MLB trades and swirling rumors

Teams in contention are searching for an additional weapon or talent to put themselves over the edge. Talks involving players on the A's claim they are going to be trade in the off-season. Mark Kotsay and Eric Chavez are two names which have been mentioned. They're still pushing for a playoff spot in the West and will have a challenging time winning the pennant or getting the wildcard. The Chicago Cubs picked up veteran pitcher Steve Traschel, who started his career with the club in 1991. This deal was pulled off by Cubs GM Jim Hendry and former owner Andy McPhail. Traschel should be a valuable asset in the Cubs rotation. He's had proven success with the Mets.

Several players' future is uncertain. For instance, the Rockies third baseman Garrett Atkins may have to find a new home after the season ends. Colorado hasn't made it official whether they will renew his contract. He's been a productive force in the young Rockies lineup this year. If the Rockies do the unthinkable and win the division they'll most likely consider keeping the hard-hitting third baseman around. The White Sox's Juan Uribe seeks a contract extension, but may not be picked up for another season at $5 million a year.

A few teams will need to find reliable arms for their bullpens before the regular season ends. Otherwise they'll have to make sacrifices with other star players or bench players who serve limited roles. Calling up prospects to fill spots won't be the right solutions unless of the course you're the Red Sox. Can't wait to see what happens in the AL West and NL Central coming down to the wire. It's sure to turn into a real nail-biter!

Red Sox fall to Yankees 4-3

These late season matchups between the Yankees and Red Sox usually are intense. Fights can break out at any time while trash talking becomes routine. Wednesday night the game favored the Yankees as A-Rod launched his 44th homerun off Josh Beckett in the 7th inning. The dismal hitting by Boston allowed Roger Clemens to record his 6th win. The Rocket didn't give them many good pitches to hit.

The only bright spot for the Red Sox in the 4-3 loss was David Ortiz's solo homer (25) which came in the 6th off Clemens. New York has a bit of catching up to do in the East. Their rivals currently hold a 6-game lead over them. Give it to the final two weeks and the Yanks were probably be ahead or within a 1.5 of Boston. Most every season that's how it plays out. Tension will rise to a new high as both teams will fight for top position. I won't be surprised if Boston wins around 95-100 games the way they make runs in August and September.

Today Boston tries to avoid the sweep as Curt Schilling (8-5) pitching against Chien-Ming Wang (15-6). The lineup will again be without Manny Ramirez due to a strained muscle. The battle in the Bronx has gone the home team's way, but look for those gutsy Sox to rebound in Game 3. They want to at least salvage the series before heading back to Fenway Park to face the Orioles and BlueJays. The Sox fans still believe in 2007. A playoff birth is right around the corner!

Vick bit around the collars with dogfighting, PETA is pissed!

Usually I don't delve into football topics here. However, the Michael Vick situation is just too good not to examine. Well, the world now knows he signed a plea agreement for the charges brought against him. I heard about a support group outside the Richmond, VA courthouse, holding up encouraging signs and whatnot. My interest though lies with PETA and their reaction. This group of activists, among other related organizations won't take these animal cruelty cases laying down. Oh, they'll picket the streets for weeks....holding up pictures of mutilated dogs while relaying self-inflicted acts of punishment and planned attacks of violence on the NFL football star. Well....former NFL star quarterback.

These feminist groups out there who happen to be passionate pet lovers will also come down hard on Vick. Sure they might not come across as the malicious type, but once they gang up in a group they WILL BEAT THE HOLY CRAP OUT OF ANYONE THEY OPPOSE! Take it from Rodney King and JFK...Mike keep your ass in your limo. Otherwise you better be fast and have wall to wall security. Once they start biting below the belt and kneeing from any possible angle thats all she wrote.

I'm sure the fines mean nothing to Vick. He's got to contest with the eventual sentence handed to him. It's ashamed to see sports stars throw their careers away. Every athlete has the potential for greatness until they go and committ such crimes. At least he's smart enough to come forth and admit his involvement with dogfighting. He may have gotten off better if he'd betted on games. Then again he may have ended sharing a cell with NBA referee Tim Donahey. It could have been a lot worse if a bunch of police dogs were let loose and ravaged the football star.

Dunn hits game-winning jack to prevail Reds over Braves 9-7

There hasn't been much for the Cincinnati Reds to cheer about this season. They are towards the bottom of the NL Central with a very dim chance at the postseason. Last night they pulled off a come from behind victory in extra innings to defeat the streaking Braves. Adam Dunn was the player of the game, crushing his 35th homerun in the 12th inning off Bob Wickman. It's a shame this club isn't in the thick of the wildcard race because they have a productive offensive lineup. Pitching is their issue this year.

The Reds were out hit 13-11 and withstood homeruns from Chipper Jones (25) and Mark Teixeira (10). Atlanta falls to 66-62 and are 6 games back in the East. Mike Goslig recorded his 3rd win, entering the game in the final frame to get the decision. Andruw Jones pumped out 3 hits while Chipper had 5 RBIs, doing most of the damage in the lineup. Bobby Cox may start to feel the pressure with the final month of regular play approaching. Atlanta has to make a run if they're to jump in front of the Mets. Philly will no doubt be fighting for that wildcard spot along with the Rockies, Brewers, Cardinals, Padres, and Dodgers.

One thing aiding the Braves is the hot-hitting Teixeira who they acquired at the trade deadline. He's on fire, hitting 5 homers in his last 5 games! His performance alone won't get the Braves into the playoffs, but he will be a major factor in key games. For the Reds since they didn't trade for enough pitching all they can do is finish out the season and look towards rebuilding in the off-season. As a long-time Griffey fan it's real disappointing not to see him have an opportunity to appear in the playoffs. I don't see him winning a championship in Cincy. Better luck to the veteran All-Star slugger next year.

Mets clubhouse attendant rats out steroid users

It was only a matter of time before someone in MLB spilled the beans again. Why not everyone involved in this baseball scandal reveal all of the hidden information? It's going to surface sooner or later anyway. This week a former Mets clubhouse attendant announced player names he distributed steroids to throughout his 10-year tenure with New York organization. He's agreed to testify in front of a grand jury and meet with MLB's steroid investigators. Maybe in the coming weeks MLB will shade more light on who these players are which were connected to this illegal activity.

The NBA ref gambling, Michael Vick's dog fighting, and now this incident springs up. I guess drugs and corruption will always find a place in sports...which is a real shame. There used to be a time when fans didn't have to hear about these disappointing stories and enjoy players' natural abilities who didn't cheat to win (or did a good job of getting away with it). If a crackdown hasn't been imposed on baseball clubhouses I don't see how MLB will ever cut down on drug use. Random smoke from blunts can even rise in the air around the locker room and it's no big deal!

Bud Selig hasn't reassured baseball fans integrity will be restored in the game and doesn't go out of way to take drastic measures to stop corruption. He's too busy sitting on plush recliners in luxury boxes and counting money. Damn it Selig! Get off your high horse and take affirmative action (start serving those suspensions and pay cuts) because the fans deserve better. They pay good money for tickets and ballpark merchandise to watch their favorite teams and players only to find out one guy everyone knows in the clubhouse is a drug pusher and several admired performers have over a dozen horse hormone pills stashed away in their locker.

This ex-Mets employee is facing major long-term charges. He's being fined $500,000 and could serve up to 25 years in prison. People will truly risk their life and good name for money. Just wait until the client names are rattled off on a list and the players get busted. It's going to be a tough pill to swallow (much like the horse pills and methamphetamines they've popped). Before the baseball world knows it bat boys and mascots will come forth, revealing the shocking accounts of how they assisted with syringe procedures to players and smuggled dime bags and unprescribed pain killers into the clubhouse. Yeah...more shame to the game is yet to come.

Johan Santana rips Texas a new one

The ball was rocking for Johan Santana Sunday night as the Twins defeated the Rangers 1-0 behind a pure gem. The star southpaw flirted with a new record as he fanned 17 batters! His stuff was blazing and fooled all the Texas hitters. He went on to record his 13th win of the season. Catcher Mike Redmond said his counterpart didn't shake him off even once in the game. Santana pitched 8 innings for a 2-hit shutout.

Ben Sheets was the last pitcher to pull off a similar strikeout performance with 18 in 2004 with the Brewers. I'm more entertained and drawn to high-run scoring contests, but it's nice once and and a while to see these magnificent pitching gems. With the win Minnesota hangs around in the playoff picture, moving to 62-61 on the year. They have a chance for the wild card in such a tight AL race. Right now Seattle has the lead in the top spot.

Minnesota will need their star pitcher to muster up more stellar performances if the club is to remain close in the race. I think the Yankees and M's will be the greatest opposition to overcome for that final spot. With Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau's steady bats in the lineup they have a good shot. A record breaking K showcase by Santana would also be a thrill to watch.

Yankees, Rivera get slapped around by Orioles

The Yankees can't ever be too sure of themselves these days. They once again are locked into a battle in the AL East race. Last night they came close, but their trusty closer Mariano Rivera didn't have some of his best stuff or good command. The Yankees managed to tie the game in the 9th with a three-run shot by first baseman Shelley Duncan then the game went into extra inning. Aubrey Huff smacked a 2-run homer off Rivera in the 10th inning. That wrapped up the victory for Baltimore.

New York was outhit 12-10. Alex Rodriguez did go 4-for-4 with a run scored, but the rest of the lineup produced very little. They've lost 2-of-3 from the Orioles to close the series. At current the Yanks trail Boston 5 games in the AL East. Capturing the wildcard won't be easy either as the Mariners, Tigers, Indians, and Twins fight for position. It will most likely come down to the final week of the season in determining the final playoff spot. The Yankees may have a better shot at the pennant...who really knows now?

M's wreaking havoc in AL West, Sexson's walkoff seals win

Don't count those gutsy Seattle Mariners out of the playoff race. They put together a good run in the second half, watching their overall record soar to 66-50. Last night they won in dramatic fashion with a walk-off homer by Richie Sexson in the 9th to prevail over the Twins 4-3. The club finds themselves in a tight wildcard race. It's been a tough season for Sexson, who's been booed by Seattle fans all year for his lackluster performances. Yet he went 2-for-4 Monday night with 3 RBIs and a big-time game-winning solo homer.

Neither Johan Santana or Felix Hernandez got the decision in the game. They each pitched for at least 6 innings and yield no more than 3 runs. Joe Mauer was thrown out at third in the 7th trying to stretch a double into a triple. That out helped save the game for Seattle. Their 8 total hits stood up in a pitcher's duel until late innings. After the series at home with Minnesota the M's will see the WhiteSox again for a three-game set then go on the road to face the Twins.

This team has it's work cut for the final stretch of the season. Right now they're 3 games behind the Angels in the division. They can catch them with the enough persistence and streaky play. Felix Hernandez, Jose Guillen, and Richie Sexson will be key performers during crunch time. Their veteran guys on the roster should give them a boost and motivate the rest of the game. Come on M's, push for that playoff spot!

Way too much celebrating for new homerun champ

Already a day after Barry Bonds broke Hank Aaron's homerun record the hip-hip and hoorays continue, well at least in San Francisco for the most part. Of course the media drew all attention again on the veteran star outfielder as he hit career homer no. 757 like this came as some surprise. There is more than one reason why NL pitcher walked Bonds so frequently again this season: they didn't want to give up a historic homerun, being noted as the guy Bonds tied or broke the record against, rather faced the less menacing batter behind him in the order or just couldn't stand the guy.

So the record is now history as if this event wasn't destined to happen in 2007. People wonder why Hank Aaron wasn't in attendance for this huge baseball gala. At his age does it really matter whether or not he was at the game? He's retired...let the old Hall of Famer be and not bother him. I'm sure he's disappointed, but if he's upset he'll get over it. Long after he passes away there will be another baseball Great who will eventually shatter Bonds' mark. (I can't wait until the day!) At least Bonds conducted himself with a degree of class or didn't seem to 'shove' his feat in anyone's face (then again I didn't see the whole on-field celebration footage, he may very well could have).

I think baseball fans (at least 60%) aren't happy about Bonds achieving the new record. Some don't respect him enough to root for him and others think he can do no wrong. Personally, as I've mentioned here before I don't care for the guy...never have. Ken Griffey Jr., Ryne Sandberg, Randy Johnson, Frank Thomas and Cal Ripken Jr. those of some of the players I most admired in the 90's. Bonds definitely stands out from the pack and has accomplished an amazing feat those other guys never did. He claims the record now isn't tarnished, but we'll all have to wait the BALCO case is finally closed.

Pedro set for comeback with Mets, labors in rehab stints

Good news is presented in the near future for the New York Mets. With a quality brand of star players on the roster they expect to welcome back one more dearly missed performer. Pedro Martinez is pitching in a rehab stint this week and is expected to rejoin the team soon. Right in the middle of the playoff race the Mets gets so lucky. The 35-year-old pitcher had his rotator cuff repaired in October. He's been determined to make a return all season after sitting all of 2006.

His spot in the rotation if he's healthy enough to pitch by September will make the Mets a formidable contender, giving them another sharp veteran right-hander. They're already a tough team to beat now just wait until Pedro gets back! I don't envy any NL teams in the East like the Braves. It's going to another tight race for the NL wildcard again. I don't see Atlanta winning the pennant for the second straight year. Their addition of Mark Teixeira will help, but won't put them over the edge.

Martinez will make a rehab start on Wednesday and the franchise will see how things go. The 3-time Cy Young winner isn't going to give up hope on his late season emergence. The Mets feel that whatever they can get out of him on the mound will be beneficial. I'd like to see appear in the playoffs, rather it would be okay by me (since I'm a Cubs fan) if was unable to start any games in a possible Cubs vs. Mets NL championship series. Until then we'll see what happens.

Gagne expected to give Red Sox boost in bullpen

After watching his teammate, Mark Teixeira find a new home in Atlanta then crack a 3-run homer last night to lead the Braves to victory, former Ranger Eric Gagne is looking toward good things with his new team in Boston. There is always that tight competitive nature between the Bo Sox and Yankees, especially now waning into the final 2 months of the regular season. The veteran closer makes a good fit in Boston as his talent was being wasted with the Rangers. They have little chance of clinching the wild card.

The Red Sox rotation now has a complimentary reliever to be added to the list of players like Josh Beckett, Curt Schilling, Tim Wakefield, and Dice K. It was a smart move by Gagne to waive his no-trade clause and get the heck out of dodge. Plus Jonathan Papelbon could see more action from middle relief and a valuable setup man for the closer. The AL East leaders have won 7 of their last 10 games and currently hold a 7-game lead over the Yankees.

Much like Mark Teixeira the notable hurler known for his saves record while a Dodger finds himself in a position to find a pennant and make a run in the postseason. The offense looks better on paper for the Red Sox and by the numbers is more productive than the Braves' lineup. Everyone in the race in both leagues wants an edge and Eric Gagne can be the x-factor for Boston. I expect them to finish first in the AL East. Their real competition will be the Angels, Tigers, and Indians.

Gwynn, Ripken make impression as new Hall inductees

Congratulations to now Hall of Famers, Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr. These two class acts were bound for the Hall. They left their mark on the game, playing with grace and intelligence. Many baseball Greats were on hand in Cooperstown this week to be apart of the ceremony. Such names as Ozzie Smith, Wade Boggs, Bruce Sutter, Dave Winfield, Fergie Jenkins, and many others. The Orioles prime time third baseman was honored and noted for his 3,000 hits and most consecutive games played record.

Former Padres All-Star, Tony Gwynn talked about his relationships with Ozzie Smith and Ted Williams. He claimed whenever he made the All-Star team he wanted his locker to be next to the Wizard's because the shortstop always like to have fun and laugh. Gwynn felt it was best not to take records or special baseball events too seriously and just concentrate on playing smart baseball. Ted Williams taught the younger Gwynn the art of hitting in the clutch or for a high average.

During one memorable chat when the Padres Great met Williams he asked him where his bat was and then proceeded to gnaw on it as a joke. Both stars, Gwynn for the NL and Ripken from the AL are deserving players whose names and jerseys belong in the Halls of Cooperstown. The next cast for 2008 may not be so promising as critics and fans are so sure guys like Mark McGwire and Andre Dawson will receive enough votes. One thing is for certain now, the Hall has added two memorable Greats to the list!

Teixeira on the trading block, who's next?

The Texas Rangers are unhappy with their performance this season. Who could blame them. They've got a power-driven lineup yet a decent starting rotation. One name which has swirled around in trade rumors is Mark Teixeira. The star third baseman is having an off-year compared to his previous 2 seasons with the organization. Texas is searching for solutions to salvage somewhat of a disappointing spring and summer. Sammy Sosa's name had been tossed around.

After launching his 600th career homerun against his former team, Sosa hasn't received much attention. Trading power and star value for better pitching seemed to be the route Texas is pursuing. At 46-56 the Rangers are dead last in the AL West trailing their division rivals by 13 games. They actually still have a chance to make a late run and at least grab the wild card. On the other hand that's easier said than done.

Teixeira is expected to head to the East Coast, preferably somewhere such as Atlanta. Personally I'd rather see him stay on the West coast since I'm a Cubs fan. He though could really have an impact on a team like the Giants, who have struggled most of the year. I don't think that deal will happen. I'd be happy if the switch-hitting slugger landed in Seattle! You never know with these crazy trade talks right before the deadline.

NBA referee Tim Donahey's ultimate career mistake

Why can't sports professionals (and those who claim to be) just enjoy playing, refereeing, and coaching the game? It's evident the NBA has it's share of problems these days with immoral decision making by players, owners, and now at the latest...refs. NBA ref Tim Donahey had to jump into the gambling pool. Who says refs don't fix games anymore? The dark days of the NBA continue as guys like this want to screw up the fun and excitement for everyone.

I don't know the whole story on this Donahey character, but what bothers me is that guys like him are slowly deteriorating the game of basketball because of their greed. Some of the NBA finest players are also included in this category. It's funny how the schemers and gamblers are so shocked when they get caught. They look all sad and worried. Taking such high risks with your career is ignorant especially if it's a sports career. What straight man on earth wouldn't enjoy having such a job position?

David Stern is supposed to be handling this matter with swift and fair penalties. It's time for him to assert more authority and be his foot down on corruption and trouble making before he becomes too short to be seen standing with a microphone at a podium (At press conferences he may even get lost in the shuffle). Too many active members in the league are getting away with too much crap. The illegal activities need to be contained to a certain extent.

Otherwise players and coaches will continue to be at each other's throats, firearms will be brought to stadiums, fights will occur on and off the court, and secret drug distribution networks will still flourish. Refs such as Tim Donahey ought to be ashamed of themselves and take pride in their work. Besides they may want to keep fans on their good side especially after they made a bunch of blind-sided lame ass calls to screw a team out of a close game. Yeah, Donahey you better watch your back!

It's down to 2 dingers: Bonds eyes tying Aaron's record

Usually I wouldn't waste time delving back into the Barry Bonds homerun pursuit. From a historical perspective, however it's worth discussing. See both sluggers have shown how generations have changed drastically. When Hammering Hank set the old record by passing Babe Ruth two eager fans rushed the field and rounded the bases only to be chased down and escorted off the field. Avid fans today will flock on the field when Barry hits that historic mark only they will be searching his back pockets for supplements and syringes.

Of course Barry Bonds has to get close to this major, highly anticipated and discussed record against my favorite team the Chicago Cubs. Why can't he do this against the Rockies, Brewers, or the D-backs? It doesn't effect them as much. Right when the Cubs are hot the Giants had to come in to town with the souped up, bald, big-headed Bonds. Really I don't have anything against the future Hall of Famer....he just seems to rub opposing fans the wrong way sometimes, okay all the time.

Hank Aaron looks to live to see the day his homerun record will be shattered. I don't thinks he really cares that much anymore after all the attention it's got. The fact that he's still alive and well, able to walk is his main concern (God knows the man isn't getting any younger). Then again the day Barry launches that magical homerun ball Hank will watching in the stands, pretends to be smiling and then utter, "That rotten SOB!"

Griffey Jr. jumps ahead of Frank Robinson on homerun list

With career homer no. 587 last night Ken Griffey Jr. moved into 6th place passing Frank Robinson on the all-time homerun list. Going 4-for-4 with an RBI to help the Reds defeat Atlanta 10-3. Griffey hit his 24th homerun of the season. He's only 15 homers behind Sammy Sosa for his career. What a sensational year the All-Star centerfielder is having! The kid is back!

Before the end of the season he will have over 600 homeruns. There is no doubt in my mind that the superstar slugger will eventually be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Everyone wonders what if for all those years he was injured...well he's still putting up impressive totals despite the number of games he's played. He's just in his mid-30s and looks to have several more seasons left in him.

I'm glad to see extra attention being placed on Griffey instead of all on Bonds because credit and recognition should be given where it's due. The Reds may stink this year, but it's not because of him. Ken is way on his way to more milestones in his career.

Rickey Henderson returns to MLB as Mets 1B coach

Former Major Leaguer Rickey Henderson is making a return to the Big Leagues...not as an active player, but as the Mets first base coach. This definitely a plus for the New York club loaded with star power and clutch hitters. The 48-year-old holds the Major League record for stolen bases (1406) and will be an excellent baseball adviser to the young talent on the team. His expertise knowledge on the base paths will pay dividends. I can't believe other teams didn't pick him up sooner as either an assistant coach or hitting coach.

It's for certain the Mets can learn patience from the wise star veteran of the past as he accumulated 2200 walks in his career. Don't forget about his ability to hit as well. He had over 120 hits in 13 seasons. That pretty darn good in any era of the game! A few years ago Henderson try to make a comeback with the Dodgers, working through the minor league system in hopes of gaining a spot on the roster. It was cut short as conditioning, health, and age played a big part in his departure.

I know if Rickey had it his way he'd suit up to play, starting sometimes and coming off the bench to fuel rallies late in games. If this happened the Mets would have two active guys available in their mid-to-late 40's. The lineup, however which consists of such names as Shawn Green, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, and David Wright will gain valuable insight on hitting and playing smart baseball with Henderson around. If the Mets get hot look out Atlanta because they might grab the division for their second straight year.

The ESPYs: A night of boasting with celebs getting in their 2-cents worth

The annual ESPYs awards are due up this month and as usual the hype of this show is nonstop airing on ESPN. Yeah, Lebron James will be there so will Tiger Woods, Peyton Manning, Charles Barkley, Magic Johnson, and a cast of other big name stars. I have to wonder how talk show hosts like Jimmy Kimmel however need to be presence. Sure he's a sports fan (nothing wrong with that), but is it necessary to have him start the show again? I'd personally rather see Michael Jordan or a baseball legend host.

For the most part this show just rags on famous sports players by celebrities who are jealous of them or try to make a name for themselves on national television. Such entertainment can't be complete without doing a few dress-up skits where singled-out athletes are poked fun of without going so far as getting slapped with a lawsuit. I can only imagine Barry Bonds showing up to this live event, decked out in a lavish three-piece suit and as he walks to the stage a bag of white substance falls out of his suit's pocket then a few moments later a syringe.

What a way to kill a show in an instance. Trust me after that there will be a loss for words and no one will be lining to shake the San Francisco's slugger hand. Yet fun will be had by all during the ESPYs and the fans will vote for their favorites. One thing will help the show: if any of the Dominican baseball players win an award they need to keep short and sweet. Otherwise the audience won't know what they hell they're talking about. Best luck to the top athletes in all sports!

Even an old, rich grouch deserves a special day

Well, happy 4th of July everyone. It's a time to celebrate independence for Americans while for others it's a special day to enjoy. Happy Birthday George Steinbreiner! Just another typical day for the Yankees owner except he may splurge a extra bit more other than the usual billions he spends on team payroll. Don't tell me A-Rod or Derek Jeter didn't buy 'Ole George (bag of bones) a lavish gift, perhaps a yacht, private jet, or who knows his own sleazy strip club!

Oh, that's right George probably already holds ownership in those commodities. While others will be setting off fireworks and grilling out today the baseball-minded senior citizen will be blowing up rows of candles on a huge birthday cake which reads, "You might be about to kick the bucket, but you're still rich as hell."

Joe Torre will not forget to express well wishes and greetings (while nonchalantly thanking the Yanks owner for not firing his ass during the Yankees shameful losing drought earlier this season). I guess for those trying to work their way up the ladder in the Yankees organization this is the best day to be 'kissing some ass' (wrinkling, sagging ass I might add). The interns at Yankee Stadium can have bright futures if they play their cards right. Old George don't spend too much on hookers...I mean players and enjoy your special day.

MLB 2007: The year of the no-hitter?

Already baseball fans have witnessed at least 1 no-hitter this season. The Tigers' Justin Verlander has already achieved this feat a few weeks ago. The 20-something rising star pitcher has a bright future in Detroit. In other close instances, Curt Schilling came within 1 out of tossing a no-hitter while Minnesota's Johan Santana went 7 innings in one start before giving up a base hit.

It's becoming more of a rarity for pitchers to throw perfect games and no-hitters. They're got so much more pressure and attention on them rather than sluggers shooting for the hit cycle or 3 homers in a game. I think no-hitters are tougher to achieve than teams who go on 15-20 game win streaks because only one player (for the most part) has control of the turn of the events in a game.

One star pitcher in particular that could very well be off a near perfect performance is Ben Sheets. He can be so dominating in starts that opponents don't have much a chance at the plate. The same goes for Carlos Zambrano, Dontrelle Willis, and Roy Halladay. These guys are more than capable of shutouts and put goose eggs across the scoreboard. I anticipate another no-hitter (possibly perfect game) before the season ends. It could turn out to be an unlikely lesser known player too.

Homerun chases and record breakers are always welcomed in MLB

With the recent publicity and attention placed on Sammy Sosa's career mark of 600 homeruns MLB doesn't seem to care much about making good on promises to carry out investigations. Every fan of the game knows baseball is popular than ever this time of year and MLB is making a killing off tickets, souvenirs at ballparks, and food vendors. The sports analysts and guru on TV keep referring to Barry Bonds' pursuit of Hank Aaron's homerun record. Yeah, we all know how close he is and with a flick of the wrist a long ball can be golfed into the upper deck.

The problem remains that superstars like Bonds and Sosa continue to ride the wave of high prestige and notority, but both have unanswered questions lying in their pasts. I used to be a big Sosa fan and I still kind of like the guy in a way, but he among others (McGwire, Giambi, etc.) need to set the record straight and be open with the public and media. Fans will truly respect him in the long after his career is over. For example, the reception Ken Griffey Jr. received when returning to Seattle was amazing. He's definitely earned the fans' respect. All great Major Leaguers need to do the same.

Ken Griffey Jr. and Sammy Sosa, fast approaching career milestones

Baseball has been good to both Sammy Sosa and Ken Griffey Jr. Sure neither veteran owns a World Series ring yet they will be able to boast when the reach 600 career homeruns. They will move up the all-time list past legends such as Mickey Mantle, Mike Schmidt, and Lou Gehrig. They're both have kind a season. Sosa returned to his old team, the Texas Rangers who were one of the few teams willing to take a chance on him the off season.

At the moment the Reds and Rangers are scuffling a bit in their respective divisions. By the All-Star break both teams will be lucky to be close to .500 or make a small dent in the standings. Ken Griffey Jr. is also nearing another career mark as the only player ever to hit all homers in all MLB ballparks.

Rumors claim the Reds are completing trading Griffey to gain more sharp pitching in the rotation. Although they need the pitching I don't think it would be a wise move. His presence alone in the lineup is a big advantage for the club. Who knows what records or highlights Griffey and Sosa will attain at the season's end?

Cavs give valigant effort in Finals, Spurs too strong to handle

What a disappointing season ending for the Cleveland Cavaliers! They gave the Spurs everything they had, but it was San Antonio veteran depth and power which propeled to a 4-0 series sweep. They captured their 4th NBA title since 1995. Tim Duncan and Tony Parker played a big part in their success. Give credit was it is due to Lebron James and the Cavs. They fought and scraped for loose balls and play real good D. Unfortunately, their Western conference opponents outscored them and had a faster lineup which got to the hoop often and executed plays.

I thought Cleveland would win at least 2 games in the Finals. Game 2 and 3 was theirs for the taking. They were unable to knock down shots late which sealed their fate. Lebron James in Gam4 last night had a good game with 25 points, 6 assists, and 8 rebounds. The rest of the team accounted for 57 points. Rookie Daniel Gibson and center Zydrunas Ilgauskas didn't have big games or score enough to give the Cavs any kind of edge.

Larry Hughes was hurt so of course he was non-factor. Tim Duncan and Tony Parker both had 20-plus points a piece. The Spurs' defense during crunch time made the difference. Still Cleveland had a great year! Better luck next season Cavs.

Cavaliers face elimination, last game this season for Lebron?

The Cleveland Cavaliers find themselves in a deep hole, down 3-0 in the Finals against the Spurs. Game 2 and 3 really could've gone either way. Unfortunately, for Cleveland shots late in the games didn't fall and too much focus on put on Lebron James. His teammates always expect him to make big plays in the clutch, but when he's double and triple-teamed what can he possible do besides try to find the open man? In the Detroit series this team played off a lot of energy from the crowd and stifled their opponents with hard-nosed defense.

I don't remember if any NBA team in history has ever came back when trailing 3-0 and the way Tim Duncan and Tony Parker are playing the Cavs will lucky if they can keep the duo under 40 points tonight at Quicken Loans Arena. Big Z and Daniel Gibson's scoring efforts are necessary if the Cavs are to win today. Sure Lebron could drop 50, but that may not be enough to prevail over San Antonio. It was a low scoring affair in Game 3. I expect another similar game tonight.
It's been a great year for the Cavs franchise despite the eventual outcome of the Finals.

BALCO investigation allegely nearing a close...well it's about time!

After a couple years filled with off and on interrogations which allowed MLB to still showcase some of today's brightest star players word is going around that the steroid investigation is on the verge of being wrapped up. How could this be with the never ending wishy-washy alibis and lame excuses for cases involving performance enhancing drugs? Jason Giambi has already felt pressure as he admitted to doing something wrong yet didn't make it clear what he did. Cheating will always exist in sports so why don't these buffon players just clear the air and tell the truth for once. They're so worried about their precious careers being in jeopardy like it really matters when they're in the mid-to-late 30s.

All eyes are on Barry Bonds, more so because he's less than 10 homeruns away from breaking Hank Aaron's all-time homerun record. This year the veteran Giants slugger is having trouble playing in the outfield. His weight gain obviously has effected his speed in trying to chase down fly balls and jump due to back soreness. Well, I think Barry was right when he claimed to a grand jury that his trainer supplied him with arthritis balm (for all I know he could have used to it rub all over his ass). The notion of Bonds having little or no feeling is in hands or lower extremities is believable, but I can't see investigators overlooking how illegal drugs came into the picture.

If Bonds is found to be guilty on two counts, which includes perjury when he testified in court then the homerun record celebration may be short-lived. I can't believe how long this steroids case has dragged on without concrete evidence being presented. The government needs to end the whole thing soon because MLB already has enough issues with pitchers beaning batters, teammates fighting in clubhouses, lack of sportsmanship, and mascots being thrown into the mix. I don't see how the integrity of the game will be intact if and when these probed athletes are found guilty especially after the fact records are broken. Bud Selig will still sit back and reap billions of dollars.

Too many critics too soon ruling out Cavs

Just because the Cleveland Cavaliers lost the Game 1 of the Finals everyone is automatically assuming the Spurs have another NBA title in the bag. Oh come on! Give the this young team some credit here. They just won 4 straight against the veteran experienced-savvy Detroit Pistons, who are former Eastern conference champs. All this pressure is on Lebron James as skeptics believe it will take a miracle for his team to succeed. That's bologna because it was obvious in the previous playoff series it was indeed a team effort. Daniel Gibson's 31 points in Game 6 against Detroit is true indicator of that.

Scoring 50-point every game is unlikely for any superstar player (Michael Jordan couldn't even pull such scoring performances off all the time). People tend to forget King James is not only a great scorer, but a unrated passer with excellent court vision while adding speed and size to draw double teams, allowing for opportunities for the open man. His ability to drive to the basket often, draw contact either scoring or kicking it to a teammate will be his most valuable asset in the Finals. Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili will no doubt make their share of spectacular plays, but none of them can't deny Lebron of impeccable timing of clutch moves late in games.

I know for the majority most basketball fans look at the Spurs' depth, scoring weapons, and experience as see these factors as unbreakable barriers for Cleveland. How can Lebron and company match up with such an overpowering team? Well, it sure helps to have a former Spurs coaching assistant on the sidelines. Mike Brown knows the ins and outs of the San Antonio game plans and their strategies. He could be a bigger key figure for the Cavs than Lebron! Who knows what the series will look like after the 2 games in Cleveland. For one thing is for sure, King James will be put on a show and make history in the 2007 NBA Finals. Make the critics eat their words, go Cavs!!

MLB managers' sheningans and tirades

The baseball world was hit with a flurry of manager outbursts, all leading to ejections. Forget about the game, these unexpected tirades are just what baseball needed to drive up the entertainment value. When fans watch their favorite teams struggle and go hitless or get slaughtered at least they can rest assure that their beloved team managers will fight for what's right. If that means sprinting on the field, kicking dirt on umpires, tossing hats and bases while furiously stomping up and down the field and yelling obscenities to get their point across then so be it.

I can't get enough of the footage from the Braves minor league team in Mississippi (AA) where the coach just lost it...and everyone thinks MLB has problems! Sports in general seem like they're getting out of control. Sportsmanship has gone out the window. Just wait until the mascots start getting involved in these fiascoes. Hats, bats, and head pieces will really start flying then. That's when the DL will not only be reserved for players.

This past weekend in MLB was awful for fines and suspensions. The following managers got ejected: Cubs- Lou Piniella, Yankees- Joe Torre, Tigers- Jim Leyland, Indians- Grady Little and Reds- Jerry Narron. The minor league coach for the Braves made all the pro managers' acts look like nothing. I think the players got a kick of seeing this type of hot-blooded emotion as footage shows them smiling and laughing. I don't know if more of these outbursts are in store for the season, but it sure can make a night at the ball park entertaining instead of watching a scuffling team.

Spurs clinch NBA Finals!

Spurs take care of Jazz in 4 games

It was a historic night for the Spurs on Wednesday as they defeated the Utah Jazz by a 109-84 blowout at San Antonio. They wrapped the series 4-1 as Tim Duncan and Tony Parker both scored 21 points. The star point guard also dished out 5 assists and snagged 5 boards. I knew the Spurs will take the series, but I thought it would be pushed to at least 6 games. San Antonio was in full control and was destined to advance to the NBA Finals, making this their 4th trip since 1998.

Despite going up short in the Western conference championship the Jazz have a real talented guard in Deron Williams who's on the verge of busting out as one of the NBA's best young stars. He did everything he could to keep his team afloat in the playoffs and showcased great all-around performances against the Golden State Warriors in the second round. This diverse, young team has nothing to be ashamed of since they played with a lot of tenacity and shook things up in the West.

Now the Spurs have time to rest and recuperate awaiting the winner of the Cavs, Pistons series. I know most people are expecting Detroit to win in 6 or 7 games, but I have a feeling Cleveland is go to pull out a shocker. If they win tonight, making it three consecutive wins it's going to be tough to stop them. I agree Lebron James will have to up his scoring output. Then again for them to success it's going to take all-out team effort. Plus they must cut down on turnovers and force the issue with tighter defense. I'd like to see a Spurs vs. Cavaliers match-up in the Finals...Lebron could make history, giving the franchise a championship title they'd yearned for in many years. Kick butt and good luck Cavs!

Lebron and Cavs wrap up win at home, trail in series 2-1

Last night at Quicken Loans Arena it was the Lebron James' show. He took over late and sealed the 88-82 victory for the Cavaliers. It was a tight game the entire 48 minutes of regulation. Cleveland was fortunate to pull out this gut-buster and not be down 3-0 against Detroit. Lebron's teammates made several nice plays on both ends of the court. Rookie guard, Daniel Gibson came up with key defensive stops and interfered with the Pistons' offensive game plans.

Finishing big with 32 points, Lebron was only a rebound and assist away from capturing a triple-double. His slashing drives to the basket combined with his lighting first step were too powerful for Detroit. They couldn't shut down his maneuvers to the hoop so they had no choice but to foul him. The superstar forward played 46 minutes and kept his team in the game from the first half. Big Z and Sasha Pavlovic completed solid secondary performances, combining for 29 points. Ilgauskas snagged 9 boards adding a blocked shot.

It's clear the Cavs have to play aggressive in Game 4 and be relentless on D. Lebron voiced every intention of being the team leader and go-to-guy down the stretch to keep his team alive. Forward Drew Gooden and Donyell Marshall need to get their act together. One has trouble going strong at the basket and the other shoots way too threes! I expect the deficiencies in their games to change soon. Otherwise their playing time will be cut down further. I feel Cleveland can win the next 2 games. They've definitely got the energy and support from the home crowd and that always plays a big factor. Lebron do what you do best....gooooo Cavs!

Yanks' Giambi clears the air about steriod and amphetamines use

Well, look who's being questioned about using illegal performance enhancing drugs again. Jason Giambi is out to set the record straight about past allegations...or at least when his lawyers and agent allow him to speak or advise him to utter more than a yes/no response. His failed amphetamines test has draw much attention as the Yankees first baseman was scheduled to have a meeting in the commissioner's office Wednesday. According to baseball officials Jason has already admitted to using substances to boost his performance. Whether steroids evidence surfaces or not, who knows.

I'd like to see a professional baseball player admit to his wrongs and accept the projected punishment like a man. This way as a person everyone will at least respect him. Too many other superstars' careers lay in the shadows of controversy and secrecy. Obviously, not all players will admit to breaking the rules or cheating. The best thing MLB can do is acknowledge these lingering problems, investigate as they've continued to do, take corrective action, and don't allow franchises to reward those who cheat with hefty salaries or bonuses.

If this case with Giambi is handled carefully and a suspension is upheld maybe other Major Leaguers will have the courage to come forth and announce illegal drug use...then again FAT chance of that happening! Besides it's about time rich owners like George Steinbreiner stop pampering and spoiling their players. (Also, what's with this lousy cheapskate only donating $1 million to Virginia Tech?) I have a feeling anyway, a few salaries on the roster will drop after this season. This summer I don't want to hear about any freak accidents involving syringes during games or cases involving corked bats or touched up baseballs. Let the Great American Past time be clean and live on in all it's glory!

NBA Playoff Atmosphere: what to expect in both conference series

What emotion and excitement the NBA's elite have displayed in the playoffs. The Suns, Spurs series got intense and somewhat gruesome when Steve Nash's got hit and his nose started bleeding. The Goldens State, Utah series had it's moments, although I found it short-lived and disappointing (maybe next year Warriors...remember you upset the Mavs, what other motivation to succeed can exist?)

The Bulls vs. Pistons matchup could have gone either way. In my view Chicago didn't have enough experienced veterans to lead the charge. Gordon and Hinrich's scoring wasn't near enough for their survival. With the Eastern and Western Conference championship series underway history is on the verge on being made. I believe with right amount of pressure and energy on offense the Cavs can pull out the stops and shock Detroit. Lebron James when in the zone is unstoppable! He's got the quickest step, best ball control, and versatility of any forward in the NBA.

I'm pulling for Cleveland to take the series in 7 games. The veterans, Larry Hughes, Eric Snow and Zydrunas Ilgauskas will have to step their game up a notch and deliver with big plays. The big man is averaging 14 ppg, slightly better than his season average. Hughes has fined-tuned a couple 20-plus point efforts, leading to Cavalier wins. He needs to just keep this up. The veteran point guard, Snow averages 4 steals for the season, but his defensive skills will be most handy in this upcoming series starting tonight. Lebron James will draw many double and triple teams from the Pistons and his court vision with his ability to find the open man will be his greatest strength.

In the West the young Utah Jazz took the competition by surprise. Now they have their hands full with Spurs. Tim Duncan and Tony Parker will be the key players in the series. If they don't produce or execute the team will have to rely more on the bench, consisting of guys like Michael Finley and Robert Horry. The Jazz can match their opponent's range of offensive firepower, but can hold them on the boards I think. With Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur in the middle that's possible. In the end I feel though San Antonio will prevail as the better team and win the series in 6 games. For one, Utah hasn't won at San Antonio since 1989 and the Spurs have too good of a defensive lineup. Good luck to all 4 Playoff Final hopefuls as the basketball action continues to heat up.

MLB scores rundown

Wednesday's MLB action showed the White Sox getting the best of the struggling Yankees, winning 3-5 in one game of a doubleheader. New York then bounced back in Game 2 to gain a 8-1 victory. Abreu, Posado, and Melky Cabrera hit homers for the Yanks as the Sox's John Danks collected his second win behind Paul Konerko's homerun and the lineup's 9 hits. Minnesota suffered a 7-1 loss to Cleveland as C.C. Sabathia moved to 6-1 as Trot Nixon drove in 3 runs.

In the NL the Nats brushed off the Braves 6-4. Ryan Zimmerman launched his 3rd homerun of the season. Cole Hamels lead the Phillies over the Brewers 6-2, going deep in the game and recording 11 strikeouts. Aaron Rowand (6) and J.J. Hardy (13) homered. The Marlins pushed past the Pirates 4-3. Florida improves to 18-22 and were aided in the win from big doubles from Miguel Cabrera and Willingham. The Cubs had no answers for the Mets as they fell 8-1 at Shea in good pitcher performance from Jorge Sosa (3-0). No one hit for the cycle or hit two grand slams in a game so nothing spectacular happened or out of the ordinary.

Lebron's Cavs inching closer to East Finals

Up 3-1 the Cleveland Cavaliers are a game away from advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals. They haven't accomplished this feat in 15 years. Despite their lead in the series Cleveland can't get cocky or underestimate the potent veteran-oriented New Jersey Nets. Lead by All-Stars, Vince Carter and Jason Kidd they could go on a resurgent run and make a comeback. These guys have no quit in them either and will battle until the final seconds.

Lebron James took over in Game 4 in New Jersey with a 30-point performance, adding 9 rebounds and 7 assists. If not for veteran guard Eric Snow's timely defensive stop on Vince Carter with under 10 seconds left in the game Cleveland may have not squeaked by, 87-85. The game would've most likely went into OT. The Cavs will have the home fans fully behind them when they return for Game 5.

The alternative scoring options in Larry Hughes and Sasha Pavlovic had worked well for the young team. They've must continue to be consistent and relieve Lebron from offensive duties. Staying focused and not trying to relax or get 'soft' is most important for the Cavs. Getting out to an early lead and carrying it through halftime will be a big advantage. They get feed off the energy and emotion from the crowd, which also play a big part too. Go Cavs!

Warriors and Davis create buzz at home, slam Jazz

Baron Davis had the place in an uproar in Game 3 of the Western playoff series after an empathetic, energetic-jolted dunk over Utah's Andrei Kirilenko in a 125-105 finale. Check out the dunk here. From the get-go the Warriors had the game in the palm of their hand. It was pretty much a must win for GS. The small lineup wreaked havoc on the visitors, who felt pressure all night and couldn't match Golden State's speed and intensity. They broke over 90 points by the end of the 3rd quarter...wow!

Much of the attention Friday night was on Baron Davis who made acrobatic play after play at the basket. The star point guard clearly had fun despite picking up a technical and finished with 32 points, 9 assists, 6 steals, and 4 rebounds. He gave his team breathing move, helping position the series at 2-1. Winning 3 games will a daunting challenge, although I know this GS team is more than capable.

Jason Richardson complimented his teammate, scoring 25 points and providing a major boost late. Al Harrington also played well with 15 points while coming up with big defensive plays at crucial moments. The series is only starting to heat up and I can't wait for BD to explode for over 40 points and dazzle the crowd once again. The series may go to 7 games. My money is on GS!

Yankees concerned about players getting too drunk in clubhouse

Everyone is wondering why the New York Yankees are off to such a sluggish start and playing unlike the usual League's Elite. The esteemed organization has placed a ban on booze in the Yankees' and visitors clubhouse. Wow, this franchise is now blaming alcohol for their insufficient play on the field. Gee, I wonder how long the prohibition will last? This comes at a time when Roger Clemens returns to his old team. Somehow the 44-year-old will get blamed for a random incident behind closed doors such as allegedly supplying his teammates with horse pills and ecstasy mixed together in tequila shots.

Distractions like this are only going to cause the Yankees more problems and effect their play. One night A-Rod comes out swinging hard at the plate and the next game he stumbles on his way to the plate then topples to the ground. The sames goes for Derek Jeter too. On a sure double play the shortstop will pause then proceed to throw the baseball a good 50 feet from second base. Who knows what guys like Jason Giambi might do...go on a rampage, throwing crap everything after a heated exchange between the home plate umpire after a called strike 3.

At current New York is 14-16, only 1 game ahead of the Devil Rays. Tonight they face the Rangers at Yankee Stadium. The beer will only be flowing in the stands as I know the unruly fans will let their team from the Bronx hear it if they fail to produce. I can only imagine the trash talk which will ensue as well as the off-color signs in attendance. Still Roger Clemens should receive a warm reception...well until the hecklers turn their hostility on the rest of the team.

NBA playoffs recap

So far the first round of the NBA playoffs has shown to shocking. Already the Wizards, Heat, and Lakers are eliminated. I didn't expect for Miami to get sweep 4-0, they're the defending Champs! Everyone wants to know what freaking happened? Well, Wade was not healthy for one and no one else on the team made up for the lack of scoring. The defense wasn't great either except for Alonzo Mourning. The Wizards series was unfortunate and was pretty much predetermined. Without Butler and Arenas it was evident Washington was going to struggle big time. They still put up a fight.

The basketball environment and playoff action are getting tense in the West. Last night the Suns knocked out the Lakers. Kobe obviously couldn't do it alone as his team failed to counter the array of offensive weapons in the Suns lineup. Hey, I pulled for the Lakers, but they were all against tough odds. The most astounding news is how the Golden State Warriors are one game away from advancing to the 2nd round. They're up 3-2 on the Mavericks and have really caused the organization and owner Mark Cuban to fret. Too much complaining to refs is going on in this series from both sides.

Baron Davis only continues to look better from each passing game. He's put together a few 30-point, 10-plus assist performance showcases in the series. He proves to be the heart and the soul of this energetic, determined Warriors team. I can't wait to catch part of Game 6. It will be adverse conditions as they Warriors will try to pull out the complete upset in Dallas. Best wishes to them, go get 'em BD and company!

Mets' fan proves to be real idiot with no consideration.

This week a Mets fan was arrested and removed from Shea Stadium for shining a flashlight at Braves' players while sitting behind home plate. Shortstop Edgar Renteria noticed the bright light and informed an umpire during the game. Now the stupid fan has been convicted and sentenced to 15 days in jail. These types of creeps are always looming in sports arena. Could it really be worth jail time and being regarded as a complete jackass to pull a stunt like this? The 40-year-old Brooklyn native responded knew he was wrong and pleaded guilty in court.

Not only will this bozo receive jail time, but is banned from Shea Stadium for 3 YEARS! That's showing him New York! Now all Shea Stadium has to worry about is the usual showering on the field with litter, the random fights breaking out in the stands, fans nearly committing suicide by jumping from the upper deck to catch a foul ball, and the occasional streaker running loose on the field. Looks like the Mets organization has everything under control...or at least for now.

I think this fan who wanted to be a hindrance to the game and players should have his picture displayed on posters around the ballpark, with a banned stamped mark up top which underneaths reads, "If the Mets make it to the World Series within 3 years this scumbag sure as hell won't be invited!" People need to know when enough is enough and not be allowed to give away with this crappy behavior at sporting events. The security who escorted the Brooklyn man was the stadium could have gave him a taste of his own medicine by beaming the high-powered flashlight into his eyes then clocking him over the head with it.

Curt Schilling's blood bet and other shenanigans

Red Sox veteran pitcher, Curt Schilling is out to prove a point to the media and the sports world. This past week rumors swirled about whether Schilling's sock in the 2004 ALCS had blood on it or not. Certain news sources are convinced it was red paint or dye. How ludricious! Everone knows Curt was injured in that series and pretty much all of the playoffs yet labored to help Boston go on to win the World Series. Playing with sutures in his ankles, showing clearly pain on his face at times, it was obvious WHAT WAS ON HIS SOCK!

Now he has bet the media $1 million for anyone who can bet prove the substance on his sock wasn't blood. I think he should defend himself and has a right to be mad about this nonsense. His disgust for the media critics concerning this was posted on his blog. I know some sports reporters are sly, lying weasels who don't always care about the truth, they're just looking for a story which is usually vastly exaggerated. No one will be able to prove the Red Sox starting pitcher wrong. I'm sure he's already made fools out of the media and they will be eating their own words.

Warriors putting the burn to Mavs, Davis in control

If you asked NBA fans earlier in the season if they thought the Golden State Warriors would be undefeated against the Dallas Mavericks in the regular season or even had a slim chance of clinching the playoffs they'd probably say 'no'. Well, in the NBA playoffs the unthinkable occurs. After the huge Game 1 upset at Dallas, Baron Davis and his Warriors are putting the heat on the Western conference contenders. Most everyone has the Mavs as the favorites to emerge into the league championship series then go on to play in the Finals.

The game got completely away from them Sunday night and Dirk nor Howard and Terry could ignite a comeback. Again, as with the final stretch of the season, Baron Davis was phenomenal. He damn near completed a triple-double, serving up 33 points, 15 rebounds, and 8 assists. What's not to like about this guy? He's the man! The critics who voted GS out early should reconsider their judgment...wait and see what happens.

Coach Don Nelson's strategy is working thus far against his former team. I'd like to see him keep up the creative game plans and shock the basketball world if the Warriors can indeed pull off a stunning upset. They're up 1-0, will play one more game at Dallas before heading home for 2. The young squad, full of leapers thrives off energy plays and feeds off the home crowd's reaction. Keep doing what works, GS and good things will happen!

Yankees, Red Sox 2007 showdown

Tonight at 8 p.m. ET the Red Sox and Yankees will hook up for Game 3 of their first classic series of the season. Boston goes for the sweep, a rare occurrence with their AL rivals. After the blown saved last night by Mariano Rivera Fenway Park will no doubt be rocking as the home crowd's beloved Bo Sox must have a high level of confidence coming into the game. David Ortiz will be ready to bust out the big bat and slug a few homers. With that short wall in right field it's very possible if he pulls the ball.

The real hot hitter in this series and all of baseball is of course Alex Rodriguez. He has 8 homeruns in his 11 or 12 games, which is astounding. Like him or not he's hitting the stitches off the ball! Boston won the first game of the series then followed with a 7-5 victory Saturday. Ortiz smashed a 2-run shot and went 2-for-5 with 4 RBIs yesterday. He leads the team with 13 runs scored, 17 RBIs, and 6 homeruns. Josh Beckett recorded another win, pitching 6 innings. He's now 4-0 behind solid run support from the lineup.

The series finale tonight at Fenway Park should be another close game. With a win the Red Sox can move to 12-5 before Toronto comes to town for a 2-game series. After the homestand is over they'll travel to Baltimore than see the Yankees again. I'm sure the Boston fans will heckle and catcall A-Rod the entire game and the noise will only intensify when he strides to the plate. I'm pulling for Boston. Can't wait to catch some of the action!

NBA playoff match-ups: My picks and predictions

It's official the NBA playoff first round match-ups are in line. Last night as I had hoped for the Golden Warriors clinched the final seed in the West after defeating the Portland Trail Blazers with relative ease, 120-98. Baron Davis dropped a triple-double (12 points, 10 rebounds, and 14 assists) and was a pivotal player in the Warriors run for the postseason. This will mark the first time since 1997 that the franchise has entered the postseason. Way to go Golden State! Unfortunately, they will face the Mavs in the first round. Even though I know that don't have much of a chance I'm pulling for GS.

Also featured starting this weekend will be the Rockets vs. Jazz, which should be a very entertaining, close series. Yao will battle Okur as McGrady counters Kirilenko. I pick the Rockets to win in 7 games. They've got a stronger bench with Mutombo and Juan Howard. The other series in the West are the Lakers vs. Suns and Spurs vs. Nuggets. I realize the Suns have one of the best, running offenses in the league, but I going with the Lakers in 7 games. Kobe can pretty much control any game and enable Los Angeles to make big comebacks. Plus it doesn't hurt they have a lanky, talented veteran in Lamar Odom and a potentially dominating center in Andrew Bynum. We'll see if that's enough. As far as the Spurs-Nuggets the series is going to San Antonio in 5 or 6 games. They have too many weapons and are too good of a defensive team for the Nuggets to withstand.

In the East, I'm confident that the Cavs will knock out the Wizards again. Without Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler it's going to be next to impossible to survive. I think Cleveland will advance on in 5 games. The other match-ups are the Nets vs. Raptors, Heat vs. Bulls, and Magic vs. Pistons. Although, they're the underdogs I believe the Raptors will upset the Nets in 7 games. Toronto is the surprise team of the year and are way underrated. Their young, energetic lineup may wear out the older, tired Nets. Hey, I'm a Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson fan, but I don't think they know who they're up against and may tend to take games for granted.

The Magic and Pistons will be an interesting series because both teams to me are toss-ups. Yes, the Pistons are former NBA champs, but are known for slacking off and making bold promises they can't keep. I like Orlando because of their diverse talent, but I'm going with Detroit in 6 games. They play smart basketball and are filled with veteran, top-caliber players. The most anticipated series in the East, the Heat and Bulls also should be close. I expect a few nail-biters because either team can explode and play up-tempo, high energy basketball on any given night and do the unexpected. Looking over the lineups and benches I feel Miami will knock off their opponents in 6 games. Wade and Shaq will find a way to deliver in the clutch and lead their team to the second round in search of a second consecutive title.

Golden State pushing hard to claim final playoff seed

The NBA playoffs are almost here. Only one final seed remains as the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers are battling for it. The two teams within a game of each other. Both are having a resurgence second half. They've both got a good mix of talent. Coming into today's game The Warriors are 40-40 while the Clippers hold a 42-40 record, a slight edge over their competition.

With New Orleans out of the picture as they fell too far behind in the West, the focus is on only the two contending teams. The Clipppers have a veteran squad with plenty of experience and talent which include Elton Brand, Sam Cassell, and Corey Maggette. Their competition has a new look with mid-season acquisitions, Al Harrington and Stephen Jackson. It will all come down to which team is the most hungry. Personally, I'm pulling for the Warriors because I'm a big BD fan and they deserve to make the postseason.

Either team won't have an easy matchup in the first round whether they face the Mavs, Spurs, or Suns. Last year the Clippers forced a Game 7 against Phoenix, but that was without Amare Stoudmaire. It's sure to be a fight to the finish. Whoever prevails will be the real underdogs going into the postseason...and have their work cut out for them.

Weasely Sports agent busted for smuggling foreign ball players into U.S.

Well, it's about time some doofus was caught for harboring illegal aliens in the U.S. Unfortunately, for one potential baseball team they will now be out of a crop of foreign baseball players. Sports agent, Gus Dominguez was found guilty in a California court of smuggling 5 Cuban baseball players into the country and then tried to deny he did anything wrong. According to reports this guy dropped the foreign athletes off in the Florida Keys. Later the Sports agent had them transported to California. This crap has gone on for years and now people are just starting to take notice?

For his trouble, Dominguez faces up to 5 years in prison for the conviction and up to 10 years each for 20 other smuggling convictions. The 48-year-old agent has created quite a legal mess for himself. These illegal foreigners must be mad after finding out because they're out of a contract and most likely will be deported back home. Then again, this is America and a lot of crap falls through the cracks all the time. I don't expect the government to take any action on the matter (The Bush Administration hasn't done squat in the last 7 years).

If anything this case helps MLB. At least there will a few less Joses or Juans in the dugouts and on the field so the coaches won't get so confused. Let's face it, Mexico and Cuba has such an abundance of these guys that they could load up several team rosters. The effect could be disastrous when in the middle of a game, an emergency occurs such as pieces of the stadium's roof start to crumple without the players realizing it and none of them can speak a word of English. They'd be screwed! The umpires could only point to the rafters as they scamper off the field. MLB can survive without a few less foreign ball players who are smuggled on a plane or crammed into the trunk of a car.

Durant, Florida Gator standouts heading for NBA

College hoops fans knew it was coming sooner or later. After repeating for the National title, pro scouts were determined to recruit the Gators' Joakim Noah, Corey Brewer, Al Horford, and Ron Lewis. The Boston Celtics showed their immediate interest in the freshman, Kevin Durant by hounding him and his family with relentless phone calls to home. For their attempts the NBA fined the franchise $50,000. After a long anticipated wait the Texas Longhorns' star made his decision: he declared his entry into the Draft.

I have to admit even though I haven't watch these guys play much they are extremely gifted on the court and can only get better over time. It's good that Noah and Horford waited at least until the end of their junior years. I suppose they feel they have no more to accomplish at the college level since winning back-to-back National titles (who can blame them really?) I'm surprised that Ohio State's Greg Oden hasn't made any news concerning the Draft. If he stays put he will still be one of the best low-post players in the country and make OSU a threat in the tournament again.

All of these young athletes entering the Draft are foregoing their college education for now and have thought over all the possible options. They can always go back later if they so choose to after embarking on a pro career. I wish them all the best in the future because they're a talented group that will no doubt showcase their skills on the biggest stage of them all.

Wade returns to Miami while teammate gets arrested

The Miami Heat are sure glad to have Dwayne Wade back. His return on Sunday showed him in limited action on the court. His presence wasn't enough for the Heat to overcome the Charlotte Bobcats as they lost in overtime, 111-103. Just when good things happen for the Heat they receive bad news of reserve forward, James Posey being arrested for drunken driving. Police pulled him over for stopping his car in the middle of the road in Miami. I guess this is minor disruption for the NBA Champs, who look to have gained a renewed sense of confidence.

Shaq (15 points, 9 rebounds) wasn't a big factor in the game Sunday, but Alonzo Mourning did more than his part by scoring 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the field with 3 blocks. The game was close until it went into OT. Then the Bobcats took control. Gerald Wallace was the difference with 30 points. Wade played 27 minutes (didn't enter the game until the 2nd quarter) and finished with 12 points and 8 assists. The way the playoff picture is shaping up it looks like Miami will face Cleveland in the first round, owning home court advantage. This will make a big difference in the series.

I hope Wade gets his stamina up and progresses with his recovery, however he probably won't be at his best come playoff time. His season scoring average, 28.4 ppg was missed dearly by the Heat and the star who went from playing 40 plus minutes a game may serve as a role as bench scorer to give his team a lift. This team is veteran-savvy from players to coaches so they've got the experience to win, it's only a matter of getting it down.

Arenas kisses season goodbye, no joy in Washington

The Washington Wizards have seen their season, filled with great expectations slip right from under them. Their star guard's knee injury has changed the whole playoff picture for them. He's out 2-3 months, done for the season. This is truly disappointing for the Wizards. Once ahead of the Heat they now find themselves trailing in second in the division as a less favorable seed. Arenas was having another sensational year, averaging around 28 ppg with 6 apg.

No longer are the Wiz without Arenas, but also Caron Butler went on the shelf with a broken bone in his hand this month. Coach Eddie Jordan had made real good progress with this team and now look what happens? Antawn Jamison is the sole veteran leader left to salvage the remainder of the season. His performances alone won't be enough for Washington. Agent Zero as he calls himself, couldn't have caught a worse break. I guess the Wizards will have to count their losses and look forward to 2008...better luck next year.

Mariners' Hernandez, talk of the town in Seattle

Opening Day was bittersweet for me. Although, my favorite team, the Chicago Cubs lost to the Reds in the AL it was all gravy for my second favorites, the Seattle Mariners (always root for). The highlight of Opening Day was 20-year-0ld pitcher Felix Hernandez. He whiffed 12 batters in 8 innings of work as the M's shutout the A's 4-0. Providing the padded lead to insure a victory was Richie Sexson who launched a 3-run shot to center late in the game. I'm happy to see the Mariners move in the right direction to kick off the season.

All anyone talked about yesterday was Felix Hernandez. His performance left no one to question his conditioning efforts in the off-season. He apparently lost 20 pounds, looking leaner while showing great command on his pitches. Piazza and Milton Bradley couldn't catch up to the high heat nor should've bothered trying. The M's still are locked in a tough division, but they face less of a battle against Oakland since Zito is gone.

Seattle made a smart move this off-season with the acquisition of veteran hurler, Jeff Weaver who has playoff experience and won a World Title with the Cardinals last season. His experience will definitely be a major asset to the club as Weaver could play a huge role in the second half for the M's. A lot of faith will be put in the young, ever growing pitching prodigy. He will turn 21 in a few weeks and has his best years ahead of him. Wait until he adds another nasty pitch to his repertoire, hitters won't have a chance. Good luck to the M's in 2007!

NCAA championship showdown prediction: No. 1s lock up

Final Four weekend was thrilling as Georgetown, UCLA, Florida, and Ohio State laid it all on the line. It seemed inevitable however that the Gators would make a second consecutive appearance at the National Championship game. Their star lineup outmatched and outplayed the Bruins in route to a 76-66 victory. 4 players for Florida hit in double-digits in scoring while Horford and Noah combined for 28 rebounds. They'll encounter a versatile Ohio State in the title game.

The answer for Ohio State Saturday against Georgetown wasn't Greg Oden, it was a series of efforts from the rest of the team. That's what it will take to knock off the National Champs, which is no easy feat. Florida only lost 5 games all season. Ohio State's 67-60 triumph over Georgetown wasn't real impressive yet without their pressure defense the outcome would probably have been different. Greg Oden got in early foul trouble, sitting out a large chunk of the first half. His 13 points, 9 rebounds performance was a vital contribution in order for OSU to advance to the National Championship.

The significance of the title game is the first time in five years that two no. 1 teams squared off. Each contender has a cast of talent that can step up and take over. Mike Conley Jr. and Ron Lewis will be factors when Oden is on the bench for OSU while Brewer, Noah, Hortford, and Green serve as the key components for Florida. I think the game will come down to their final 30 seconds and whoever goes on the last short run will win. I pick Ohio State because they have more motivation to succeed and conquer the National Champs. Best wishes to the Buckeyes. Whomever prevails, it's going to be a historic, captivating game.

Raptors, Knicks have shot at playoffs.

I can't believe what might actually happen in the NBA. The Eastern conference is ugly, leaving the door open for many unexpected teams to grab the final spots for the postseason. For a team a year ago that was the laughing stock of the league now has a chance to enter the postseason. Madison Square Garden can have a good reason to cause a raucous beyond the usual all-out brawls and showering of trash thrown on the court from vengeful hecklers. If Isiah Thomas can pull this feat off he will save his job, which looked to be in jeopardy for a while.

Okay to get an idea of how bad the East is the Knicks are 31-40, still able to hang around. In the West that wouldn't cut it. The season would be over already. The Celtics and 76ers have shown no consistency, unable to go on any decent winning streak. As far as other unlikely competition the Raptors have emerged at the top of the Atlantic division. They're coming off a huge win (or at least I think so) against the Heat Wednesday night, 96-83. Chris Bosh has become a leader on the team. He finished the game with 13 points and 18 rebounds. Guard Anthony Parker added 20 points.

How about the Raptors, they're 39-32! Sure that's not a great record, but considering the contenders they've played and actually beaten the Cavs, Rockets, and the Heat. It should be enough to help the franchise make their first playoff appearance. Toronto has an overlooked, talented group featuring sweet-shooting guards, T.J. Ford, Anthony Parker, and Juan Dixon. These guys are making the difference, each deadly shooters from beyond the arc.

They deserve to make the playoffs because they're come a long way since their expansion year. Toronto faces Washington on the road Friday. With a second consecutive win they put further distance between them and other Eastern challengers in the race. In the Knicks, on the other hand will have to hope and pray for a miracle!

The Hornets quest for playoff emergence rests in Chris Paul's hands

With the season winding down the playoff picture is taking shape. The battle in the East for the final spots are ugly, the door has been open for so long with no team being able to capitalize. In the West it's a close race between the Warriors, Hornets, T-wolves, and Kings. Each team is within 2 games of each other. The Hornets (32-38) and Golden State (33-39) are tied for the final seed. Lead by their smooth-passing star point guard, Chris Paul, New Orleans/Oklahoma City could be celebrating their first playoff birth.

Coming off a big win over the Rockets the other night, things look to be in the Hornets' favor. Both Paul and Tyson Chandler are having stellar performances. The second-year star guard is averaging 17 ppg with 9 assists. Sunday against Houston Paul scored 28 (10-15 FG) with 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. For a guard he shoots 45% on field goals for the season, which is good for any player in the league. Tyson Chandler has put together remarkable rebounding games in the last week or two. Victories against Boston and Memphis he pulled down 11 rebounds in each game while adding at least 14 points. In a loss at Los Angeles the 7'1 Center had a huge game with 22 points and 22 rebounds (9 offensive).

The big drawback for the Hornets is not having Peja Stojakovic in the lineup. He may return from his near season-long injury to give them a scoring lift. That's why I think Chris Paul will set up to the challenge as it's his time to shine. He can help give the franchise make their debut in the postseason. New Orleans has to withstand the remaining teams in the hunt and get more of a lead going into the last 2 weeks. The speedy, intelligent point guard has got it in him to produce another triple-double and get his team over the hump. Look for those assists totals to rise too with confidence brimming in New Orleans/Oklahoma City

The fight for the Final Four

The tension has risen this weekend as 8 teams compete for the 4 coveted spots in the tournament. Ohio State and UCLA are in with big wins yesterday. Many feel Florida is a shoe-in for the Final Four. Their impressive star trio of Noah, Hortford, and Lewis are tough to shut down. That's why many college hoops fans believe they're favorite to make good on a run for a repeat at the title. I'm sure the bets were riding on them today. It's coming down the wire at this moment as Florida is up 79-74 over Oregon with 33 seconds left. Looks like the Gators are on their way to the Final Four to face UCLA.

In another great match-up set for this afternoon is North Carolina vs. Georgetown. This may be a battle of the bulls with explosive, young talent on both teams. Hansbrough and Hibbert will be the ones to watch as they duke it out in the paint. This will be most grueling game of the season for UNC. Considering the up-tempo play and similar style it will shape up to be back-and-forth, high energy game. Drawing fouls early in the low post will be a big advantage for the Tarheels if they can get Hansbrough the ball often. Most of my picks to advance to the Elite 8 were off and even though I predicted Georgetown would make the Final Four I got to favor my Tarheels (not expecting this match-up in the East Regionals Finals).

I was surprised Kansas was eliminated, they hanged tough until under 2 minutes only to be out played by the Bruins intensity. This has been a great month of college hoops with the amazing upsets outstanding player performances. A 40-point scoring showcase could very well be in the works before the NCAA tournament ends. The question is who dethrone the Champions....or can they triumph in back-to-back seasons? We'll all find out in a few weeks.

Critics already canceling Lebron and others out as MVP

All the talk swirling around the NBA concerning the MVP award is about Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki. Yeah, they've had a good year, but nothing spectacular. Both the Suns and Mavericks will have their way in the first round. The two superstars are doing a little bit of everything to keep their teams as the top-seeds in the West. Nash averages 19 ppg with 11.5 assists whereas Nowitzki is the team scoring leader for the Mavs with 25 ppg. Much of the incredible talent on both teams is overlooked however, deterring from the real reasons why the Western contenders are so strong.

I have a problem with those who are think it's predetermined Lebron James won't win MVP. Just because the Cavaliers don't have the best record in the East doesn't mean jack squat regarding an individual player award. He's damn near single-handedly kept Cleveland near Detroit the whole season in second place and in position to garner a top seed for the playoffs. I have to ask the naysayers, where would the Cavs be without King James? Another name which comes to mind is Kobe Byrant and Tracy McGrady. They have spectucular years too. To be fair here while McGrady has Yao and cast of other stars Kobe has relatively no star duo or trio in Los Angeles to compliment him (with the exception of Lamar Odom).

These NBA leaders deserve the consideration for the MVP. Out of everyone James is of course the youngest player and that will rule against him despite several remarkable performances. His contribution to Cleveland is unmeasurable because he can do so many intangibles on the court. I don't want to see Nash win the award again because he has so many scorers around to bale him out in clutch moments. He can drain big shots, no doubt about that though he's not a dominator on the court nor can solely resurrect his team by trailing by a wide margin (normally doesn't have to, yes I know). Guys like Lebron and Kobe shouldn't be overlooked too soon they may surprise everyone in the postseason.

Celtics in hot pursuit of Durant

Texas standout, Kevin Durant has generated an tremendous amount of attention this year. His team may be out of the NCAA tournament, but this doesn't mean recruits have let up on pursuing him. This week the Boston Celtics got themselves into trouble by repeatedly contacting the Durant family, hoping to lure in the phenomenal freshman with a tempting contract offer. For their effort Boston was fined $30,000. Here the NBA goes again...when will they learn that petty slaps on the wrists do nothing?

Every time an incident like this occurs they take the easy way out of handling it. Commissioner Stern isn't firm enough with his policies. I think taking it a step further by dropping endorsement deals and sponsors for teams is necessary. They need to lose commercial appeal and create an image which is directed more towards encouraging college education rather than a pro career coupled with extravagant salaries. College athletes are well aware of the perks extended when signing with a pro team.

I don't think Kevin Durant will benefit by leaving college after 1 year to play in the NBA. He's not going to have enough experience despite his enormous talent. Plus, obtaining a degree will most likely give him a second career option. Having this other option to fall back on is smart. Sure it would be great for him to get an endorsement from Nike yet it won't make a better basketball player. The Celtics might as well stop pressuring him to make a decision and let him alone. I believe any NBA team which bugs the crap out of young, raw college talent should be admonished and lose top draft picks.

Boozer's return to Cleveland won't be welcomed.

Finally after walking away from Cavalier fans almost 3 years ago Carlos Boozer will return to Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. Forget about any supportive signs from fans in the crowd. He'll be lucky to maintain his concentration due to the echo of boos throughout the game. The Jazz have their best record in years in part to Boozer and from a string of young rising stars. They're going to be in for a fight Saturday night and since it's St. Patrick's Day the Cleveland crowd will be rowdy more than usual (especially after downing beer after beer).

Lebron James said that his ex-Cavs' teammate will be in for a terrible night. I have a feeling he's right because I can't imagine anyone in the building going easy on Carlos. The Jazz are 43-22 in first place ahead of Denver. The Cavs (40-25) trail the Pistons by 1.5 games in the Central and are coming off their sixth straight win against the Grizzlies. Recently, Hughes, Gooden, and Ilgauskas have upped their scoring performances to enable this poised run for Cleveland. Plus Sasha Pavlovic's efforts off the bench have added another scoring threat. The shooting guard dropped 25 points on the Kings on Tuesday.

It would be great to see the Cavs go on a 15-game win streak and gain ground over Detroit while finishing the seasons as one of the top seeds in the East. Nothing has kept Lebron down either. Aches and strains aren't enough to stop him from playing. He's only sit out a couple games so far. If he ignites Cleveland faithful, busting out for 50-plus points then Booz-clues will indeed have a wretched night...one he'll never forget I'm sure. Any type of distraction for this homecoming will be to the Cavs' favor. The trick is to get the bald-headed turncoat frustrated and irritated early. The starting lineup or just Lebron can then put on a one hell of a show.

NCAA tournament picks today

The NCAA action resumes today with some top seeded teams taking the court. None of the underdogs have it easy yet big upsets in the first round are always possible. Here is a listing for all the games, NCAA tournament scoreboard. I think UNC has the most favorable opponent in East Kentucky because the depth off the bench and all-around quality talent for North Carolina. Of course the Tarheels are my favorite team and I'd like to see them at least make it to the Final Four.

Duke also plays tonight against VCU, which definitely looks to be an easy contest for the Blue Devils, who are a #6 facing a #11. The lineup is too strong with McRoberts and Scheyer as the two top scorers for VCU to handle. I don't think they disrupt the Duke game strategy. Besides Coach K wouldn't allow such a travesty to happen, he'd never heard the end of it either.

Texas Tech squares off in a fairly equal match-up with Boston College. If anyone heard Bobby Knight's comments yesterday in a press conference then you know how anxious and fired up he is due to the uncertainty of his team's performance. I think this game will be close up until 5 minutes to go and then one player will take over. BC has 3 scoring threats and change the course of the game. The central figure here is Jared Dudley. He's expected to deliver with clutch plays and ignite a rally. I pick Boston College over the Long Horns by a 3-6 point margin.

In other contests, Michigan State takes on Marquette whereas Gonzaga tangles with Indiana. Last season MSU was a surprise team in the tournament, pulling off a few upsets and doing damage in the Sweet Sixteen. Though they may have a bigger lineup than Marquette I'm going to cancel them out for the contest. I figure their pressure defense late will make up for their inability to drain enough three-pointers. Forcing enough turnovers will definitely give them a chance and keep them within striking distance. I'll go with Gonzaga in the other match-up. Their strength from the inside and outside scoring, with Heytvelt averaging 16 ppg along with 7 rpg I feel will be too overpowering for Indiana. The Zags finished with a 23-10 record and 11-3 in the Western conference.

Since I'm an ACC fan Maryland was my favorite over Davidson (the game is nearing a close). D J Strawberry and Mike Jones have the shooting touch plus this squad has dependable scorers off the bench as well to give them a lift. The last two games of really any significance are Belmont vs. no. 2 Georgetown and no. 6 Louisville vs. no. 11 Stanford. I don't know much about these teams because I don't stay in tune with their conferences, but it's a no-brainer Georgetown will be victorious. They've got too many weapons both offensively and defensively. As far as the second game, it's a toss-up. Both teams are tough to beat, but due to a better rank I pick Louisville. Today's games are a beginning showcase for the tourney as March Madness action will be sizzling in the coming weeks.

Davis and Warriors stick it to Mavs

Baron Davis' return to the Warriors lineup since his injury has already had a dramatic effect on the team's morale and energy level. His presence at the point, running the show proved so as Golden State crumpled a 17-game win streak by overtaking the Mavericks 117-100 last night. With the win the Warriors claim a 30-36 record. 4 players in the starting lineup scored 16 points a piece and Mickael Pietrus had 20 off the bench. Setting the tone was Davis, who dished out 7 assists with 9 points which is below his average. He helped his team pull away in the 4th quarter where they took full control.

The Mavericks struggled on offense, unable to get in any kind of rhythm. Dirk Nowitzki shot 3-for-11 from the field with 13 points. No one got hot for Dallas and simply didn't hit big shots late. They shot 42% on FGs in the game and couldn't shut down the energetic push Golden State executed. With the loss still it won't hurt the Mavs, owning a comfortable 8-game lead over the Spurs in the Southwest division. Their momentum is slightly slowed down, but it looks as if they'll finish at the top in the West.

I know Baron Davis played just 23 minutes Monday night and didn't have a magnificent performance on the offensive end, that doesn't mean he doesn't have a huge impact on his teammates. His role is to get them involved as often as possible, sometimes deliver in the clutch. In actuality he thrives at making his teammates better players when he flies down the lane off the dribble and kicks it to open guys for high-percentage shots. My hat is off to Davis because everyone thinks he can't make a difference or help position Golden State for a final playoff spot. For the critics out there just wait and see what happens within the last 3 weeks of the season...BD will be bringing his A game, no doubt about it.

Out of sure will Shaq has emerged as a monster scorer again. He exploded on the Timberwolves Friday with 32-point empathic scoring showcase in route to a 105-91 victory . No one will stand in his way for his quest for another title. The Diesel has took control after sidelined teammate Dwayne Wade went down with a major shoulder injury. I still think Miami is a force inside on any given night with veterans, Shaq and Zo roaming the court. When Shaq can hit 13-of-16 from the field like he did against Minnesota then teams are in big trouble.

The Heat have won 5 consecutive games and their last 11 games at home. They have the Wizards in the sights and are scheduled to face them on Sunday. No one ought to count the Heat out because if Shaq decides to get serious he may go on a thunderous offensive tangent and help his team go on a long spirited win streak. With Jason Williams and Eddie Jones very much a factor, doing the intangibles on both ends of the court, the Heat won't collapse. I have a feeling several of the NBA's top centers and forwards will be leaving arenas after games with aches and pains all over their body.
