks the rules instead of putting cases on hold while MLB continues to reap billions.

Jose Canseco blasts MLB, tries to make comeback

When will the day end involving the on-going steroids conflict? I don't think ball players will completely stop using the drugs unless studies show an sharp increase in deaths from steroid users. For a while now, former Oakland Athletic, ex-Ranger, ex-Devil Ray, ex-White Sox, (who really knows or cares how many teams he's played for in his career) Jose Canseco has spouted off about MLB and how they are trying to cover up all these cases about players using illegal performance-enhancing drugs. He claims MLB is destroying players' careers, blackballing them as if they were so kind of criminal.

Well, well, I hate to tell Canseco, but all these players in recent years and in the past have hurt themselves. They are responsible for committing career suicide. It's not like they were forced into taking substances they were unfamiliar with or tied up and drugged. I realize Jose is mad because of what happened with the latter part of his career(which was mainly his own fault), consequently trying to avenge other Major League star players isn't the answer. He claims he wants to be the one to end this steroids debacle since he started it. What is he thinking, that all athletes are going to stop cheating or doing drugs because he's taking a stand?

Now at the age of 42, Canseco is attempting a comeback, playing for a fairly unknown minor league team in San Diego. For some idiotic reason the bulky Cuban is pitching as a reliever. Pictures from the minor league baseball practice site show him working on a knuckleball. What the hell! Old Cans better learn how to hit a freaking breaking ball again or off-speed junk. Otherwise he may get stuck in the minors. Apparently, Jose has got some slick business up his sleeve because he says he's in the process of producing a film and writing another book, claiming that this will stir up some fuss and create waves in baseball.

It's going to be a tough road back for Canseco into the Bigs if he continues to get heckled by unruly fans and gets injuried playing the outfield by either breaking a shin or getting banged on top of head while trying to catch a fly ball (hey, it happened years ago when he was younger). Oh, by the way, Jose watch out for those flying syringes onto the field!

Lebron given contract extension

The Cleveland Cavailers made a wise move this week by signing Lebron James to a five-year contract extension at $80 million. The franchise knew they had to keep the superstar interested to stay in Cleveland so a hefty investment was well worth it. This is good for the Cavs. This whole franchise will only reap success because of him. James has already pushed his team to the second round in the Eastern conference of the playoffs in only his third year.

The team finished at least 10 games above .500 this past season for the first time in nearly a decade. What's on the horizon with Lebron on board for the next five years? I know the 21-year-old has his mind set on winning on a championship. If there is anyone who could bring glory to the city of Cleveland it's James. His stellar play has positioned him near the top of the NBA league leaders in points per game, rebounds, and triple-doubles this year.

I think Lebron will give Cleveland more than they bargained for when it's all said and done. He's shown so much likeness to Michael Jordan that it's extraordinary. On the other hand, he's out to prove that he is one of the best in the NBA and wants to be known as a great all-around player and simply as Lebron "King" James, the one and only. I have feeling his name will be etched into the record books over and over in the coming years.

Ortiz delivers in the clutch, ensures win in extras

David Ortiz is a blessing for the Red Sox. This guy had came through with so many clutch hits late in games this season (as well as last 2 years). Last night against the Phils he got the big 2-out hit in the 12th to lead the Red Sox to victory, 8-7. He went 2-for-4 in the game with his presence having a bigger impact than his performance.

With Ortiz on board Boston is 45-28 while trying to take a commanding lead over the Yankees in the East. Saturday Ortiz also won the game for the Sox by hitting a walk-off homer against Philly. He is the second player this season to have consecutive game-ending hits (the other is Nomar Garciaparra May 5-6). So far, David Ortiz has racked up 22 homeruns, 74 hits, 50 runs, and 68 RBIs. What an impressive totals nearing the first half of the season. Big Papi is the "man" and will help lead the Red Sox to another playoff birth and possibly league championship.

Former Virginia natives, Inge and Shelton provide punch for Tigers

The Detroit Tigers are on a roll this season, boasting a 49-25 record. Coming off a win last night against the Cardinals they remained in first place in the AL Central. The WhiteSox trail them by half a game. Thanks in part to third basemen Brandon Inge and first basemen Chris Shelton the Tigers are having a banner year, looking to make a bigger splash in the second half. With the All-Star game fast approaching I wouldn't be surprised if Inge or Shelton were selected as a reserve.

As of yesterday, Inge has 16 homeruns which leads the team, and 41 RBIs. This guy is still young and can play multiple positions, a real versatile player to have on any team. His teammate, Shelton is having a breakout year. He's exploded in April and May, but has cooled off a bit lately. He still is providing enough offense and power for the Tigers. The slugger has managed 69 hits, 14 homeruns, and 34 RBI while batting .272. As a minor leaguer Shelton quickly accelerated through the Pirates' farm system before being signed by Detroit. He played Single A ball at Lynchburg then Altoona AA.

Looking to help turn the Tigers franchise around after coping with a couple disappointing decades, Shelton and Inge will be key ingredients in the team's success. They've already capulted the club to a better record at this time than last year. Their real competition in the division is the AL champs. In interleague play this week the Tigers sweep the struggling Cubs and took 2-of-3 from the Brewers, and now try to win the series against St. Louis.

The victims awaiting this hot club up next on the schedule are the Astros and Pirates to finish interleague play before heading on the road to face Oakland for a 3-game series. I expect with the recent injury to Ivan Rodriguez, the offense will pick it up a notch and Chris Shelton will get hot again. With Inge and Shelton at the hot corners the Tigers should be a safe bet to keep their winning ways alive.

C-e-le-brate good times, party is underway in Miami.

Mainly in part to the heroics of Dwayne Wade in the Finals, the Miami Heat are NBA champions! The parade in South Florida has already begun. Fans align the streets to cheer Shaq, Flash, and company as they earned their first championship in team history. A lot of credit should go to Pat Riley, who was instrumental from the time he took over, replacing former coach Stan Van Gudy. He put together a great versatile team. The Diesel predicted that he would help bring a championship to Miami 2 years ago. Luckily, for him he had an enormous boost from Dwayne Wade.

Miami put together a dynamic team with star quality veteran talent from top to bottom. The true shining superstar, however stood out on the biggest stage of them all. Dwayne Wade proved his one of the best in the game today, putting together an incredible series of performances in the Finals. He averaged around 37.0 points in the Series, pumping out scoring showcases of two 40-plus point games, 36 points, and 35 points. Without him the Heat wouldn't have made a 4-game run to win the title or came back from 0-2.

What's in store for Wade and Miami in the future? Nothing except gunning for another championship. It was nice to see the old veterans, Zo and Payton win a ring. These guys really deserve this honor especially Mourning. After suffering from a kidney ailment no one expected him to ever play again. His fighting spirit prevailed in the long run. Congratulations to the Miami Heat on an excellent season! They will continue to bring exciting, riveting play in the league next year.

Mark Cuban...what a douche bag!

After a loss to Miami in Game 5 of the NBA Final Mavs' owner, Mark Cuban allegely acted like a pompus jackass. Yelling and hollering at the refs then arguing and crying to Commissioner Stern, showed that Cuban is a sore loser. Yes, he's part of a great team that has much potential to create a dynasty. For his misconduct, Cuban was fined $250,000 by the NBA.

What is this guy's problem? He needs to shut up and let his team play. They've got plenty of talent and are very capable of making a comeback. Rumors are going around that Cuban was trying to rigg some games for the championship. He claims that is untrue. All that is just propaganda and distractions. The Mavericks are up against the wall, feeling the pressure down 3-2 in the series.

The Mavericks must win tonight to keep their season alive and chance at the title. It going to be a real heated, exciting contest back in Dallas. Let's hope Cuban isn't involved or connected to any foul play. Go Heat!

MJ back in the spotlight...so to speak

It's been a while since Michael Jordan graced the sport of basketball. His 2nd retirement was abrupt and disappointed so many fans who envied and idiolized him. There are new plans in Jordan's future. On Thursday he became a co-owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. It's something about North Carolina that seems to bring out the best in his "Airness", a place where he played college ball before being drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1986.

Luckily for the Bobcats franchise they now have a admirable leader and intelligent basketball-minded thinker who knows how to win. On the flip side, Charlotte will still need time to grow and prosper. They're far from being a contender in the league. Their main assets are their young, rising talent in Raymond Felton, Gerald Wallace, and Emeka Okafor. They're the future of the franchise.

Going back to old roots Jordan will try his hand again at managing a NBA team. After being a co-owner and President of operations for the Wizards from 2000-02 he came out of retirement and played for Washington 2 years. His presence wasn't enough though to enable the Wizards to clinch the playoffs. His tenure there wasn't the most memorable or glorifying part of his career.

With MJ at the helm, playing a major role in team operations things are beginning to shape up well for the Bobcats. After finishing 26-56 this past season things can only get better. Team management looks forward to working alongside Michael, hoping to benefit from his sound advice and instrumental value he'll bring to the table. For fans, the old MJ will return to the game he cherishes, but this time as a guy who works behind-the-scenes.

J.J. Redick's DUI not a factor in NBA Draft

As college students we've all done stupid things one time or another. Luckily, this week for former Duke star J.J. Redick his arrest for making an illegal U-turn while intoxicated won't effect his selection in the NBA draft. I'm sure he's learned from this incident and hopefully will grow to be a smarter, more responsible individual. He was fortunate not to have a serious accident, avoiding injury to himself or anyone else. That is extremely good news.

Redick was scheduled to have tryouts for Orlando, Boston, and possibly New Orleans this week. That will be delayed due to a bad back. Any team in the NBA would be lucky to grab him. Critics feel J.J. won't survive in the pros, claiming his too slow, not big enough, or a great defender. I think they're flat wrong. Over time this guy is going to rack up major points, maybe set 3-point records among others, and gradually become a good defensive player.

Life in the NBA probably won't be sweet at first for Redick. He'll have to deal with being on a struggling team which he's not used to at all. Getting adjusted to the tiresome schedule and being on the road will be a challenge. Redick averaged around 28 points his senior year at Duke. I don't expect him to do that his rookie year in the NBA, however he'll look to make a good first impression and have a positive influence on his team.

MLB hands Jason Grimsley 50-game suspension

I guess it comes as no surprise that another Major Leaguer is found guilty of using steroids. For Jason Grimsley, it's not a crying shame because he brought this upon himself. The Diamondbacks have given him the boot, refusing to tolerate his conduct and negative influence on the team. Bud Selig, despite his bad judgments in the past has actually made a good decision.

With the conclusion of the Grimsley case, I think a lot more baseball players will be getting caught. If they're stupid they will continue to use steroids, amtemphaines, or whatever they can get their hands on in the shady drug market. The problem is keeping intregity or bringing it back to the game. That's why Selig needs to take care of this investigation on Barry Bonds as well as crack down on other players who are still getting away with using illegal performance-enchancing drugs.

Allowing cheating, ignoring or putting it "on hold" is a travesty to baseball. If professional athletes want to continue taking risks by using drugs they'll have to suffer the consequences. They shouldn't be able to run rampit with deplorable behavior, secretly hiding drug supplies, sneaking off to meet their "dealers", and getting freaking high in the clubhouse. Baseball fans and the whole baseball community demand satisfaction and excellency.

Miami's strength: Wade may take a licking, but he keeps on ticking

The first game of the NBA Finals wasn't the best start for a championship series by either team. There were too many turnovers and not abundant offense. The Mavericks are up 1-0, carried by the scoring from Jason Terry, who put up 32 points in Game 1. Due to Dwayne Wade's recent ailment and Shaq's poor free-throw shooting (hey, he's never been more than a 50-60% shooter from line anyway) everyone feels the Heat are in trouble.

I will give credit to Dallas, they have an excellent offensive squad that can hurt any team from the inside and outside. Dirk Nowitzki brings so much to the table, he's a leader, offensive weapon, energy booster, crowd pleaser, and smart all-around player. With that said this doesn't make the Mavs formidable. Miami will still have to dig down deep and pull out some stops on defense and capitalize off turnovers on transition. Out in the open court on fast breaks they're hard to stop.

The central focal point of Miami's scoring attack is Dwayne Wade. I know he may not be 100% now, though he shouldn't be underestimated. When sick he's still a threat. His performance in Game 1 wasn't close to normal, though managed 28 points (11-25 FG, 6-10 FT) with 6 assists, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals. No one else on the team produced more than 17 points. Shaq shot a high percentage inside (8-11 FG), but didn't receive enough touches. The Big Fella and the rest of the gang will need to step it up a notch and relieve Wade from the weight on scoring.

Whether D Wade is completely rested, healthy, or not you can rest assure he will be bringing it with everything he's got in the tank. His speed will be a major factor. If he can get in the lane, split the defense, and rack up points fast the Mavs may have no answers. I don't expect much will slow Wade down. He's a gamer and a spirited competitor that will risk his body for a victory. No matter how many times he falls down he will get back up. It's going to be back and forth exchange Sunday night in Dallas. Wade and Shaq will try to even the series and return home with a brimming ray of confidence.

Ken Griffey Jr. sets record, cranks 2 homers in Reds' win

In the clutch Ken Griffey is one of the best hitters to have at the plate. His comeback to the Majors has been an uphill battle, but on Monday night he showed he still has got the groove by setting a record by hitting a homerun in 43 ballparks. The new Busch Stadium doesn't pose a degree of difficulty for Jr. who blasted a shot off Jeff Suppan in the 5th then won the game for the Reds with a 3-run homer in the 9th with 1 out off Jason Isringhausen (who sounded pissed off at himself after the game).

Thanks to Griffey and company the Reds are now 33-24 and look to take sole possession of first place in Central. The 8-7 victory last night was nothing compared to what the Reds have in store for the rest of the division and National League in the coming months. Griffey still remains one of the top feared hitters in baseball. I think he will fly by the 550th mark on the homerun list and make his way well past 600 barring he doesn't experience any more long-term injuries. At 36, Griffey is still a joy to watch.

The Heat say bring on the Mavs...or Suns

With a deciding Game 6 blow to the former Eastern conference champs Miami showed why they deserved to be the Finals. They took the series 4-2. This will be their first trip to the promise land. The All-Star cast lead by Wade and Shaq can sit back and relax as they wait for their opponent in the NBA Finals. Claiming stake to being the new Beasts of the East, the Heat have time to plan and strategize. It's sure to be a battle for the championship, whomever they face.

At current the Mavs are up in the Western conference series 3-2. They look to pull a victory out and advance to the championship. However, they shouldn't be too cocky or take the Suns for granted. With injuries to key star players I must admit, Steve Nash has been instrumental to this team. His play (along with Shawn Marion, Boris Diaw, and Tim Thomas)has propelled the Suns beyond reasonable doubt and normacy. The guy is always getting his teammates involved, looking to score second. He's averaging 18.8 ppg and 10.5 assists in the playoffs.

If the Heat do play Dallas in the Finals they will have their hands full with Dirk Nowitzki. His 50-point offensive explosion against Phoenix in Game 5 may be a glimpse of what's in store for Miami. I think Shaq will bring another strong scoring performance and crash the boards hard in the opening game of the Finals. I expect Dwayne Wade will be on another scoring clinic as well, since displaying such hot shooting (61% FG) against Detroit and averaging 27.2 points a game in the playoffs. The play of Antoine Walker and Jason Williams will be crucial in the Finals. Look for them to be a factor.

Learning from self-inflicted tragedy: The Doc Gooden saga

Gone are the days when a young, rising star which played on both New York baseball teams in the mid 80s to early 90s wowed packed crowds at stadiums. The pitching prodigy proved to be impressive, recording amazing strikeout totals and superb performances. Now a beaten man, Doc Gooden ponders where he went wrong while sitting in a Florida prison for violating his probation by smoking cocaine. The 41-year-old stated, "I'd rather be shot then come back to jail."

Gooden will serve just over a year in prison for his addiction. It's truly a shame the road the former star baseball player has gone down. Of all his battles and repeat occurrences with the law you would think he would have learned his lesson by now. The real question here is, what the hell is wrong with you Doc?!! Does the allure of crack outweight the importance of your life?

I hate to say it, but Doc is getting to be a charity case. No one should really feel sympathy for him. He has put himself in this uncomfortable position. Obsessions and addictions are tough to break, everyone can agree on that. On the other hand, there still comes a time in every man's life where you have to let things go and snap the hell outta your fantasy world. Doc, try hard to get a grip on your life and return to reality.

Thoughts on Ruth's historic mark being broken

Being a baseball fan is awesome, especially if your favorite team is winning. The best part about the game is it's rich history and the records set by baseball Greats. People, mainly watch baseball to see the long ball. It's always on their minds. Yesterday marked another historic day as Barry Bonds passed the Babe on the all-time homerun list with his 715th career homer. This got me to thinking about what the record means to true baseball fans.

It's no secret that most followers of the game aren't fond of Bonds. Some are adamant about how they feel, expressing themselves with obscene signs and exhibiting crude, blatant heckling. All the time, throughout the whole steroids investigation Bonds pretends the negative reaction in the crowd doesn't bother him on the field. Though, when questioned by reporters, Bonds' attitude and demeanor are clear. So now he has jumped ahead of Ruth to claim second place, only trailing Hank Aaron. Hitting another 40 homeruns isn't out of the question for Bonds, but it's going to be quite difficult. His health is an issue these days plus pitchers walk him so much he may not have a chance to tie or pass Aaron.

Most people really don't care if Barry breaks the record or not. They despise him because they believe he cheated to get where he is today. At the conclusion of the steroid investigation (whenever that may be, Selig doesn't look to get the bottom of this ordeal any time soon) pending he's found guilty, all the statistics and records he obtained will probably be cleared and disregarded. I know fans look for honor, integrity, and sincerity from star players, though Bonds doesn't exemplify any of these qualities. If he is found guilty of using steroids Major League Baseball should clear his name from the record books and recognize Babe Ruth again as the no. 2 career homerun hitter. This would be the righteous thing to do.

Have the Mets reached early season success?

Considering all the agonizing seasons of old the way the New York Mets have played through this season so far must make them feel proud. The confidence and morale level is up. They have a healthy lineup for the most part (with the exception of Cliff Floyd) with their stars beginning to prove their self-worth to the club. The Mets have jumped out to 29-19, 3.5 games ahead of the Braves. Carlos Delgado's 15 homeruns are helping provide the power on offense.

Today the Mets knocked off Dontrelle Willis and the Marlins 7-4 behind effective pitching from Tom Glavine, who lasted 7.2 innings while allowing 3 earned runs on 6 hits. The crafty left-hander struck out 9 in to gain his 8th win. Wagner nailed down his 11th save. This very well could be the year the Mets triumph in the East. Carlos Beltran (2 hits, 2 RBIs) and David Wright (4-for-4 on Saturday) are swinging hot bats. Jose Reyes leads the team in steals (19) and runs scored (37). The instant offense available can carry this team down the stretch. That's without saying the sterling pitching gems starters Martinez, Glavine, and newly acquired Orlando Hernandez will contribute.

Taking control of the East shouldn't be a problem unless the Braves go on a hot winning streak. The Phillies are an improved team, but they nor the Marlins will pose much of a threat coming down the stretch. The Miracle Mets from the past may be resurfacing though just as another refined ball club in a new decade. Pedro Martinez is considering retirement after the 2 years remaining on his contract are up. Until then the Mets should have few worries if any and put their sole concentration on winning the pennant.

The Tigers continue hot streak at 32-14...what the h---?

It's been smooth sailing for the Detroit Tigers in May, posting victory after victory. Of course this week the competition hasn't overwhelmed them as finished off the Royals last night 6-3 at Kansas City. Jeremy Bonderman (5-3) sealed another win behind sufficient production from the starting lineup. Omar Infante's two homers were all the Tigers needed.

Bonderman went 7 innings and allowed 3 earned runs on 10 hits and a walk while striling out five batters. Closer Todd Jones recorded his 15th save. An impressive statistic considering how no one expected Detroit get off to such a great start in the first half of the season. They're probably predicted to finish 3rd or 4th in the division. If it wasn't for World Champion White Sox they might be able to steal the division title this year.

Leading the team in batting average and RBIs is Maggilo Ordonez (.322 31 RBIs), who's putting together a tremendous season. As for the pitching rotation Kenny Rogers has posted 7 wins already. The team offense has combined for 68 homeruns and 218 RBIs. Chris Shelton is also having a career year, helping fuel the offense. Teams in the East better be aware of the Detroit Tigers this season and not not underestimate them. Otherwise they may get burned.

Pistons vs. Heat: Eastern Conference Finals preview

The Pistons can thanked their lucky stars they triumphed over the Cavs in Game 7 in Detroit. Giving credit where it's do; Lebron James gave the Eastern conference champs a battle. King James stole the spotlight, averaging over 30 points per game in the series. Turning to a new, more straining challenge the Pistons will meet the Miami for another best-of-7 series.

Defense again will be a huge factor in this series. Obviously, Miami has the shooting touch and strength inside. If the Heat can keep composure, not let the partisan Detroit crowd rattle them, and keep their turnovers to a minimum they should be okay. With Ben and Rasheed Wallace dominating the paint on D it still will be tough for the Heat.

Dwayne Wade (averaging 43 ppg in the playoffs) will be the focal point of Miami's offensive attack. Shaq will also get his touches inside, having to deliver some monster performances and play hard-nosed D. The X-factor in the series could be either Antoine Walker or Miami guard Jason Williams. We'll see what happens tonight at the Palace in Detroit.

Interleague baseball weekend

The start of interleague play this weekend has been memorable. Out west, the Giants and the Athletics hooked up in Oakland as Barry Bonds crushed his 714th career homerun, tying the Babe. The record seems to be the only thing Major League Baseball is focused on of late. The Cardinals sweep the Royals, Albert Pujols remains red hot, cranking his 22nd homer of the season. (The folks in K.C. won't have much to cheer about again this year).

In cross-town matchups the Mets got the best of the Yankees winning the subway series 2-to-3. Tom Glavine (7-2) picked up the win on Sunday going six innings while allowing 2 earned runs on 7 hits and 4 walks. Carlos Delgado homered and had 3 RBIs. The club from Shea Stadium looks hungry enough and plenty capable of capturing the East title this season. The Cubs and White Sox hooked up at U.S. Cellular Field. Things boiled over in a heated affair on Saturday as A.J. Pierzenski collided into Michael Barrett at the plate. From there Barrett punched him in the jaw and a short melee ensued. The Cubbies salvaged the series by winning game 3 Sunday 7-4. Zambrano struck out 9 and won his third game. Guess who tied the game for the Cubs? That's right Michael Barrett.

Seattle got their first sweep of the season against the Padres, improving to 20-25. They ignited a 8-run inning behind Raul Ibanez's dinger. The vibe is said to be good in the clubhouse, but it's still a long season yet. The M's will have a lot of catching up to do still in the AL West. The 3-game series in L.A. went the Dodgers way as they sweep the Angels. Besides the aforementioned series nothing extraordinary took place. Interleague Play is always exciting though and gets teams a chance to take on new, evolving talent in baseball.

Mavs' Terry suspended for punch in Game 5

The Spurs and Mavericks series has got fiery. Coming on a monster game from Tim Duncan (36 points on over 50% shooting, 12 rebounds)San Antonio tries to climb back into the series as they face elimination down 3-2. The intensity escalated between the two Western conference contenders Thursday night as Jason Terry and Michael Finley were involved in an altercation.

Going for a loose ball on the floor, Finley reaches down in attempt to gain possession while Terry, sprawled on the court after being knocked down by another player throws a punch to Finley. During the live televised game this footage was not seen. Afterwards through an extended slow replay the NBA saw what actually occurred during the scuffle. The Spurs' Finley was obviously mad about the incident, but officials didn't know about what until later. As a result, Jason Terry got suspended for Game 6 in Dallas.

The two key players for San Antonio in the series are Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili. Without strong performances from them the
Spurs chances of surviving to force a Game 7 are slim. I think the Mavs have a little more firepower from the offensive end, but like most tight playoff series it will all come down to defense.

Cavs making a turnaround against Pistons

There is no doubt that the wonders of Lebron James are extraordinary. He is helping take basketball to new heights and bounds. His Cleveland Cavailers refuse to quit against the Detroit Pistons in the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. Too many critics counted the Cavs out from the start of the series. Now look, they've tied the series 2-2, winning both games at home.

The Cavs have discovered that the key to beating the mighty Pistons is taking them out of their game plan and playing tenacious defense. Rasheed Wallace had to eat his own words after the loss in Game 4, guaranteeing or "Guaran Sheeding" a victory for his team. His boasting and cockiness only motivated Cleveland, lighting a fire under them. The rest of the series isn't going to be as easy as Detroit anticipated. You can damn well guarantee one thing: Lebron James will do everything in his power to help the Cavs prevail. Tonight the two teams lock up for what is expected to be a heated, exciting Game 5 back in Detroit. Go Cavs!

Topps' screwup helps card collectors reap high profits

Another fairly no-name minor leaguer's baseball card was released by the Topps Trading Card Company. They made a big oops by mistakely producing a limited quantity of the rookie card. Supposely only 100 are in circulation. The Royals' prospect, Alex Gordon is stunned that his first year card is selling for over a thousand dollars. Last week it sold for $7,500 on Ebay!

The "goof up" by Topps on this now hard sought after trading card is strange. It's kind of funny too because if the Gordon rookie card was issued at the normal production run it wouldn't be worth squat since he plays for the Royals (The club is improving, but they still have a long ways to go from not sucking). Far being from me to judge Topps on such an extraordinary error, although I have never been impressed with their products. Their sets are too big and overpriced in my view while their so called "best inserts" are normally low valued and too scarce and expensive to obtain (autograph odds 1:590 packs, WARNING: May contain pure, worthless crap).

Card collectors can enjoy the moment with this new hobby rarity while young Alex Gordon relishes the recognition and prestige he's getting from this publicity until he's forgotten and tossed to the side like yesterday's garbage. The minor leaguer claims he wishes to request his card from Topps and put it in a frame. Well, he should since that will be the only pride and honor he'll receive while wearing a Royals' uniform. Sorry, Royals but everyone knows it true. If anything fans and collectors can be happy with this experience after obtaining a piece of history that they normally wouldn't care about.

Nets vs. Heat Playoff Series tied 1-1

Another good playoff series is brewing in the Eastern Conference. Last night the Miami Heat were the victor, winning 111-89 as Dwayne Wade paved the way, scoring 31 points (12-19 FG, 3-3 3PM-A) with 5 rebounds, and 6 assists. When he gets hot no one can stop the superstar guard. Bringing his own flavor to the cause, Shaq clipped in with 21 points and pulled down 6 rebounds. Point guard, Jason Williams added 14 points in the win.

New Jersey faces a challenge against the Heat and vice versa. The Nets' Richard Jefferson wasn't expected to play Wednesday night due to a bone bruise on his right heel and ankle. I think he will be the X-factor in the series for the Nets. His health could be an issue, therefore shifting an advantage for Miami. The instant offense and arsenal of scoring weapons this team has makes them a threat to any competitor.

Vince Carter (finished with 22 points in Game 2) and Jason Kidd are focal points on offense for the Nets, pending Jefferson is unable to play later in the series. Much of the scoring load will be dumped on Carter, who is still a prolific leaper and attacker at the rim. I'm not saying he has to score 40 a game to defeat the Heat, though put enough pressure on the Miami defense late in the game. The more fouls he can draw on the big men inside the better his team's chancing are in the series. This Eastern conference showdown is shaping up to be a awesome series.

Bonds refuses to sign homerun ball for fan

I guess all the pressure is getting to be too much for that 'hot shot' Barry Bonds, who's a homer shy of tying Babe Ruth. You know a player is selfish and doesn't deserve to be honored when he refuses to autograph one freaking baseball for a fan who caught his 713th homerun ball. However, Bonds wanted the fan to sign a release form to use the photo of the two together on his show, "Bonds on Bonds" on ESPN. What a load of bull shit!

If Barry thought fans hate him because of his race he's only partially right. They think he's a jerk, asshole, bigot, selfish turd, and not to mention fat head. That doesn't cover all the names, but it's pretty close. The show on ESPN might as well be called, "Bonds On Crack" for all most fans care. The title would be more befitting to his attitude and demeanor. Lack of class is not a good thing for any Major League player especially big stars and sports icons.

When Bonds does break the historic homerun mark set by the Babe he still won't ever measure up to the Hall of Famer's legendary status. Everyone remembers Ruth as a clossial homerun hitter, one of the best of all-time. Fans and the sports community won't reflect on Bond's achievements the same way. He's turned too many people against him and has shown his true colors. Barring a clean steroids investigation (yeah, right! slim chance of that happening)his records and statistics may actually have merit and be worthy of celebration. I don't see a glorious future for the San Francisco slugger.

Lebron leads Cavs to second round of playoffs

Gilbert Arenas and the Washington Wizards must be devastated after their 114-115 overtime loss Friday night to Cleveland. It was the final crushing blow which ended their postseason. This series was fantastic as I knew it would be from the start. For two near evenly matched teams it was bound to go down to the wire in dramatic fashion. The Cavs' Damon Jones, who played rare minutes in the series, hit the game-winning jumper with just under 5 seconds to go.

Throughout the series Lebron James was sensational, making good for two 40-plus point scoring performances, a triple-double (first playoff game), and shattering a couple franchise records (25 points in a half, 5 threes in a quarter, most points in a playoff series). Most of the attention may have centered around James, but credit shouldn't be taken away from Gilbert Arenas. He shot over 50% in two games while scoring at least 34 or more 4 times, his valiant efforts kept the Wizards alive until the closing seconds of Game 6.

What an exciting, intense series! I thought for sure the Wiz would force a Game 7 back in Cleveland. Lebron and the Cavs have a new challenge in the second round, the Detroit Pistons. Any team in the East dreads facing Detroit now. Their defense is superb, no. 1 in the league behind the physical inside play of Ben and Rasheed Wallace. Point guard, Chauncey Billups is a pivotal all-around player who can hurt a team many ways. The Cavailers and Lebron will have one hell of a test as the series kicks off Sunday in Detroit. This doesn't mean King James won't be ready and willing to bring his A-game.

The historic mark: Ruth's homerun record

715 is only a number for most people. Avid baseball fans know different. Everyone around the game is so anxious for the Babe's record to be broken. This is a elite Hall of Famer who is idiolized and considered one of the best homerun hitters in history. The wave of controversy surrounding the whole Barry Bonds investigation seems to be put on hold while the baseball world marvels at exciting possibilities as well as who will be the next great player etched into the record books.

Despite the issues with steroids or allegations clouded over Bonds the most notable achievements such as the homerun record should be given proper recognition and honor. The problem still is will the record be tarnished if Bonds does indeed surpass Hank Aaron's mark. Of course he will breeze by Ruth, only needing a couple more homeruns to do so. I just want to see Major League Baseball keep or restore a level of intregity that it deserves.

New Detroit Tigers shining in the early going

Usually I wouldn't mention the Tigers when bringing up discussions about baseball, but they're off to a impressive start. At 16-9, closing out April with a sweep of the Twins the future is looking bright for this team. Driven by a good blend of talent, a cast featuring Ivan Rodriguez, Magglio Ordonez, Dimitri Young, Brandon Inge, Chris Shelton, and Jeremy Bonderman. The Tigers outscored the Twins 33-1 this weekend.

Detroit doesn't possess the most potent lineup in the Central division, but know how to execute as a collective group. So far, first basemen Chris Shelton has been on a tear with 10 homeruns (leads American League) and 20 RBIs. He also owns a .326 batting average. The season is only into the second month, although this Tigers team shouldn't be taken for granted. They will burn opponents faster than the Yankees can earn another $1 million in revenue.

Up next on the schedule are the Royals and Angels at home then the Twins again on the road. Today Jeremy Bonderman (2-2 5.04 ERA) takes the start on the mound against Runelvys Hernandez (1-0 1.29 ERA). The Royals are coming off a horrendous season, posting a 56-106 record.

Shaq tired of being "screwed" by the refs

The Miami Heat's first round opponent in the Eastern Conference playoffs has been favorable so far, having the edge with the team's multiple dimensional offense and star power. However, things haven't been going smooth For their star Center. The refs have racked up the fouls on Shaq, which has got him all riled up. After Game 3 in the best of 7 series, Shaq publicly criticized the refs for their poor officiating. The league saw this as a blatant verbal attack, refusing to condone such behavior. As a result Shaq was fined $25,000.

Expecting a big name superstar like Shaq to keep his mouth shut is impossible. He's going to express himself whether people like it or not. While in the heat of battle this man is known to throw his weight around in the low post and send opposing players to the floor by shoving, jabbing, kneeing, and elbowing (when he clobbers players coming to the basket they can only hope he doesn't break their bones or crack a rib cage). This just means he's a physical player. It doesn't qualify him for an automatic foul every time down the court.

At the moment the Heat are up 2-1 in the series against the Bulls. The main concern for Miami is shutting down Ben Gordon (scored 30 points in Game 1) and point guard Kirk Hinrich. In the meantime Shaq will have to keep his emotions in check and co-exist with the referees. He can get offensive support from Dwayne Wade, who will be trying to put together another terrific all-around performance, dare say...a triple-double. I look for Miami to head to the second round with brimming confidence.

Pat Riley will have his squad ready for any late-game surprise design plays if needed. With Antoine Walker and Jason Williams coming off the bench, producing and playing valuable minutes the Heat have nothing to worry about. All Shaq Diesel needs to do is keep his mind on the game, refrain from cursing at the refs to avoid technical fouls, and bring his best game. If one ref in particular though continually makes crappy calls he should be replaced or heckled nonstop by the crowd while they throw trash on the court.

Cavs vs. Wizards series, notched 1-1

After a fantastic performance from Lebron James (triple-double) in Game 1 the Wizards stormed right back in Game 2 to prevail 89-84. Behind shooting guard Gilbert Arena's 30 point explosion the Wiz had their A game clicking on all cylinders. Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison also contribued 21 points a piece. The Eastern conference first round series looks to be tight.

The Cavs still have their work cut out for them against Washington. It will be no short mountain to climb in advancing to the second round. They have to maintain an offensive spark and not rely too heavily on Lebron James. He will probably put together at least a 40-point scoring performance, but Big Z, Flip Murray, and Damon Jones will have to come through some in the clutch. Drew Gooden needs to bring a strong rebounding game while getting his 10-14 points a game. Behind King James anything is possible for Cleveland, who determine their own destiny.

L.A. teams boast presence in playoffs

Both the Lakers and Clippers have emerged in the playoffs at the same time for the first time ever. For one franchise that has a long history of sucking this is quite a turn around. Obviously, the Lakers experienced their fair share of glory in the postseason. Kobe Byrant looks to lead his team to the second round in the Western Conference. Averaging over 30 points a game in the regular season as one of the top scorers in the league, Byrant wants to show that he's a versatile star that will deliver in the clutch. The problem is the rest of his team doesn't contribute enough and may end up watching his magnificent performances on the court.

On the flip side, the Clippers have worked hard to clinch a playoff berth, burning opponents that underestimate them. This is a team that anybody in the league used to be able to slaughter. They got beat so bad that they were accustomed to bending over and taking it straight up the rear end. Now lead by a hit cast which includes former Duke standout Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, Sam Cassell, and ex-Rockets player Cuttino Mobley. This Clippers team have stormed their way through the West to reach the promised land (For the Clips this is as close to a miracle as anything. Forget the NBA Finals, they're just glad not to be known as the team that sucks every year).

The truth is both L.A. teams have earned a spot in the playoffs and deserve it. They have their work cut for them. The Lakers are down 1-0 to the Phoenix Suns. Byrant finished Sunday's game with 22 points. Lamar Odom will need to step it up, relieving some pressure from the superstar on offense. The Clippers battle the Nuggets and won the first game of the series 89-87. This series could go either way. If Carmelo gets hot, going on a scoring tangent the Clips will be in trouble. The action will heat up this month as both L.A. teams will fight and claw to stay alive.

NBA Playoff Preview: Cavs vs. Wizards

In his third season in the pros Lebron James leads the Cleveland Cavailers to the playoffs for the first time since 1997-98. Backed by a now healthy Larry Hughes, the pressure is lightened from James' shoulders. Their opponents in the first round, on the other hand have no intentions of going easy on the Cavs. The triple threat duo of Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison, and Caron Butler will be a force to reckon with. If one player has an off-game expect the other two to deliver big.

As far as experience Washington has the edge since they have more veteran guys who been around the block in the postseason. Cleveland will need a source of instant offense out of big Z. His scoring can be streaky, but when he's hot the Cavs better feed him the ball. I anticipate Lebron completing a few 40-point plus performances in this Eastern Conference Series. Everyone knows the superstar can score, but we'll all see how well he can play defense. It will be put to the test in the opening round.

Cleveland finished the regular season over .600 while positioning themselves in second place in the Central division. The Wizards didn't clinch a playoff spot until last week. Gilbert Arenas will be the guy to guard tight and watch closely for the Cavs. He's the top scorer on the team (27.5 ppg). Both teams seem to be match up well. This will be an exciting series no matter who prevails in the end.

Andruw Jones starting to heat up in April

The Atlanta Braves can credit much of their success in the last 6 seasons to their centerfielder, Andruw Jones. Last night he slugged two homers to help his team clobber the Mets. Not only is Jones batting .322, but he also has 22 RBIs. Making diving and leaping catches is far from common from the versatile superstar. His offensive outbursts fuel the club, being a main reason why the Braves win the division every year.

Having the sensational power hitter in the lineup Andruw compliments other top players like Chipper Jones (when healthy), Adam LaRoche, and Marcus Giles. The last 5 years Jones has hit at least 35 homeruns, some counting huge towards the end of the regular season. This is a guy any team would want to have on their squad especially in the playoffs. I personally, wouldn't mind seeing him in a Cubs uniform. Yeah, like that's ever going to happen. Keeping him those Andruw...just not against the Cubs.

There is no doubt in any baseball fan's mind that Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays left the game with integrity and honor. Their names are etched in the record books as two of the greatest players of all-time. Both Hall of Famers hit over 500 homeruns and batted higher than .300 at least 6 times in their careers. They were the pride of New York and San Francisco in the late 50s to mid 60s during their prime. Legends like Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays left their mark on baseball for eras to come.

Baseball players have changed in their approach to performance on the field. Now stars and lesser known players are trying too hard to boost their level of play and become bask in the glory of super stardom. Unfortunately, players today continue to lie and cheat to make a name for themselves rather than concentrating on making a positive impact to help their team win or improve without using illegal, banned substances. Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays made mistakes. They even got suspended for working for an Atlantic city casino. It wasn't their questionable outside activities which lead to their baseball fame, but their impressive career performances obtained through their natural ability.

Greats don't come along that often anymore. Too many players are tarnishing the game by using steroids, trying this in secrecy while reaping outlandish salaries and bonuses. Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig, Hank Aaron, Jackie Robinson, and Ted Williams never wanted to jeopardize their careers or damage the sport by taking unintelligent risks. They cherished the game too much. That why players like Mantle and Mays will always be remembered as true elite baseball stars as their names are enshrined in Cooperstown. Every fan can feel good knowing that they honestly deserve the honor. Today's stars I'm not so sure about.

Homerun power from a less notable Major Leaguer

Every year players get hit more and more homeruns. Fans come to the ballpark to see the long park, it's no secret. So far in the first two weeks of the season Detroit's Chris Shelton is helping to charge his team's offense. He's already hit 6 homeruns and is not a likely power hitter. No one can predict which players will come out of no where and hit 30 or more homers in a season.

Detroit isn't got an all-star lineup, but they do have a decent mix of players with the likes of Ivan Rodriguez, Dimtri Young, Brandon Inge, and Jeremy Bonderman. They're still growing as a franchise and won't dominate anyone in the American League. Players like Shelton can a sweet catch for a team who has struggled to get to .500 in the last 5 years. This year when guys getting stronger and having better bat speed they could be 3 times as many homeruns hit compared to last season. Who knows what players will turn out to the most pleasant surprise in 2006.

Actor Michael Keaton criticizes Pirates' owners

The home opener could've gone better than expected for the Pittsburgh Pirates' owners. Actor Michael Keaton was invited to throw out the first pitch. That's not all he threw out. He voiced his opinions with constructive criticism. Keaton felt the franchise wasn't making any strides in becoming a contender in the National League because the Pirate owners will not spending enough money to sign the right mix of talent on the team. In his view, the fans who were sick of seeing their team lose weren't being vocal or outspoken enough to let the owners know what a crummy job they were doing.

The Pittsburgh native is a proud Steeler fan who wants to see a turnover with the Pirates, who have suffered a long drought without a championship, much less a playoff birth. The Pirates team payroll is slightly above $43 million. None of top players on the team are receiving high salaries. It's an issue of direction the owners expect the franchise to go in for the next 5 years. They better start working on retrieving high-caliber stars who can make an immediate impact or the Pirates will continue to go no where.

Nats' Guillen still fiery and hot under the collar

Since the recent Mets vs. Nationals game, outfielder Jose Guillen's temper has resurfaced on the field. He didn't like the pitcher's intentions in one at-bat which came close to turning into an ugly scene. Pitching too far inside in recent years had caused Major Leaguers to react defensively and defiantly. Pitching this way is a part of the game. In Guillen's case, he tends to overreact sometimes. In Friday's game in Shea Stadium, Pedro Martinez came high and tight inside on Guillen, who began to shout at him then walked toward the mound with a squeezed bat in hand.

Pedro claimed that he wasn't attempting to him Guillen. Pitchers like to throw inside to brush hitters off the plate. This is normal and should be expected. However, the former Pittsburgh Pirate got hot under the collar and was ready to take a swing at the veteran right-hander. Jose's had issues in the past few years with conduct and attitude. He'd be okay if he channeled his anger and all that aggressive energy into his hitting.

The Nationals will probably have to contest with Guillen's off and on again bad temperament again this season. Advising him to take anger management may help as well as the coaching staff learning how to discipline him as a ball player. Guillen's hit 30 or more homeruns in the past 3 seasons. Beginning his career in Pittsburgh, he was scouted as a promising young prospect while in their farm system playing Single A ball for the Lynchburg Hillcats. From there he was traded to the Angels then to the Oakland A's for a short stay. He's finally found a new home in Washington. Guillen, despite his brooding nature, can provide power for any team and serves as an asset in the clutch.

New Orleans/Oklahoma Hornets making a run for the playoffs

After finishing dead last in the Mid-Western division last year, no one predicted the Hornets to a chance at clinching a playoff spot. Thanks to restructured lineup and rookie sensation, Chris Paul they're very much alive in the hunt for the final seed in the Western conference. Now at 2 games below .500 the Hornets are 36-38, trying to work magic in the final two weeks of regular season play. The main reason the Hornets have a shot is because of one dynamite player.

Chris Paul finished with a triple-double last night as the Hornets beat the Warriors in overtime. Putting on a spectacular show, Paul scored 18 points, dissed out 16 assists, and grabbed 11 rebounds. He's a shoe-in for rookie of the year honors. If the Hornets do make the playoffs he deserves most of the credit, boasting one of the best rookie years of all-time being compared to Tim Duncan, Kobe Bryant, and Michael Jordan. With the hurricane diaster effecting the team's home location and schedule the Hornets have rose to every challenge in their path.

Up next on the schedule is the Raptors, which despite their record shouldn't be taken for granted. It favors the Hornets that Chris Bosh is injured. Winning the next 5 games could very well position this New Orleans/Oklahoma team in front of Sacramento. Key players to watch are David West, Desmond Mason, and Cory Snyder. Their contribution and impact will determine whether or not the Hornets squeak into the postseason. However their outcome unfoils, Chris deserves the recognition of having an incredible rookie year.

Fans openly display their disdain for Bonds

Barry Bonds received an unpleasant greeting for the home opener in San Diego, to say the least. This is just a taste of what the slugger has in store for the season. Fans made their anger known, holding up signs making remarks towards Bond's steroid use and reference to the size to his testicles. The most gruesome part occurred when a fan threw an oversized syringe on the field, trying to hit him while strolling to the plate (Yes, this actually happened). Barry was on the tail end of vicious heckling.

The rest of Giants players had to suffer the most since reporters put them in uncompromising, awkward positions by asking only questions about their controversial, hulked-up teammate. How embarrassing it must've been for these guys, who are trying to make a good first impression on Opening Day (That's before some of them get busted for using illegal banned drugs). Omar Vizquel knew his veteran teammate had a rough day because even the kids in the stands were giving Barry a hard time. I could only imagine the trash talk they dissed out..."Hey, Barry it's no need to wear that cup in your pants anymore since no longer have any BALLS!...BAR-ROID! BAR-ROID! Don't drop your STEROIDS! STEROIDS! STEROIDS! "Where is your drug dealer fat head?"

Kids can be so cruel, but since Bonds has tarnished their favorite pasttime he deserves it. The whole locker room and clubhouse environment must be uncomfortable. None of the players probably want to talk to Barry and try to dodge him after the game. This is only Day 1. Who knows what kind of torment Bonds will go through until the end of the season? That's if he makes it that far.

Phoenix Suns uncertain about postseason minus Stoudamire

The Sun's Steve Nash feels adamant about being unable to propel his team in the playoffs without Amare Stoudamire. Back up and new addition, Boris Diaw and Tim Thomas can't match the superstar's offensive output and intensity on the court. Nash is known to put on some scoring clinics, but will he run out of steam in the postseason? I think so since the reguar season has worn out most players. Having the rest of team healthy is also a concern. Sprained ankles, torn achilles, pulled hamstrings, and ruptured discs can occur out of the blue. It can a devastating blow for teams in serious contention in the playoffs.

I understand Steve Nash's doubts as all the pressure will be riding on him to make the big shots and plays if Stoudamire is indeed restricted not to play. Since the big man's injury, teammate Shawn Marion has put together an extraordinary season, recording highs in rebounds and blocks. He's the only other main scoring option besides Nash for the Suns. I expect if he receives enough touches he will have some big, influential games come playoff time. Marion brings such great energy and emotion, thriving on hot streaks. Phoenix should put their trust in him and rely on the small forward to give them a jolt of adrenaline.

Gearing up for the 2006 baseball season

Well, it's almost time for another baseball season. News and rumors floating around during Spring Training have had their ill-effects on players and teams. Cited as a known steriod user from two books, Barry Bonds is now under investigation by MLB and a shady Bud Selig. The slugger, chasing Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron on the all-time homerun list, is defensive and angry again...big surprise! Randy Johnson has a secret love child and pitcher Kris Benson moves from the Mets to the Orioles regarding allegations that his racy model wife was the reason behind him being traded, which he states is far from the truth.

The Chicago Cubs will start the season off again in depressing fashion without their star hurlers, Prior and Wood. Speaking as a Cubs fan, I see this as another bad omen and like the countless seasons before this sucks big time (Oh shit...here we go again) Also, due to the past years' brawls between rival teams, Boston's Trot Nixon has urged Commissioner Selig and his staff to shorten the number of games between such rivaled, hot-tempered teams. This is mainly to avoid Red Sox fans trying to punch Gary Sheffield while catching a fly ball or hostile Yank-o-holics spewing out obscenities while throwing objects at Red Sox players, provoking them to enter the stands and start a melee.

St. Louis unveils a new stadium since they figured it would raise attendance and help erase the memory of getting swept by the Red Sox in the World Series. Take that division champs. Now lets see how well you guys cope with shame, the Cubs are professionals at it. (I'm not sure whether this can be took as an insult or compliment?) It looks like Roger Clemens is back for one more season. This guy is a true gamer. Well, I guess spending more time with his family isn't that important after all. (I'm kidding...I'm sure he's had plenty of time to neglect them in the off-season). Oh yeah, almost forget, Mike Piazza made a fatal career decision by joining the Padres.

There is plenty in store for the upcoming baseball season. I really hope there will be no corked bat incidents, doctoring of baseballs, shocking locker room footage of players injecting themselves with drugs, suspensions for excessive milk drinking by bat boys, or full-fledged riots with blood and guts spurting out every where. No sir, I don't want to witness or be a part of such travesties. The worst crap could happen in '06, but then again I'm just a fan, what do I know?
