Cavs on their way to the playoffs thanks to Lebron

It's been more than a decade since the Cleveland Cavailers have reached the postseason. The last 2 seasons they've come close (Got edged out by 1 game by New Jersey in 04-05). Losing skids down the stretch plaqued them. Guided by team leader, Lebron James, this year the Cavs have their heart set on playoff success. Larry Hughes will most likely be unable to play in the playoffs, but Flip Murray (13.1 ppg) continues to serve an important role as his replacement. I think he should be a regular starter to back Lebron up on scoring.

Big Z needs to be getting more shot attempts because he's a proven scorer. His presence and activity will be a prime factor in the playoffs. Right now Z only averages 16.2 ppg with 7.8 rpg. Obviously, Lebron is the go-to-guy in the clutch, however Cleveland should utilize their other options. They'll need to get more out of bench players, Donyell Marshal and Damon Jones. At the moment the Cavs are 41-29, sitting in second place behind the Pistons in the Central division. It would be more favorable if they could've clinched one of the final seeds in the East, but there isn't a chance of that happening unless they lose the remainder of their games.

Tonight the Cavs and Lebron James face the Dallas Mavericks. This game will be a test of strength for Cleveland. They better get an idea of how to guard Dirk Nowitzki as well as be leery of Jerry Stackhouse. This could be a preview if the two teams meet in the playoffs. If James can get on a hot streak at home tonight, Dallas will be for a greater challenge than expected. Go Cavs!

Barry Bonds' quest for cheating baseball history

The two recent books out about Barry Bonds using steroids and other illegal performance enhancing drugs have brought on legal charges in the last week. The veteran slugger is trying to sue the writers and publishers, though doesn't have a real case against them. His lawyers are diligently working on a scheme or loop hole to change that. It could be a dreadful final season for Bonds if he continues to evade the truth, lash out at the media, and make more enemies.

Critics are certain the reports in the books are legitimate and research backs up the accounts disclosed. Many fans are now opposed to Bonds because of what they hear while others can look at pictures from the past and present of his career and see the major difference in his physical characteristics. It's hard to favor any player who's not upfront and honest about allegations nor apologizes for his unprofessional attitude. It's understandable that players deal with pressure, being bombarded with questions by reporters, but that doesn't give them the right to act like a pompous jerk. When questions get to be too absurd, if they don't like it they can walk away.

The Game Of Shadows reveals intricate details of past events and how Bonds as well as other players got linked to illegal drugs. I can see where a person would capitalize on a money making opportunity like this before the baseball season and if the facts are all straight, why not? The fans and general public have a right to know the truth. Besides it's not going to be the last time a player is busted for cheating. Assuming Bonds is elected into the Hall of Fame and indeed found guilty by MLB then former stars like Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and Rafael Palmerio might as well be sworn in as well. It would definitely tarnish baseball though and send the wrong message to future baseball stars and kids. Keeping the game clean, void of cheaters will help it to be cherished for ages instead of discarded as a sham.

Entrepreneur 'sticks it' to the Yankees

The most successful team in baseball history has made another enemy. New Jersey native and business professional, Mike Moorly has developed a product line of hats and apparel with the initials YH stitched on it, which stands for Yankee Hater. This in turn has infuriated the Evil Empire as sales for these items have become widespread. Moorly, a Red Sox fan came up with the idea after the Yankees knocked Boston out of the playoffs in the 2003 ALCS. He found an outlet to unleash his fury of hate and personal vendetta against the Yankee into the mainstream public while earning a profit.

Moorly was adamant about spreading his loathing convictions by sending Red Sox players shirts and hats. They too, despised the team from the Bronx and gladly worn the symbolic apparel during interviews and after games. The Yankees are trying to sue the creative entrepreneur for trademark infringement. They claim his use of the 'Y' logo defames their rightful ownership. Well, the Yankees want to cry because a fan is having fun at their expense. He's exercising his right to free speech and expression. That's not illegal. What is George Steinbreiner worried about? He's still the richest owner in baseball. Besides this won't be the last time anyone openly expresses that they think his team sucks. If anything he should be glad enraged fans haven't tried to burn down Yankee Stadium yet.

If I was this guy, who is obviously very passionate about the game, I'd keep fighting the Yankees in court and pound the same message out there to everyone. Trash talking will add fuel to the fire. Showing true team spirit means not backing down so churning out these hats and T-shirts incites emotion. It's good for baseball. It drives the competition and spurs interests from fans. Depending on the success of New York this season, Yankee Haters may join forces to invoke a curse and watch the team go on a embarrassing losing streak (failing to win the World Series) while influentially providing rabid heckling without their shirts on at the ballpark, covered in Red Sox body paint and completely drunk.

Zo has still got the skills

Two years ago Alonzo Mourning wasn't expected to ever play basketball again. He proved the doctors and the skeptics wrong. After a successful kidney transplant Zo returned to his former team, the Miami Heat. This season the backup center, who compliments Shaq, is contributing on a regular basis. With the Heat's push in the playoffs, Mourning will be a valuable asset off the bench. Despite playing 20 minutes a game his defensive presence is feared while crashing the boards hard every chance possible.

Alonzo started in career with the Charlotte Hornets where he lead the franchise to their first playoff birth. Then he was traded for Miami and played there 8 year. After going on the shelf on an extended period of time he was signed by the Nets for 1 year. His service and availability was limited due to the kidney ailment which was life-threatening at the time. Mourning was the survivor though and made it through the strenous hardships. What a long way the former Georgetown Hoya has come since then.

To shoot 59% in the NBA is tough, but for a player who went through the health problems Zo went through then bounce back is inspiring. The 7'0 veteran role player hopes to be an active inspiration to fans with related diseases who just want to quit or give up on their dreams. During crunch time this is a guy that a team likes to have on their side. Still with a little jump left in his step he can come up with big blocks and defensive stops.

With Miami in firm control in the Eastern conference at 45-23, they'll benefit by having Zo's intensity down the stretch. He averages 2.7 blocks per game. With Dwayne Wade and Shaq as the top scorers plus adding Antoine Walker and Zo to the mix makes for a super competitive force in the league. Miami will put to the test with San Antonio and Detroit. I look for Zo to give the Heat a punch of instant adrenaline off the bench.

UNC vs. Murray State

The Tarheels enter the first round of the tournament tonight against a fairly favorable opponent. They still shouldn't take this team too lightly. Murray State is 24-6 overall. None of their starting five seem to be a scoring threat so that's an advantage for UNC. All eyes will be on freshman Tyler Hansbrough, who will expect to get a lot of touches inside and carry most of the scoring load. Carolina's definitely got the outside shooting edge with Reyshaun Terry and Wes Miller.

If the bench can contribute well with Hansbrough, Terry, and David Noel staying out of foul trouble tonight, Carolina should be in good shape. Though, anything can happen in the second half. Underdog teams have been known to catch fire from the field and beyond the arc. The seniors on both squads will give an all-out effort, wanting to continue the tournament and relish the moments of their final year.

The Wizards triple threat: Jamison, Arenas, and Butler

The Wizards are playing inspired basketball as of late. Last night they defeated the Charlotte Bobcats 119-114. Washington's star trio combined for 94 points (Jamison 35, Arenas 34, and Butler 25). Arenas and Jamison are already chosen to play on the USA Olympics team. Washington is pushing for the playoffs again this year in the East. They climb to 32-30 on the season, hoping to stay above .500 and not have to worry about fighting to clinch a final seed in the conference.

Leading the way is Gilbert Arenas, who averages 29.1 ppg on 44% shooting from the field. He's going to be the key component down the stretch. With the offensive firepower of Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler, a sole scoring reliance won't be an issue. Also Antonio Daniels is another asset at the point, coming up with big shots at times and getting other teammates involved. Washington will have to go toe-to-toe with the budding competition of the Cavs, Bulls, 76ers, Heat, and Mavs. We'll see how resilient this team is in the final months of the regular season.

The hustle and bustle of Spring Training

The newcomers who are invited to Spring Training get a opportunity to impress coaches and scouts. For some a life-time dream can be fufilled while others get a fresh start at a new life and career without obtaining a green card (The no. of foreigners in baseball rises each year so there is no need to act like this isn't true). All prospects deserve a chance to shine on the big stage. They encounter the same challenges and tests as veteran ball players. With Spring Training winding down the new blood will see how well they match up against the competition, leaving question as to whether they will be cut, stay active on the roster, or be shipped to the minors.

Playing to the likes of small town fairly unknown teams rooted on by goofy mascots in Class Single A or Double A for years can be depressing. It may not be a glamorous lifestyle, but at least it provides enough time to learn skills and improve overall ability. The next Alex Rodriguez or David Ortiz (any other big name star) may emerge this year in a struggling team's farm system and reach the Majors. Then a franchise can be built around this player and eventually be a winner. Their potential for success is unlimited unless they make one fatal mistake. Of course, that would be using illegal performance enchancing drugs: antemphamines, steroids, human growth hormone, etc.

Avoiding the same bone-head career decisions as other Major League stars will keep these young prospects on the right path. If they truly enjoy playing they'll resist any desire or peer pressure to use drugs or taking a huge risk of committing career suicide. Guys like Daryl Stawberry, Doc Gooden, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmerio, and now most significantly, Barry Bonds have destroyed their reputation and tarnished their accomplishments as athletes. It's a shame to see any young player go down that same road. The up and coming stars in Spring Training should just stick to morals and principles while playing their best baseball. They can at least be respected.

ACC Tournament

The level of play for March Madness has been outstanding. It's fun to watch the ACC tournament every year, but this year it's seems more intense. Teams competitiveness have rose to new highs. Playing host to the tournament, the Greensboro Coliseum in North Carolina has featured the following top ACC players: J.J. Redick, Eric Williams, Justin Gray, Sheldon Williams, Tyler Hansbrough, David Noel, Craig Smith, Sean Singletary, Zabian Dowdell, Robert Hite, Chris McGray, Mario West, and Anthony Morrow. Two teams are left, Duke and Boston College.

Today UNC got knocked off by Boston College, 85-82 while Duke defeated Wake Forest 78-66. Redick, pressured most of the game scored 20 points (6-17 FGM-A) and the Demon Deac's Eric Williams flushed down 23 points with 12 rebounds. Wake just got tired towards the end of the game and were unable to score on late key possessions. In the other semi-finals game Craig Smith lead the way for Boston College, scoring 23 points (9-12 FGM-A) and snagging 15 rebounds. The Eagles capitalized on the Tarheels' missed scoring opportunities and blunders in the closing two minutes of the game. Despite the loss, Tyler Hansbrough(23 points, 11 boards) had another solid game as did senior Reyshaun Terry, who finished with 17 points after fouling out.

I think it's going to be a real scrape fight tommorrow for the finale. Boston College has surprised many people in their first year in the conference. They've won 10 out of their last 11 games. This team shows good composure, doesn't seem intimidated by any opponent, and will be a tough challenge for Duke. They play to their strengths inside and will run off momentum. It will likely be a nail biter for the championship, an interesting contest to say the least.

Wade flourishes in return, sealing a Miami victory

They don't call him, 'Flash' for nothing. Rejoining the Heat after a 2-day absence due to a bruised, sore knee Dwayne Wade exploded for 40 points on 13-for-21 shooting from the field (13-14 FT)with 5 assists and 3 steals in a 118-112 win against the Wizards Wednesday night. Sporting retro uniforms, both teams went old school for a new appeal, but it was Wade who was the feature attraction.

Shaq can thank his lucky stars for having such a dynamic, all-around superstar teammate. This team wouldn't be 40-20 without D-Wade. He's a great contributor, averaging 27.5 ppg and 6.8 apg. Pat Riley has the Heat playing terrific basketball and knows how to utilize his two main stars' talents. Too many critics think Miami can't hang with Detroit and wouldn't survive in a playoff series. I beg to differ.

While Miami isn't the strongest defensive team in the league they are a fierce scoring threat every game with numerous offensive weapons available. Even when Wade has an off-night they've got other players that can beat opponents. They can contend with any team in the East and West. If Wade and Shaq stay healthy for the rest of the season I like Miami's chances in the postseason.

MLB's hypocritical oath: selling legal supplements

When times in baseball aren't controversial enough, team owners and Commissioner Selig resort to low, soulless tactics fueled by greed. MLB now offers players supposedly legal drug supplements which will be available for sell in every clubhouse. What the hell is MLB thinking? This seems like asinine reverse psychology. Those at the top who approved this idea had to either be completely wasted or thinking only about money in their pocket. Yeah, this proposal is a real joke alright. It's not going to work.

First of all, when has any Major Leaguer ever been known to "use" legal drugs to enhance performance? The only exception is Rafael Palmerio, who is the former spokesman for Viagra before he got busted for crack pipe smoking...I mean steroids (What's the difference any more really? If players think they can get away with it they'll try anything). The point is athletes will look for any competitive edge they can get whether ethical or not. Just because a health supplement is legal doesn't mean dumb jocks won't have a trainer or supplier mix illegal substances with it when no one is around. That's the old routine until everyone becomes real suspicious and a player is later found guilty. The situation then plays out like this:

Player: Man, how dare you excuse me. I don't take steroids. I've NEVER taken steriods in my life.

Media: So you don't object to taking a drug test before the season?

Player: Not with a bunch of dudes hovering around while I take a piss. This is disrespectful; damn it I'm a professional baseball player who cherishes the game and have done nothing wrong.

Media: Have you ever used any other illegal substances such as heroine, speed, PCP, or cocaine? Let's just say, hypethically it got you high before a game. What effect did it have on your performance?

Player: I don't believe this sh-t! Of all the freaking...this interview is over. As far as I'm concerned you all can kiss my ass!

A couple weeks later the unfortunate news is released about the player.

MLB: We are ashamed to announce that another player has tested positive for steroids. This is truly a sad day in baseball. Punishment of a suspension and fine have been served. Through our continual efforts we will rid baseball of cheaters. There is no place in the game for steroids.

Cut to 2006

MLB: We need to make more money, but how? I know let's sell legal supplements to the players. By God, we might be on to something here. Wait a minute, what about moral values and making the new steroids policy sound self-defeating...yeah, screw that! Gentlemen, we may have just unveiled the business formula to becoming richer millionaires!

Drug Addicted Player: Did you hear about the great news Juan? The Commissioner has approved the selling of supplements. This is too good to be true. What were those fools thinking? (Whispering) Now I can get out my secret stash 'cruz while everyone is focused on the legal supplements I'll be back here in the clubhouse smoking that chronic and weed!

Okay, that is a extended version of the events that play out in my head. Actually to be fair, a player would also have a teammate inject him in the butt with a syringe. Then the blood would be wiped up unless a player is careless. I don't know why MLB thinks players will stop taking illegal drugs by offering them these supplements. The pills aren't a miracle formula for building muscles and upper body strength. Professional athletes are going to do whatever they want to if they feel desperate enough. It's a shame since their natural ability is usually what got them to the Bigs in the first place.

Bud Selig should feel like an incompetent ass for allowing this open drug distribution to become active. It's not acceptable to the fans nor should it be by the players. They all know good and well what will happen during the course of the season. Dietary supplements are tampered with on purpose, mixed up, steroids are slipped in behind closed doors, and a 180-pound Puerto Rican (or other nationality) transforms into a bulky 245-pounder with a mean streak. It's all because baseball brought further attention on a heated issue, going in the wrong direction by encouraging players to use drugs. Sure, it's suppose to be a healthy, safe alternative, but some players won't treat it that way. The Players Union needs to get involved and straighten this matter out before the season. Otherwise baseball could be in for another season of shame and lack of integrity.

Ear biting in the NBA

Usually a tactic such as ear biting is reserved for boxing or hockey. Not any more since basketball players have got too aggressive in the heat of battle. The incident with the Spurs' Robert Horry and the Mavs' Jerry Stackhouse got me to thinking, what if an NBA player did get a body part bitten off? Maybe an ear, finger, or nose was damaged and it took numerous stitches to put it back together. The blood loss and mangled flesh would be too gruesome for fans and others to see.

It does sound silly to ever imagine this, but it could happen given the right amount of hostility and type of player. If there is a person like Mike Tyson on the court, other players better watch out. No one may be safe, including teammates. What kind of punishment would be dished out by the league after a hideous biting attack? Fining a player(s) wouldn't serve enough purpose nor issuing a short suspension. I think placing pro athletes in a lockdown, forcing them to also take anger management as well is a good alternative.

Too many players today since want to be bullies while the rest just try to defend themselves. You can't blame a guy for throwing a punch or shove to protect himself. Though, when players, especially veterans start trying to take a plug out of someone's skin the matter becomes real serious. NBA players want to be known for being great stars on the court, not the guy who holds the record for ejections by chewing and biting off ears. The players need to be professionals and just enjoy playing the game.

Wednesday's night in Chapel Hill was a memorable game for fans, students, and players. It marked the last home game for seniors. David Noel put on a show for the Carolina faithful and set a career high in scoring with 26 points, including 4 three-pointers. North Carolina was hot from the start. They got out to a big lead in the first half over UVA and cruised to 99-54 victory. Fellow UNC senior, Reyshaun Terry added 17 points.

The crowd was jam packed to witness the final home game of the season. UNC are now 20-6 in the regular season and advance into 2nd place in the ACC. Everyone is awaiting the monumental game against Duke on Saturday. The confidence the Tarheels have gained over the last montn, since being on a roll, they have a good chance of beating the Blue Devils in Camden. It were be a battle and a real challenge, but when hasn't it been playing this team? Coming off an upset yesterday against Florida State, Duke will be hungry for a victory.

The main strategy for the Heels on Saturday will be containing J.J. Redick. Getting in his face and smothering him with pressure, refusing to give him open looks at the basket will force Duke to find other scoring options. It's okay if Shelden Williams gets his ahare of points in the paint. UNC can live with that just so no one else catches fire. Pushing the pall inside as much as possible to Hansbrough, trying to draw quick fouls on Williams may work to their benefit too. Right now North Carolina is rated 13th in the nation. I'd like to see them outplay Duke and show everyone they still can beat the best in the country.

The Cavs drop back-to-back games against Detroit

As of late, the Cleveland Cavailers are slipping back a bit in the Eastern Conference (32-25 season). They lost two games to the Pistons in 2 days. The 84-72 loss on Monday was tough since Lebron had a good game, scoring 26 points while Zydrunas Ilgauskas contributed 18 points and 15 rebounds. Sunday in Cleveland's 90-78 loss at home Ilgauskas got elbowed by Rasheed Wallace for a flagrant foul. This costed Wallace a $5,000 fine handed out by the league.

Since acquiring former Seattle Supersonics' guard, Ronald Murray things haven't faired real well for the Cavs. With offensive output down by Ilgauskas and forward, Drew Gooden no else is helping Lebron. He's leading the way for the team, averaging 30.8 and 6.6 assist a game. With a sidelined Larry Hughes, who's looks to be out for the season, Cleveland still searches for another reliable scoring option. Eric Snow is doing a decent job at the point and 2-guard position, but he's most effective on defense.

Coach Mike Brown needs to experiment more with his bench. G Luke Jackson can fill valuable minutes and provide a boost. He's shown his ability to score and contribute. Also the 7'0 Verajo should be utilized from his strength and weight in the inside. I look for veteran, Donyell Marshall to step up off the bench. If he lowers his three-point attempts and takes more inside shots at the basket the Cavs will be a greater scoring threat. After all, James can't do it all despite his enormous talent, to get this team into the playoffs.

Bobby Knight's hellish tryouts

Recently, the Texas Tech men's basketball team held tryouts to recruit an extra walk-on player to join the team. The tryouts were shown as a segment on ESPN. Coach Bobby Knight didn't go easy on any of the guys who came out. He shouted and exhibited constructive criticism. I'm sure the most graphic material and language was edited from the show. Knight and his coaching staff seemed to disagree on each player's performance and ability. The guys trying to clinch a spot as a walk-in went through some sort of boot camp. They all shared living space, bunking in an campus apartment for the duration of the tryouts.

I thought for sure Bobby Knight would get so mad at a player that he'd toss a chair onto the court or throw a punch. Due to school regulations and policies he though otherwise and refrained from such violent behavior. Coach Knight looks to be a changed man and has control of his team, aiming to create a successful future at Texas Tech. Careful consideration and evaluation was needed in selecting the right walk-in from a group of about ten college kids. There was animosity and tension between them. One skinny guy, who played guard was showing off too much and ran his mouth to the others. He got on everyone's nerves. He was expected to be cut.

Bobby Knight and his coaching staff not only examined the prospects by their scoring ability, but from an all-around standpoint. They looked at endurance, defensive prowess, leadership, passing, hustle, desire to win, willingness to sacrifice points for teammates, and other significant criteria. I don't know who was chosen as the walk-in, but it had to be someone who demonstrated great fundamentals of basketball and would serve as a spark off the bench for Texas Tech.

Desperate Knicks acquire Francis

This season will not be one to cherish for the New York Knicks. They'd rather put it behind them. Being the laughing stock of the Atlantic division in the Eastern conference the organization knew they had to pull some quick strings. Anfernee Hardaway and rookie, Trevor Ariza were traded to the Magic for Steve Francis. The move may give the Knicks a scoring lift, but won't help them escape their 15-38 record. GM Isaiah Thomas made a smart decision in retrieving another top caliber player. At this point in the season there weren't many alternatives available.

A dilemma is posed in playing time and positions for the two stars. How will Marbury and Francis function the best on the court? If they're both in the starting lineup it may cause a clash of egos. One may take a volume of shots compared to the other. Putting Steve Francis at shooting guard would be best since Marbury is a natural play maker and creator for teammates. Larry Brown will have plenty of set plays, utlizing both players' strengths. The question for the Knicks will be defense. They've got the scoring options, over time I believe they can execute well as a team. The young guys like Nate Robinson and Channing Frye need time to grow and develop.

No rewards await the Knicks at the end of the season except for improvement. They should at least be able to slide past the Raptors and finish without their head between their knees. I expect Isaiah Thomas will help turn this team around by recruiting the right mixture of talent and veteran experience. It may be a slow process, though bringing back a tough image since the hay days of Patrick Ewing could have a huge impact. Finding this key ingredient will push them over the hump.

Trading guns for tickets in Philly

You know crime has got out of control when a sports team joins a city in a violence prevention program. The Philadephia 76ers are working with the local police to scrounge up semi-automatic guns, handguns, or other related weapons in exchange for basketball tickets to home games. The controversy here is they're encouraging people to turn in legal and illegal weapons. Why would anyone in possession of an illegal firearm go to the police? Also, why is the Philly police department expecting citizens to do this and not confiscating these guns when first discovered.

It sounds like the Philly police are just plain lazy. Do they actually believe this will stop murders, homicides, and robberies? Criminals and gangsters from the inner-city won't be giving up their supplies or ammunition. Since January 1st, 44 homicides have been reported in the city. That's close to an average of 1 person a day. Philly's motto never has seemed befitting. The city should change it's motto from, "The city of brotherly love", to "Staying alive by dodging bullets."

The Violence Prevention Program is a good community effort, but won't have much effect on the crime rate in Philadephia. Encouraging thugs and youngsters to get off the streets and turn their life around is commendable, it's shows others care; consequently those who kill and physically harm victims don't as they continue to roam the streets with vengenance and malice in their heart. To help this crime program 76ers players could speak out against violence by signing a petition or doing public service announcements. These efforts may have a stronger impact.

NBA dunk classic in Houston

The festivals for All-Star weekend were crammed packed with fun and excitement. Featuring stars, Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, Ray Allen, Chauncey Billups, and Dirk Nowitzki among others would've been enough to put on a show, but the Houston crowd really came to watch the Slam Dunk contest. It came down to the wire too, going into an overtime period (the first ever) between the 76er's Andre Iguodala and the Knick's Nate Robinson.

To everyone's surprise, the 5'9 Robinson had a wildcard up his sleeve. He brought out former 1986 Slam Dunk Champion, Spud Webb. With anyone rooting on, Nate jumped over Spud for a thunderous one-handed jam. This ignited the crowd and everyone stood on their feet. A controversial scoring was made by one of the judges after Iguodala's final dunk of the night, thus allowing Robinson to win by a one point edge. Many people felt Iguodala should have been crowned champion since he executed a behind-the-back and behind-the-basket dunk, which were both incredible and created a high degree of difficulty.

The night, though, belonged to little Nate, who basked in the glory of victory and soaked up all the attention (Probably that's all he will get since the Knicks are playing so poorly this year, but that's not his fault). Adding a old school element to the equation, Robinson became the first player under 6-foot in 20 years to win the Slam Dunk competition. This guy has got a serious vertical leap and will be an asset to any team.

The Sosa Chronicle: Ending a career on a sour note

Since his days as a once beloved Chicago Cub, sprinting into the field with glee and blasting homeruns in Wrigleyville; Sammy Sosa now wants to calls it quits. After playing one season with the Baltimore Orioles, Sosa hasn't be able to reach an agreement the Washington Nationals for the 2006 season. Apparently they feel his performance has been sub-par in the last 2 or 3 years and wanted to sign him to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. He'd have to work for a starting position which probably made him mad. The proposal for the Major League deal by Washington didn't suit Sosa either, he wanted more money.

The real issue behind this poor decision is obviously steroids. After the congressional hearings last year Sosa hurt his reputation and career. Suspicions grew, therefore effecting Sammy's performance in games and appeal as a prominent baseball figure. Seeing this ugly chain of events unravel with this conclusive nail in the coffin is disheartening for Sosa fans. I've been a long-time, devout Cubs fan and hate to see such a pitiful outcome. This is not to say I feel sympathetic towards Sammy, but to signify what a real lousy way to end a career. He owes a debt of gratitude to fans who've supported him for years and should care less about money at this point in his life. Such selfishness and lack of consideration reflects a negative image on his character while further damaging his baseball status.

The old Sammy Sosa appears to be long gone, refusing to be open about his history with performance-enhancing drugs, thus tarnishing all creditable records held. Everyone is concerned about him destroying his chances of advancing up the ladder on the all-time homerun list by hitting at least 12 more to reach 600. Well, personally I don't think that matters if he cheated to reach this feat. The same goes for any other player. Mark McGwire alienated himself for refusing to comment on steroids or tell his story. The only way Sosa could finish his career with dignity is continuing to play the game (a few more years or longer) clean and performed to his best ability. That's all fans want and expect. They'll at least respect him and still show support.

Any player in the Major Leagues knows better than to cheat the system. Few can get away it. Sooner or later lying and gambling with careers catches up to people. Superstars become too big for their own good sometimes and let the paychecks go to their head. Playing baseball should never be about money, though it will never change because of closed-minded individuals. Players today are more concerned about salary rather than their team sucking or ever making a run as a serious contender. What a great shame!

If a new rule was appointed by MLB with a favored vote by owners requiring that no longer active player can make more than $4 million per year. Also, to prevent arbitration and strike-outs a clause stating that any player who refuses to adhere to these legal conditions will have placed on waivers, deemed a free agent until September while being docked 50% of their annual pay and losing incentives (bonus, paid car rental, hotel, etc.) A policy like this of course will cause quarreling, but leave no room for negotiating, being a small sacrifice to play baseball. Then money won't be so much of an obstacle for teams to work around. It will be good for the game.

Again, it's depressing to hear the foreboding announcement about Sammy Sosa's retirement. If anything good comes out of this, maybe it will teach younger players to make smart decisions. If they want to hang around in the majors to serve a honorable career they'll learn from Sosa's mistakes. Shame and abandonment lead down lonely roads. Every player wishes to be well-liked and valued by a team and fans. In order for this to happen players must stick to morally sound principles and follow the rules no matter what. Sammy let other things cloud his judgment, maybe costing him the ultimate price. I wish it weren't so...

The sorrows of an injured athlete

When one thinks about how injuries reoccur, leading to a pummet in an athlete's career the name Grant Hill comes to mind. Since starting out in the NBA as a member of the Detroit Pistons he's been plaqued with injuries. This must be one of the most depressing aspects in any pro athlete's life. Why can't they stay healthy? Being a player who receives hard contact all the time during games effects their bone structure depending on it's strength.

Being sidelined and not participating in the sport you love has to eat at guys. Since dealing with frequent injuries throughout his career, Hill is considering retiring from basketball. It would be a shame to see him go because he's never be able to reach near his full potential and be the player everyone knew he could be after college (Duke). Athletes today rely too much on their talent and fail to drawbacks or freak accidents which could occur later. Instead of having issues with injuries damaging careers, young guys in the game now destroy their future by breaking the rules (comitting assault/battery, murder, smoking weed/drug possession, kidnapping, arena brawling, illegal possession of firearm, and make verbal threats to fans, coaches, etc.)

The misfortunes of athletes from a uncontrollable element are different. This why young athletes should stride to be the best they can, avoiding unintelligent misconduct and repeat offenses. Causing your career to take a sharp downfall means you take your privilege to play sports for granted; therefore it doesn't seem important anymore. Injuries can be tragic, especially for good-hearted, nice, extremely talented guys everyone likes. That's why as a basketball fan you hate to see the struggle of a player like Grant Hill. He worked hard to make it to the pro level, to accomplish his dream then have it cut short in an instant.

I think in the modern era athletes should have long careers since they're knowledgable about proper exercising and dieting and have various equipment to use whenever needed. Other than factors out of their control (heredity orfreak accidents) they can stay healthy. It will also depend on their lifestyle, whether they inject needles in their body or stay fit, both during the season and off-season. The NBA will be a sad place if players started retiring at the age of 30 because they have a ruptured disc in the back, broken spleen, or ruptured pelvis. No one would then care much about the sport.

Duke still undefeated in the ACC

Today was a test for the Maryland Terrapins who fought hard against a rival conference opponent, though fell short against the elite Duke Blue Devils. Several teams have come extra close to knocking off Duke (besides Georgetown). Shelden Williams and J.J. Redick continue impress and expand their game. They're the heart and soul of the team. Without them Duke wouldn't be ranked at the top in the country.

Duke hands Maryland their 8th loss of the season while improving to 23-1. Duke is 18-0 in conference play. The positive highlight for Maryland was Nick Caner-Medley, who scored 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting and grabbed 8 boards. On the flip side, Williams contributed 25 points, 13 rebounds, and 7 blocks and Redick added 35 points (4-10 3P-A). Maryland's top performers had an off-game. That happens sometimes when least expected. However, when you're facing Duke it really hurts a team, even at home.

Moving closer to March there has got to be an ACC team that can beat Duke. If teams can penetrate a weakness: foul trouble on Williams, inconsistent free-throw shooting from bench players, put tremendous pressure on the ball in the front court and force turnovers they stand a good chance. Otherwise, if they fail to stay in Redick's face, smothering him on defense or allow him too many picks for open threes they're doomed. I'd like to see either Georgia Tech, Boston College, or UNC pull of a victory against the Blue Devils. It's only a matter of time before a determined group does.

Dwayne Wade carries the load for Miami

With a prolific star like Shaq not fully healthy for the year and his declining scoring output, the Miami Heat turn to Dwayne Wade to be the leader. After the All-Star break teams start to get serious about making a push for the postseason. The Pistons, Spurs, Cavailers, and Mavericks will give the rest of the competition a run for their money. They're all able to contend against Miami too.

Coach Pat Riley may know the team superstar who gets paid the most, but also who is the central point of the Heat's overall success. The Heat are loaded with talent, but without Wade in the lineup they're losing an extra 27 ppg. Besides a great scoring option, D-Wade is becoming a good assist man, averaging 6.9 a game. He's capable even of recording a triple-double on any given night. Other players such as Antoine Walker, Gary Payton, and Adonis Haslem perform better as a unit, feeding off Wayne's energy and intensity.

At 30-19, Miami goes toe-to-toe with Dallas tonight, a team that could be a thorn in their side later come playoff time. They'll contend with Dirk, Stack, Howard, and the rest of the gang in this regular season matchup. I look for Dwayne Wade to have another big game...maybe obtaining a quadruple-double, who knows? Take 'em to the rack D-Wade and teach big 'ole Shaq.

J.J. Redick with a rare off-game performance

Being one of the top college basketball teams in the country allows star players to contribute in other areas besides scoring. Though, if you play for the Duke Blue Devils and your name is J.J. Redick having an off-game is not acceptable. That's what happened according to sports gurus Saturday against Florida State. Redick prides himself on exceptional sharp-shooting. That's the main weapon in his game. What I don't understand is why people think he should score 40 points a game. Averaging between 25.0 and 28.5 ppg, I say that's pretty damn productive.

When did scoring 30 or more points become mediocre? For these sports announcers, anaylsts, and wacky sports nuts this isn't good enough anymore. Well, sorry fellas players today can't match the output of legends like Wilt Chamberlain. Hell, even Michael Jordan wasn't a major offensive threat at UNC. Theres way too much focus on records and numbers now. Then there are people like Dick Vitale who go crazy during games and start calling everybody that's anybody a P-T-Per (Prime Time Player). Redick is a great player and will be even better at the next level, but no one can live up to the outlandish expectations people have for him. (Start taking that medication Dicky V. and stop with the crazy antics and ranting)

If Redick won't be pressured and badgered to death about breaking scoring records and asked whether he thinks his team will go undefeated in the ACC then maybe he can put on a real show for the rest of the season. Actually whether he's dropping 30-40 a game hasn't effected his team from winning. As a senior, he's become a better passer and improved defensive player. Those factors may have the strongest impact against the competition. Will Redick go on a scoring tangent against North Carolina on Tuesday or will he get his teammates more involved?

Another ACC matchup: UNC vs. Maryland

The Tarheels can credit much of their first-half good fortune to freshman, Tyler Hansbrough. He's leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 18.2 points and 7.6 rpg. He's become the central focal point on offense. His inside presence and high field goal percentage(.612) make him a threat to teams. North Carolina though shouldn't rely on the freshman so much. More production needs to come from seniors, David Noel and Reyshaun Terry. They can pick up most of the slack on scoring. Also, Junior guard, Wes Miller has been a good addition off the bench while providing consistent shooting from beyound the arc.

Tonight it's going to be a test for Carolina as they take on a talented Maryland team. The Terrapins are 14-5 on the season and 4-2 in the ACC. Their top players, McGray and Strawberry must be kept in check for UNC to gain another win in the ACC. So far North Carolina is 12-5 on the season while 3-3 in conference play. I look for Bryon Sanders to fill in some quality minutes as well as freshman point guard, Bobby Frasor for the Heels. Since the game is being played at the Comcast Center in Maryland, I'm sure UNC will have their hands full especially dealing with the raucous home crowd. Tonight's matchup is going to be entertaining, no doubt about it.

King James, a shoe-in for the All-Star game

With each passing day, the 21-year-old from Akron, Ohio, Lebron James continues get thrive against some of the best competition in the NBA. He displayed an impressive performance last night against the Bobcats, scoring 30 points while adding 6 assists, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals. Coming off a 44-point outburst against Phoenix on Sunday Lebron is red hot now. He looks to make his second apperance in the upcoming All-Star game. Already he's declined to participate in the Slam Dunk contest in February.

Everyone may be thinking about Kobe, Shaq, Duncan, and Steve Nash as true candidates for MVP, but when at the end of the season Lebron James will shine as the brightest star in the league, proving his significant value to the Cavailers. Without him Cleveland doesn't stand a chance of entering the playoffs. Lebron averages 31.2 ppg while working toward obtaining triple-doubles. The great thing about this superstar is he's not selfish. He likes to get his teammates involved and feed off their strengths. I said it from the start, Lebron James is the real deal.

The Cavailers are second (26-17) in the Central division, trailing the Pistons by 12 games. They can credit their first half success to Lebron. With him and Big Z leading the way the Cavs will be a force to compete with in the Eastern Conference coming down the stretch. If a healthy Larry Hughes returns from injury it could give the team an extra edge. Keep up the sterling performances King James. Go Cavs!

Virginia Tech challenges Duke for 1st ACC win

The Hokies men's basketball team is on the rise. They've, however seen their share of missed opportunities so far this season. 0-5 in the ACC, they battle for their first conference win against Duke tonight at home. Lead by SG Zabian Dowdell (15.2 ppg) and G Jamon Gordon VT hopes to make it 2 straight losses for the Blue Devils who are coming off a upset from Georgetown. They will have to hold off the sweet-shooting of J.J Redick (scored 41 points at Georgetown on Saturday) and contain the physical offense and defensive prowess of F/C Shelden Williams.

Duke will look to push over a big lead early and rely on their strengths in the backcourt. With this standing they'll run the clock down and make the most of their key possessions by taking smart shots. If Redick gets left open, VT is going to get burned. They better stick the senior with pressure every chance they get unless he has an off night, which I doubt will happen. On the flip side, Duke better pay attention to F Coleman Collins (17.1 ppg) in the paint as well as Deron Washington. These two play with a lot of energy and can ignite a rally and cause a crowd eruption.

Anything is possible this year in the ACC. No team is unbeatable. The Hokies came so close back in December to beating Duke. If it wasn't for senior Sean Dockery's three-pointer with less than two seconds left they would have. VT wants redemption tonight, using whatever measures necessary to pull off a victory. Coach Seth Greenberg will for sure be on the sidelines ranting and raving, finding a way to motivate his team.

College Players' Ineligibility

What should the age limit be for a student-athlete be to play for a college or university team? This is a long debated issue that still may fairness to the majority, but perhaps not for the minority. Those who transfer to 4-year colleges after completing 2 years or more of education at another institution are usually not effected by the rule for college sports. The problem, however for older candidates who have pursued to further their education a few years later after graduating high school or receiving an associates degree at a community college is they don't meet the guidelines of eligibility.

A student's academics conflict with their right to be considered active as a player. I think it's kind of pointless for suspended or ineligible college players to participate in team practices, but not in games. This isn't fun for them. They have to look on from the sidelines later and wish they could be joining their teammates in games. The NCAA seems clearly set on their limitations for student-athletes. I'd actually like to guys 24-26 be able to play on teams. Sure it sounds like a competitive advantage for certain teams, but this would also widen the scope of college basketball. By having older players there'd be a sense of diversity and added bonus for teams. Another talented player would be available to come off the bench and fill quality minutes.

When a player breaks the law, violates school code, gets arrested, or does something stupid, no doubt they should be put on probation or even banned depending how severe their actions are. On the other side of the coin, refusing to allow walk-ons or transfer students considered to be juniors and seniors to participate in regular sports functions is unjustified and overlooks contributing qualities to a sports program. The rules over time, given such considerations should be changed.

"Glory Road"

The new movie out, "Glory Road, about an southern basketball team in the 1960's with the first all-black starting lineup really brings things into perspective in modern times. Today, student-athletes have too many luxuries like wearing expensive tennis shoes rather than worn-out second hand sneakers that always smell of another person's feet. They also receive extra incentives such as stipends for signing on to play basketball for a university (Yeah, like $500 "walking around" money for the week and other secret gifts). The movie goes to show just how much times have changed.

It used to be if college athletes cursed out an authority figure or caused disruption on campus (protest or assembly) they'd get in big trouble, now players are found guilty of sexual abuse, drug use, illegal possession of firearms, and murder. Quite a stretch from the 60's, huh? I have yet to see "Glory Road", but I know it focuses on a team breaking the color barrier and starting a trend in college sports, to pave the way for all black athletes to play organized ball. The story relives an event that touches close to home with many people who lived in that era.

A tradition of white supremacy was broken in a time period where schools remained segregated. The competition of not only basketball, but all sports expanded shortly later. "Glory Road" reflects on how having talent and desire can overcome the rules of a society. No can stand in a person's way if they believe in themselves and pursue their dreams. I can't wait to see this movie, it's sure to be a real classic.

Can't we all just get along?

Right when you think all is well in the NBA another ugly incident breaks out. It's safe to say this one was minor compared to those in past year. During the Bulls, Knicks game Thursday in Chicago the Knicks' Antonio Davis went into the stands to check on his wife. He claims that he saw her near a fan, "falling back." He thought this fan was harrassing her. His actions were reasoned that he was trying to protect her. That was true, but the NBA didn't agree with the decision, slapping Davis with a 5 game suspension.

Witnesses at the game claim that Kendra Davis, Antonio's wife was seen hitting a male fan for protesting a call and booing the Knicks. No defense or retailation ensued from the fan. There was no altercation between Davis and the man who was struck. Security guards escorted the parties involved out of the building. Davis was of course ejected. The fan, however was later released and allowed to return to the game in the United Center in time to see the end of the game. The Bulls' Ben Gordon sunk the game-winning shot.

The league understood the situation involved with Davis and therefore softened the penalty for player misconduct. The Vice President and Commissioner still felt it's absolutely unnecessary for players to charge into the stands and interfere with any fans for whatever reason. Such actions won't be tolerated and adequate punishment is in order. As a decent human being and fan though you can't blame Antonio Davis for his decision. Anybody who cares about a family member would have done the same thing. Players, players' wives, and fans need to co-exist in a fun, lively environment without taking gestures or comments too personal. Doing so would make the pro basketball experience much more enjoyable for everyone.

The evolution of skinny, extra tall centers in basketball

Before there was Yao Ming and Shawn Bradley other big men roamed the court in the NBA with a notable sense of overwhelming nature. Their height was too much for others to handle at first. These players weren't accustomed to being presented with fat checks or finding the right sizes for clothes. All they wanted was to be part of the game and win. I'm talking about the giants of yesterday like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Manute Bol, George Murasean,and some Russian dude.

The aforementioned players were known for being larger than the game itself and having a difficult time finding a comfortable seat anywhere. They graced the game with a jolliness only the Green Giant displayed. Their active participation resolutinized basketball. Because of their presence the goals had to raised 2 feet and prevented many teams from executing low-post offensive attacks. Their heads just got in the way too much. Alright...the baskets were probably raised for another reason, but the 7 plus footers blocked the view of the rim and succeeded in shutting down inside scoring opportunities.

One thing can be said about all these extra tall centers, they didn't even need to jump to dunk a basketball. Besides that when these athletes played defense it's as if they resembled Godzilla by always swatting at the ball with their long arms. Players like Yao Ming better enjoy their career in the pros and relish the greatest moments because let's face it they're not cut out to do much else. A glass window cleaner maybe, but a FBI Agent or Air Pilot is out of the question. The extra tall big men of today maybe can start a new legacy or era that will be talked about for generations.

UVA outduels VT in ACC play

Sunday afternoon it was a cold, breezy day outside the confines of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. Inside the gym the temperature got scorching hot in a hurry. It was a battle of two state rival teams that wanted to knock off each other by any means necessary. A few technical fouls came into play during the course of the action. Despite a low scoring affair from both sides the tension and hungry for victory was relentless.

The Cavs took to their style of play, shooting from the perimeter and the outside. Guards Sean Singletary (16 points, 6 assists) and J.R. Reynolds (16 points) finished with a good performance. They lead UVA to 54-49 win and help UVA improve to 8-6 overall. Virginia Tech dropped to 10-7. The fans really got into this game, yelling and screaming at the refs for making a slew of bad calls, in their view. The moment of intensity came when VT's Coleman Collins went up for a dunk, hung on the rim, and popped the ball up and out of the net. The officials reversed the call, waving off the basket. This didn't go over well with the Hokie crowd at all. They began throwing trash on the court and booing.

VT's Coach, Seth Greenberg was running wild with emotions all day: he was frustrated, excited, content, incensed, and apalled. Then his moment came like a fury of heat after the PA announcer warned the fans not to throw any more trash on the court. Greenberg then hastily grabbed the microphone and yelled throughout the packed auditorium,"I'm sick of this f--king non-officating crap. Damn it! We're here to win a basketball game. Who's ass do I have to kick around here to get some fair calls our way for God sakes?!!"

Okay, he really didn't say those words, but what a way to have ended a college basketball game. If that did happen he would have been ejected and probably arrested. What he did shout was that his team was going to play as hard as they could to win. Less dramatic yes, but still effective as a motivator. This was the first time I've ever known a Coach to get on a live microphone during a game. So kudos to Seth Greenberg. He's got more than just heart. Tough loss for the resurgent Hokies, but they'll rebound. The two Virginia teams will meet again later in the season at University Hall in Charlottesville.

Ray Allen and Kenyon Dooling get too physical. 

Rough housing on the court

Ray Allen and Kenyon Dooling had several heated physical exchanges on the court Wednesday night. The two players were ejected from the game in the first quarter for fighting. After a cheat shot from the Orlando Magic's Dooling there was swift retaliation from Allen. The combatants pushed and struck one another while running down the court. Eventually they both hit the deck after Dooling shoved down Allen. Then in an outburst of self-defense and anger the Seattle shooting guard tackled his counterpart, both landing into the first row of seats.

It was quite an ugly scene, but what happened could have been so much worse. It wasn't close to a replay of the Pacers-Pistons brawl last year which was a positive. The players will serve suspensions to be determined later. Supersonics Coach Bob Hill stated his case to the refs after Allen's ejection, claiming he was just defending himself and was provoked. Fighting will always result in more than 1 person being penalized, no matter who started it. Afterwards both players regreted their actions that lead to the incident.

Why can't professional athletes get along anymore? There is always an argument or descrepancy over minor things. There are big egos that get in the way and pride that is one line. The scuffles can be avoided if players were level-headed and respect one another. Letting their emotions get the best of them leads to defeat and embarrassment. Keyon Dooling and Ray Allen are usually good-natured players who are solid contributors to their teams. One or the another may of just been having a bad night to start with. If there are no other major altercations in the NBA this year it will be a good sign. However, don't hold your breath!

Lebron James, the future of the NBA

The years of Bird, Magic, and Jordan are distant memories, though cherished ones. Taking flight into a new generation of basketball is Cleveland Cavailers superstar Lebron James. He's the hottest player in the league, positioning his team in second place in the Central division of the Eastern conference. With a backup of swing-shooting guards like Larry Huges and Damon Jones plus a reliable scoring big man in Zydrunas Ilgauskas, James has enough help to do more than keep the Cavs afloat.

His numbers are impressive, 30.6 ppg, 5.8 apg, and 1.8 spg. With a 20-11 record King James will continue pursuit for the Cavs to rise from their miniscule previous seasons and lackluster performances. It's a sure bet he will insure a playoff spot for his team. The caliber of players he collaborates efforts with seems to make things click. This means Lebron doesn't have to score 30 points or more every night for his team to win. If anything he has ample opportunities to set up his teammates and collect more assists per game.

As one of the most popular and best all-around players today, James has become the poster child for the NBA. His world-wide appeal, performance and demeanor on the court also make him a good role model. Kids are in awe of his talents. They want to be like him. Oh my, could he be better than guess who...Jordan? That will be discovered later on down the road. What's important now for Lebron is to caltpult Cleveland to the top. Give him time, he's working on it. King James will rule in 2006.

Tarheels sparkle in first ACC conference game

Saturday afternoon the confines of Chapel Hill were ripping and roaring as usual. Fans had an extra incentive to cheer for the home team. With their opening ACC matchup against rivals NC state the Heels were ready for action. As a underrated team, ranked 25th in the country they proved to be potent and hang with the Wolfpack (#13th), winning 82-69. This should give UNC a head of steam moving into conference play.

The freshmen had a big day. F Tyler Hansborough scored 20 points (14-14 FT) while G Bobby Frasor chipped in with 17 points. On a 13-0 run within the final 2:30 to go the Tarheels seized command from NC State's missed scoring opportunities. Senior David Noel looks to be stepping up as a team leader. His influence will be a great motivator for the rest of the team this season. He's got great athletic ability, a good all-around player and knows how to get others involved.

UNC improves to 9-2 overall and 1-0 in the ACC. They have started off well, but they've got their battles ahead as they face Boston College, Virginia, and Duke. On Tuesday they'll meet Virginia Tech on the road. Coach Roy Williams will try to continue his instrumental role of motivation and discipline. His active participation in games is essential for UNC's future success. Go Heels!

A look back at 2005

2005 had it's moments from start to finish. Controversy and surprise swept the sports world. The following events were more than enough to digest: the U.S. Senate steriods debate, the Rafael Palmerio steriods scandal, the infamous Pacers-Pistons brawl, Ryno-Boggs Hall of Fame induction, UNC winning the NCAA championship, the collaspe of the Evil Empire(George Steinbreiner was on the verge of shitting himself due to his Yankees mediocre performance early in the season), a fan leaping from the upper deck at Yankee Stadium to grab a foul ball, and the whole Barry Bonds w/injury excuse lashing out at the media(More like whining and worrying about the public finding out he's used steroids).

What a year it was throughout the low and high points. The best highlight for Chicago fans was the WhiteSox winning the World Series. The franchise ended over a 70 year drought, many witnessing a miracle season and a day they thought they'd never live to see. (Not for this Chicago fan...that's right another miserable season for the Cubs. What does this prolonged losing spell make 90 YEARS IN A ROW?!! Got to think positive though, if I live to be 95-100 I might get to witness a historical gem of a World Series OR the Cubs losing again).

The worst part of '05 for baseball was Rafael Palmerio lying to a grand jury and shaming himself. This was once a well respected top notch 3,000 hit member who claimed not to have known he digested illegal substances (I guess the same goes for him not remembering being stuck in the butt with a syringe. Come on Palmerio, how dumb do you think the public is?). Also to hurt the sport of baseball other idiots joined in the steroids parade such less popular players like Alex Cora and Ryan Anderson. I think Dodger and Royals fans, however were kinda wishing that guys on their teams would take steroids so they'd have a chance in hell of winning.

There were many memorable moments. Whether your favorite team failed or succeeded whenever feeling down in the dumps you could always find a misfit jock to poke fun of with everyone else. People can rest assure now that 2005 is over that Shaq still hates Kobe, player salaries will continue to rise, and that the bird flu didn't kill off the best sports stars. Bidding farewell to 2005 and crossing my fingers that 2006 won't be a total disaster.

Are young pro athletes overpaid?

The question tends to linger in sports and is overlooked. Young sports stars typically in their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd years are earning way over the average compared to athletes within the last decade. I think no one is worth $5-10 million a year to play basketball, baseball, or football. The biggest increase in player salaries are in the NBA. Rookies and other young players expect high salaries when they enter the league or after playing a few seasons. They've been spoiled by team owners, who have given them whatever demanded or declared by an agent.

Recently Michael Jordan made a statement on television about young players in the NBA being overcompensated early in their career and not earning their salaries. He believes it takes years to garner the accomplishments and privilege to be rewarded with higher salaries. He feels that players today haven't proven themselves and some lack work ethic. Over time they can obtain big goals and meet the criteria as a veteran of the game. That's easy for Jordan to say still being filthy rich, but he makes a valid point. Seeing as more and more high school athletes are entering the pros today they seem to be less motivated to excel or truly prove themselves.

One factor that will change everything to do with salaries are the fans. If they stop paying for overpriced tickets to games revenue is lost and players will be forced to quit or accept lower salaries. The stipulations in contracts are aiding players too. Those may need to be reversed or not listed anymore. Playing sports should be an honor. Sports athletes get paid to have fun. Trying to be a winner is serious business, but insisting more money because previous offers are unsuitable takes away from the purpose of the game. Believing that if certain players are paid what they want then a team can finally succeed in winning a championship is dumb logic. That's not how it works. Players have to be committed, focused, and thrive as a unit to reach full potential. Obssessing over money will never be the answer.

UNC basketball

The North Carolina Tarheels may have a completely different look, depleted of their all-star unit last year, but they are confident in finishing strong in the ACC. This young team has plenty of talent left. The two main seniors, David Noel and Reyshawn Terry are developing into breakthrough prime players while serving as leaders and motivators. UNC is ranked 23rd in the country. With the recent loss to USC they're 6-2 overall. Coach Roy Williams will be a great influence the whole year. He knows how to still make his team winners.

With a fresh cast of players UNC will have a greater chance against opponents than the last couple years. Freshman, Tyler Hansbrough is putting up impressive numbers so far with 17.1 ppg and 7.8 rpg. He's a natural low post player with strong arms and quick moves close to the basket. This kid may be the most pleasant surprise and best assest for the Tarheels this year. With new additions to the ACC like Miami and Boston College the competition will be tough for the Heels. Even without dominant players from previous year they'll still be up any challenge.

Duke may be picked to finish at the top, however if a team like Virginia Tech can give them a run for their money they're not as good as the hype. UNC on the right night can beat the Blue Devils. Duke's potency on offense and defense is overwhelming at times, but they can be stopped. Up next on the schedule for North Carolina is UNC-Asheville. This should be a good warmup game and test of competency until they face Clemson, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and Duke.

Orignial rules of basketball on sale for the holidays

Wouldn't you know it, a family is trying to take advantage of a sports icon's legacy at a perfect time. In this case it happens to revolve around the orginator of basketball, James Naismith. The Naismith family has decided to sell the orginial written rules of basketball for $1 million! First of all I think they're planning a big Christmas this year. That or they have become greedy all of a sudden and don't care about keeping the monumental piece of history in the family.

Now since the Naismiths have made it public that they've got hot property up for sale on the market who is going to pay a $1 million for it? I thought Ted Williams had it rough being frozen after his death (especially icy this time of year...one of the greatest hitters of all-time remains a frozen statue. How inconsiderate and dishearting). James Naismith must be furious and disappointed and probably rolling over in his grave. As the inventer of the game he couldn't have wanted this to happen. Besides, did Naismith ever make a million dollars? That will be one for the all the fact checkers out there. He deserves better treatment than this.

Even with the Naismith's family sudden obsession for cold-hard cash the very creator's name will live on in the memories offans and supporters of basketball. Without him basketball wouldn't of been discovered until later in mid- 1900's and probably not at a YMCA either, thus without making it the recreation facility it is today. So before the family sell the rights to the orignial rules they need to think about the significance of the very history as well as the tireless efforts and time put into planning. There was so much dedication there. The best alternatives to take for the Naismith family is storing the first hand record of the game in a secret location or donating it to a museum. At least then everyone will appreciate the sentiment.

Hornets "home" rotation doesn't affect their sensational rookie's play,

The first half of the season has been inconvenient for the New Orleans Hornets. Since Hurricane Katrina they're moved to new locations for home games. Oklahoma City and Baton Rouge are the current venues. Despite the lack of hometown identity the Hornets are playing decent basketball. Last season they won only 18. So far they're 11-13 and look to break their losing mark within 2 weeks.

If the Hornets can credit one person for their recent turnaround it's got to be rookie G Chris Paul. In Sunday's contest in a win against the Spurs Paul just fell short of a triple-double, needing only one assist. He collected 12 rebounds in the game. Forget about the other numbers. That's a tall order to fill for any guard. How many other short players in the league can collect that many boards? Averaging close to 17.0 ppg and 7.8 assists he's already developed into a team leader and is top candidate for rookie of the year honors.

Whether the Hornets find a permanent home in Louisiana this season or not they're got an x-factor in Chris Paul. He's a good fit in a lineup which includes other emerging young stars like Desmond Mason, J.R. Smith, David West, and the quality veteran P.J. Brown. This team shouldn't be overlooked or took for granted. There is enough punch and talent on the squad to fret and challenge opponents. In due time hopefully this team can return to New Orleans and regenerate a fan base.

Shaq back with new Miami coach

The Miami Heat's recent restructure pushes them in the right direction. With the resignation of Coach Stan Van Gudy, the organization looked to an wise familar veteran to serve as a replacement. Pat Riley has returned, taking over for the remainder of the season. With a healthy Shaq back in the lineup and an amazing cast things are starting to work out okay. Dwayne Wade has kept the Heat afloat, picking up the slack on offense averaging 26.7 ppg. Alonzo Mourning has served as a formal substitute for Shaq, putting up solid numbers (8.0 rpg, 3.7 bpg).

Since the hiring of Pat Riley the Heat are 2-0 while posting a 13-10 record. The slick-haired Riley is what this team needed. He boasts an impressive career record (1172-589 regular season)and is a well respected veteran of the game. He's also a great motivator. His principles and style of teaching will have a psychological effect on the team by instilling absolute confidence in his players. With all-star lineup Riley will get the most of each player, using their individual talents and abilities in a routine plan to win.

Now the eastern conference has got a lot more interesting. Coach Riley, styling with his 50's greaser look(there is nothing with the hair style)wearing his custom made professional suits, will again be seen pacing back and forth along the sidelines shouting instructions and barking at refs. His suave manner and savvy nature are pivotal to the overall game plan. His leadership and disclipline could be very likely lead the Miami Heat to the promise land. Los Angeles: Refusing to suck this season

Finally the city of Los Angeles has another team they can have faith in and enjoy watching. Fans have waited so long for the the Clippers to break out of their humiliating losing slump, which accounted for a good...oh 30 years or so. Since an awesome team has been assembled(Not the Lakers, this team has hit an all-time low and Kobe Bryant isn't the solution now)in L.A. fans can go to games with optimism. They have the reassurance of not being encouraged by the PA announcer to bring an extra pair of tennis shoes to the game because they might just get to play. This would only be in effect in blow outs or when the fans couldn't take it anymore, demanding to march on the court and take control. Those ugly days of disappointment and despair are over.

Lead by former Duke Blue Devil, Elton Brand, the Los Angeles Clippers are making noise in the Mid-West conference. At 14-4 they're turning around their level of play big time. Brand is averaging 22.1 points and 11.0 rebounds a game. Sure this team doesn't have a bunch of big-name players, but with the likes of athletes like Sam Cassell, Corey Maggette, Cuttino Mobley, and Chris Wilcox they can deliver. They're out to prove that if any team takes them lightly, they're going to beat them. That's a far cry from years past when the Clippers used to beg for mercy. Starting forward, Corey Maggette is making his presence felt too. He's averaging 22.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game.

Other teams in the west and east will have to be weary of this Clippers team. Forget about them rolling over and dying. Remember they have dignity now. Can the Clippers make the playoffs? That will be made clear later...no need to jinx them(oops!) Nothing will stand in their way if they continue their superb play. Well, look who doesn't suck anymore! O'Clippers, what a way to bring in the new year!

This magnificent Wizard

Since his days as a unmolded prospect at UNC Antawn Jamison is moving his career in the right direction. He's come a long way. After starting his pro career at Golden State in 1998 then being traded to the Mavericks, Jamison has found a home in Washington. Alongside Wizards teammate Gilbert Arenas he strives to help the Wizards make the playoffs for the second year in a row.

So far in the season Antawn is averaging 21.1 points, 11.5 rpg, and 2.0 apg. His veteran leadership on the Wizards is influential. The sterling performances and contribution he brings to the table serves as motivation for the entire team. He never quits out there on the floor even when he's not feeling 100%. By making a dazzling plays on offense and defense, Jamison sparks a rejuvenated energy amongst his teammates. They look up to him. The opposition has to look out for the lanky 6'8 small forward when he get in a groove or is on fire.

Along with inside scoring and consistent rebounding Jamison is becoming a much improved outside shooter. He's a 37% shooter from behind the arch. With the season drifting into the second half that number is likely to increase. What makes the former UNC Tarheel such an valued asset to the Wizards is the minutes he gives on the floor each game and his commanding ability. That and also his teammates respect him. His crafted skills shows how well he works and performs with guys like Gilbert Arenas, Caron Bulter,and Brendan Haywood. Jamison makes them better players as they feed off his energy and strengths. The Wizards will succeed in the Eastern Conference, finishing within third place and capturing another playoff slot. Go Wiz!

VT came oh so close in Camden

The Hokies basketball team is suprising the ACC with their flashy style of play. They came moments away from upsetting #1 ranked Duke in Camden Indoor Stadium on Sunday. The evening concluded for them, however with a shocking, unbelievable twist. After VT's Coleman Collins made a terrific tip in with less than 2 seconds to go the game appeared to be over. Then a lengthy delay ensued with the officials trying to find out how much time was left on the game clock. 1.6 seconds was put on the clock. (If you ask me the Hokies got cheated a bit. Home court favorism)

Duke guard Sean Dockery received a half court pass and heaved a shot just a couple feet from the half court line that sank through the net for the game winner! The Hokies defense was reluctant to get too close in light of drawing a foul to send Duke to the free-throw line. Instead Virginia Tech watched in astonishment with broken hearts. They gave the Blue Devils one heck of a fight though, staying close for most of the game. They trailed by 12 points with 3:30 to go and then took the lead with under 2 seconds. Despite the loss, VT is 5-3 and an explosive, talented group that will have a serious presence in the ACC this year. They'll seek revenge against Duke next time around and the finale maybe completely different.

Davis revamping Warriors' offense

The Golden State Warriors have a miracle in the form of a 6'5 stocky point guard who brings life and energy to a long struggling team. Baron Davis was a great addition to the Warriors during the second half of last season. Despite his short comings with nagging injuries he's propelled them to a new level. He's averaging 16.0 points, 8.8 assists, and 2.3 steals a game, though is not 100% healthy. As of today the team's record is 11-6. A decent start, but a far improvement from previous years. They also had a good stretch towards the end of last season, winning 12 of their last 19 games.

The offensive attack for the Warriors caters to Davis' strengths. He gets to create shots for his teammates, providing increased scoring opportunities and driving in the paint for points himself. The versatile former UCLA Bruins and New Orleans Hornets star knows how to draw the defense to him, opening up these scoring opportunities for teammates. He's a vocal leader who takes charge on court. With guys like Troy Murphy, Adonal Foyle, and Mike Dunleavy keeping up with his style of play he keeps them on notice during games and dictates motivation and encouragement when they make mistakes or fall off the same page.

With 9 straight years eluding the playoffs some feel this is the year for Golden State. It's too early to start thinking about postseason predictions and this team must overcome the rising competition in the Mid-West and Pacific. The Clippers of all teams remain in first place in their division right now. With other teams just warming up expect Phoenix, Seattle, and San Antonio to climb to the on top. The Warriors have their work cut for them in search of a fifth or sixth seed to enter the playoffs. Best of luck to this resurgent team, led by the amazing Baron Davis.

Hall of fame ballot excludes Rose

Of all the disappointments fans and much of the baseball world has dealt with in the last year(steroids, embarrassing record by Royals, controversial rumor about Manny Ramirez being traded) and now Pete Rose gets his final shafting. The MLB commissioner has got a lot of balls to not reinstate Pete Rose on the ballot for the Hall of Fame. The rotten voters who had held the deciding outcome in the election process really screwed this baseball Great over big time. Some of these critics wouldn't recognize talent if it kicked them in the ass! Yes, Pete Rose betted on baseball and admitted it. What's this got to do with performance and achievements as a player? Those inconsiderate, heartless bastards...how dare they dignify a true baseball legend.

The list of names which WERE on the recent ballot failed in comparison to "Charlie Hustle." Such candidates included Dale Murphy, Doc Gooden, Gary Gaetti, John Wetteland, Willie McGee, Jack Morris, Hal Morris, and Walt Weiss. Are you kidding me? With the exception of maybe Dale Murphy the rest of these guys couldn't even hold Pete Rose's jockstrap(Not that they'd actually want to). We're talking about a lifetime .300 plus hitter with over 3,000 hits and 2,000 runs. Plus he was a perennial All-Star. Yeah, I guess that's not good enough for the douchebags who didn't think he belonged in Cooperstown.

Suppose Rose was a woman beater, hit men, drug addict, or gigolo. If that was the case he'd be accepted into the Hall of Fame even after the bad publicity received. He'd be welcomed with open arms into enrishment. This why is players like Doc Gooden get the free pass. His criminal record doesn't affect his selection on the ballot. Why should Pete Rose suffer from his private betting in a similar scenario. His actions did involve the game of baseball, resulting in being banned for life. That's justifiable, but refusing to give him proper consideration for the Hall is disrespectful and hypocritical. That's right, calling him one of the best players of all-time then disconnecting him from baseball years after he broke a rule is wrong. Give the man a break. Examine him as a Major Leaguer not as a gambler. This standpoint will show that he deserves the grand honor. So wise up decision makers and vote him in the Hall!

ACC basketball

With the college basketball season already underway and several top players lost to the pros there is a major change in the ACC. The competition will still be fierce, but the usual teams that reign supreme are absense of senority. With less experienced talent the door is open wider for low ranked teams to exceed expectations. Now Clemson, Virginia Tech, NC state, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Maryland, and Florida State are better matched up against each other and the rest of the competition. Of course, Duke looks to have the best team with returning team leaders J.J. Redick and Sheldon Williams. However, Duke and UNC are far from unbeatable this year. They're not going to run away from the ACC pack(barring a miracle season).

The departure of last year's big names, Sean May, Raymond Felton, Julius Hodge, Rashad McCants, John Gilchrist, Jarret Jack, and Daniel Ewing allows even potential for most teams in the league. There will be closer games, especially between the big rivals. Coaches may have to rely more on savvy strategizing in these games rather than expect their players to "create" in the clutch. All players will learn from routine plays and a lot from teammates in practices. Playmakers, scorers, and defensive specialists will be developed and skills will be refined. Expect another thrilling season of ACC basketball. This is where young student-athletes become tommorrow's NBA superstars.

Charitable giving delights hometown community

On monday, Cleveland Cavs' superstar Lebron James bought turkeys and donated groceries to impoverished families at a Baptist church in downtown Cleveland. This came as a Thanksgiving treat. His mere presence was a thrill for many fans and supporters. Personally delivering food at the church and in his hometown of Akron brightened everyone's day. The third year NBA all-star showed his generosity and compassion. He served as a surprise blessing. The Antioch Baptist church appreciated his kind donations which will provide Thanksgiving meals for many needy families. If more and more professional athletes would do this, it would make an impact on numerous struggling commmunities during Thanksgiving and encourage others to give.

No one should be without a meal, especially on Thanksgiving. Lebron is an inspiration by the example he sets. He is a great, young role model for kids. Doing what's right or what you feel is right usually only leads to positive things. That's why I admire the guy, he's not selfish. I think Lebron James will be rewarded for his good deed. His prize may come in the form of a playoff birth this season. He definitely deserves it. Good luck in your pursuit, Lebron. You the man!

The NBA has a minor league?

To my surprise, I've found out the NBA has a new league for development called the NBA-D League. This explains why a couple undrafted players or third round picks are being activated on NBA rosters. Well, an environment with a beginner's approach for other basketball players is a positive step for the NBA. The D-League will not only give hope to young and underdeveloped ballers, but the chance to build quality skills to survive in the NBA. It's good to see that not just any athlete can make it to the NBA. Otherwise there'd be a ton of guys making fools of themselves, taking unintelligent risks, getting long-term injuries, and having trouble moving into other career paths. I think the D-league will help these pro athletes-in- training find their place. Maybe some will realize they're better suited coaching or managing.

This experimental league is only in it's first year, but I already don't like a few aspects of it. First of all, the team names don't sound too appealing or sporty. Who wants to watch or root for a basketball team called the Forth Worth Flyers, Austin Toros, Fayetteville Patriots, or the Florida Flame? These are crappy names in my opinion. Also, the mascots for these teams will suck. They don't seem to fit well for the sport. The cities do have a big influence here, but the NBA tradition of either using a type of revelant animal/creature or appropriate state affiliation should be kept.

The other area which concerns me is how the coaches, owners, and the commissioner want to "experiment" with the rules. I hope as in rules they don't mean policies or regulations. If that's the case, the players might get the impression they have leeway to get away with random illegal violations/crimes like, oh...possession of a firearm in an arena, statutory rape, drug distribution/use, assault/battery on fans and coaches, headbutting refs, and making fake excuses(my home caught on fire, I was in a car wreck, cellphone was dead) for not attending team practices. The list can go on and on really, which is why those in charge need to clarify the word "experiment". Players don't need to get the idea they'll only be slapped on the wrist and given extra chances for misconduct because they might be crazy enough to show up at a live game with hookers while wearing a pimp suit or be straight up high after smoking several joints. The D-league will then bring shame to the NBA, which at times has already shamed professional basketball with shocking travesties.

Lebron sets milestone in Cavs' overtime win

The Cleveland Cavailers should thank their lucky stars that they have Lebron James. He continues to impress and progress as an NBA superstar. Sunday, the Cavs overcame the Orlando Magic with a overtime victory, 108-100. The story of the night belonged to James. He became the youngest player ever (20 yrs. old) to reach 4,000 career points. He surpassed Kobe Byrant who set the old mark at 21 years of age. Lebron finished the game with 26 points while helping his team improve to 5-2. Larry Huges added 22 points for the Cavs as well.

With a confidence stride Cleveland is on a roll, starting the season out right. Tonight they'll meet the equally hot Washington Wizards, led by Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison. "King" James (as referred to by many)may go on a offensive rampage, showcasing his fast developing skills and natural talent. He is the future of the NBA. With help from new additions on the team (Caron Butler, Larry Hughes, and Donyell Marshall) Lebron hopefully won't have to carry the load the entire season. Look for more great things to come from this dazzling, promising phenom.

Without Shaq, Heat still look impressive

With a fresh start in a new season, the future looks bright for the Miami Heat. There is no doubt the loss of Shaq due to injury and his infinite commerical appeal is a blow to this team. Despite his absence, the GM has made smart off-season acquisitions. The Heat are a force to reckon with again. With the arrival of Gary Payton, Antoine Walker, and Jason Williams they've got plenty of fire power to compete with the best in the Eastern conference. I like their chances even without big Shaq "Daddy". Where did Miami get the money though to sign these players? That's what I want to know. This new starting lineup and bench is awesome. Not only do they have the players mentioned above, but also Dwayne Wade and Alonzo Mourning(underrated). They've got the defense and offense to match about any team in the league.

Dwayne Wade must step up as the leader on this team while Shaq is absence. This guy has took the NBA by storm. Without Shaq in the lineup, hogging up the minutes on the court and the ball it's gives other talented players a chance to showcase their skills a bit more. Yeah, I know O'Neal is a dominant Center(tops in the NBA), but let's face it, the offense revolves around him too much. So I think it's good in a way that he's gone for a while. In the meanwhile the coach can experiment with different offensive strategies which may involve a lot of screen and rolls or outside shooting. The diverse group of players need to have fun and enjoy the fact that Shaq is not around to hog up all the glory and publicity. (Nothing personal with Shaq, great guy and all, just seems to be endorsing and promoting products on TV all the time. With his salary, it's okay to tone it down). Yeah, I'm sure these players on Miami will make for a awesome basketball unit in the 05-06 season.

Suspension of mascots, a rarity in sports

Every year we hear about incidents involving players or coaches getting ejected and suspended. This is normally a result of excessive arguing, verbal abuse, and fighting. Participants get riled up then things get way out of control. However, one group that never seems to break the rules are mascots. Just like athletes they're on hand to entertain an audience. Either that or serve as a floor mat for adult fans and a playmate for children. Sure they take their share of abuse, but never lose their cool. I admire that level of professionalism even though they dress up in silly animal costume while lowing and debacing themselves by dancing on top of a dugout or belcher for the amusement of spectators. Mascots show team spirit for a crowd.

Generating energy and noise for a home team can lead to a team's comeback. Why would mascots won't to kill this momentum by cursing out a disgruntled fan, cracking someone over the head with a beer bottle, or spitting on an umpire for making a bad call? These adorable mascots would never committ such a henous act on a normal day, but when they're having a bad day and start drinking alcohol their attitude changes. A sweet, enduring mascot can turn into a real asshole. This is where parents force their kids to look the other way because knowing the shocking reality of it all may damage them for the rest of their lives. Nine times out of ten a situation like this won't arise, but it's smart to keep an eye out just in case. One minute a cherished mascot can be seen shaking hands with fans the next he's choking a ballpark employee and striking him with a bat on the ground for bumping into you too hard. Witnesses of such a vicious attack will gasp, losing their attention on the game. If mascots did cause a big scene and get suspended, it would be all over the local newspapers. The headline would read, "Stadium employee beaten motionless with Louisville slugger by team mascot."

Former ACC standouts invade NBA

In the first week of the NBA season, rookies in the league are gaining exposure with limited playing time. Coaches are experimenting with players, testing strategies/plays, and getting a good idea of how developed these first-year wonders are in this early stage of their professional careers. Despite a rising flock of youngsters straight out of high school entering the league such as Andrew Bynum and C.J. Miles, a strong crop of ACC players exist too. Their memorable, outstanding performances in college render them as the most prominent in my view. Of course, other top picks (Andrew Bogut, Hakim Warrick, and Deron Williams)will hold their own in the NBA and may be deemed the best "break-through" rookies at the end of the season.
I think though with the guys from the ACC, more rivalries will be created among teams. Knowing the tenacious, competitive spirits these guys have will drive the energy and nature of professional basketball. Their presence is good for the game. New comers like Chris Paul(Wake Forest),Raymond Felton(UNC), Julius Hodge(NC state), Rashad McCants(UNC), and Jarret Jack(Georgia Tech) have a ton of talent and will only grow into more fine-tuned athletes after a couple years of experience in the NBA. I know they'll make their team's record improve or at least give the teams some balance. Most of the draft picks will make their mark in the NBA, therefore making ACC college basketball proud and filled with honor.

Dennis Rodman, back in the public spotlight

Just as the basketball season gets underway, a face from the past reemerges in the news again. That's right, former Bulls and Pistons standout, Dennis Rodman has screwed up again. The good news for him is he didn't get arrested or at least not yet. Rodman was charged with a speeding ticket while cruising the highway 95 mph in Denver, Colorado. Driving his Lamborghini was a mistake. A cop pulled him over and wrote him the ticket, not impressed at all when approaching his vehicle and realizing exactly who he was dealing with. The police officer had seen his share of dyed-haired, nose-pierced ugly biker dudes and travesites. So Rodman really was no different. "The Worm" as he is known by many was fined and required to pay over $500 in traffic court.

It's amazing how professional athletes choose to spend their money. Conserving money on food and gas isn't really a big concern for rich athletes. It apparently was for Dennis, who stiffed a country store/gas station after filling his car up with $40 worth of gas then driving off without paying. Yes, this is true. How low of a scumbag and cheap do you have to be to do this? It's pathetic when a wealthy, once famous sports star resorts to such tactics. If there was another reason for him not paying, it would be laziness. Now that would be inexcusable for anybody. It's beyond logic though what happened next. Rodman didn't get in any trouble, however since a fan, lacking good judgment spotted him, was informed of the stolen gasoline, and decided to pay the $40. This person actually PAID for that rich bastard's ride home. What an freaking IDIOT! Why in hell didn't someone call the police?? Make Rodman return to that gas station, publicly apologize, and arrest his ass for theft and being so damn cheap!

This story really bothers me. I can't understand how professional athletes or in Rodman's case, washed-up has beens(only good at rebounding and dressing up in drag) take their luxuries in life for granted. He didn't try to check his wallet or even attempt to reach for a credit card, roll of cash, or nothing! This is being unappreciative of fame and fortune. That is why athletes don't need to be paid high salaries. Oh, they'll go through the money like water, buying rolex watches, expensive clothes, $300 sunglasses, fast sports cars, SUVs, heroine, weed, and 50-room mansions. But for God Sakes, don't ask them to pay for fuel or child support because that's too much of an inconvenience. Dennis still has not learned his lesson and it may take several years in prison for some sense to beaten into him.
