Authentic game-worn sweat on Ruth hat a big seller

I knew eventually there was going to be something else crazy spur from old Yankee Stadium. Vintage memorabilia as always is a hot seller just check out Ebay and find out. Usually fans are in the market for signed bats, baseballs, or cards. However, this week a Babe Ruth sweat-stained Yankees' cap sold for $328,000. How ridiculious is that! The vintage piece of memorabilia featured the slugger's initials embroided on the bottom of the hat's bill. Hunt Auctions claims it's the first hat worn by a player in a game to fetch more than $100,000. Whomever purchased the hat I hope at least got a few loose hair strands, dirt and/or mustard stains from a hot dog as well for that kind of money.

Such a sweat soaked item isn't the type of collector's gem best suited to be placed on a mantel, but rather an enclosed case so the odor can at least be trapped for safe keeping. I imagine the cap is real faded now with traces of his DNA still on it. If a pair of Ruth's pants were auctioned off and had a big hole in the kroch with fart stains investors would be lined up in legions to cast their bid on such an obscure historical remnant. I wonder what an empty coca-cola bottle signed by the Babe would go for in an auction. All this obsession with Babe Ruth memorabilia kind of leaves other Yankee Legends out of the fold. Why can't someone discover a half pair of salvaged cleats worn by Mickey Mantle in his last season, a coffee-stained silk garment Joe Dimaggio gave Marilyn Monroe, a chipped face mask used by Yogi Berra, or a piece of the dugout bench with a drop on hair tonic from Lou's Gehrig's head in his 2,130th career game?

Such rarities sure draw national audience and unbelievable prices. I'm sure when Yankee Stadium is finally torn down there will several frauds surfacing, lying about how they discovered a Babe Ruth jersey buried under the field, though turns out to a knock off replica piece. That or how an authenitc game-used Roger Maris glove with *61 etched in it miracously is uncovered in the ceiling tile from the locker room. That's when the certification process will weed out the phonies. The investors who snatch up the actual vintage memorabilia usually never sell it. Either it's donated or handed to family generations for sentimental value. Whomever desires a sweaty old baseball cap of one of baseball's greatest players can have it for a couple thousand bucks, I'd say no thanks. Um...no offense Babe.

A-Rod intent on pulling a no-show at Homerun Derby

I don't know why some of my favorite players (or ex-favorites) want to jeopardize their fan base and disappoint me truly by ruining a good time. Forget about those accepting contracts to play on LOSING teams, mindless rappers who don't know when to shut the h-- up about an old feud, or guys voted in to the All-Star Game only to bow out due to a blister on their hand. Then there is Alex Rodriguez, rich and famous baseball icon who is engulfed in championship history at Yankee Stadium. The place I might add...which will host it's last All-Star game. The slugger is about to destroy a child's baseball dream or rather a home crowd in need of a hero by backing out of the Homerun Derby. I didn't think it would ever come to this. A-Rod: there is no quicker, indecent way to unofficially tell the fans to kiss your ass than to pull this stunt.

Let me tell you something buster, I'm sure as hell no Yankees fan, but I WAS a fan of yours. To think you're too high and mighty to make an appearance in your own home ballpark which will cease to exist in a year is despicable. Damn it, I should have known not to trust him once he skipped out of Seattle and shattered hopes and dreams there. Everyone knows A-Rod is the most overpaid player (greedy) in baseball and has acted too much like a spoiled diva rather a gracious sports star. To say the money has gone to his head is an understatement. Man, has he got himself in a pickle with Yankee fans (forget about the heckling and worry about being shot), first this week passing Mickey Mantle on the all-time homerun list and now not making an appearance at the Derby. Geez, what a selfish a-hole!

It's not like the Yankees are on pace to make the playoffs this year either. A-Rod might as well take his 40-plus homeruns and 100-something (nobody cares) runs season and park it somewhere else. Rather than have his head shoved up his own ass the least he could do is show appreciation to the home fans by participating in the classic All-Star festivities. What a way to piss away a memorable night in one of the most historic stadiums! If he dare says later he wasn't able to attend because of family issues, meaning his divorce then he should be whacked across the face and kicked in the groin for failing to come with a better lie than that. I bet he's not too 'busy' though to count his year's salary in a briefcase or go out on the town looking for fun (hookers). Alex has really pissed off the Yankee nation and all of his loyal fan base by ditching them to indulge in his own self-infatuation.

Pat Riley's too casual 'slick' look alone won't cut it as team president

I have to admit there was a time when Pat Riley was one of the NBA's finest head coaches. He candor and motivation among his players were undeniable impressive. That time has passed. After Miami's slumpy, lackluster finish last season Riley hasn't wowed any Heats fans with his lack of intelligent transactions in the off-season. This guy is going to be in some serious hot water if he doesn't find a way to turn around the franchise. Simply loafing on the sidelines during summer league games, relaxed and sipping coffee isn't going to help his chances in keeping his job (Besides, when the hell did he become team President anyway?) If the veteran former championship coach cares at all he'll be keeping an eye out for potential recruits while hoping to God he can pull a mega deal and keep Dwayne Wade happy in Miami.

It's amazing how Pat Riley always gets off the hook (more like saves his own ass) when the pressure is cooking because of his track record and notable credentials. When Stan Van Gudy took over the coaching position for the Heat it was clear he was way in over his head yet smart enough to realize there was no chance for a miracle so he left. Some critics may claim the team had to deal with too many injuries while others directly blame Riley for not pulling the right strings. Simply relying on their top draft pick Michael Beasely to rescue the franchise isn't going to work. A rebuilding process must continue for the Heat to be successful.

Once Pat got in the front office, becoming a department head things went downhill fast. To me he looks too comfortable like's on vacation sporting his slick backed hair and casual slacks. How can the Heat emerge from being a last place team in the East into a contender again when the guy controlling operations always appears to be out to lunch or in need of a martini? Somebody within the organization better intervene in the managerial duties and give Riley a piece of their mind. Otherwise this young Miami Heat team is in for another crappy season.

History in the making: Cubs and Red Sox have 7 All-Stars

The 2008 All-Star game is set to be a historic event at Yankee Stadium. Typically fans vote for their favorite veteran players and talented newcomers who put up impressive numbers. This year the most favor and consideration went to the Cubs and Red Sox. Both teams have seven players a piece selected as All-Stars. Two notable names in particular, Alfonso Soriano and David Ortiz, however are injured. They are both pivotal players in each team's run for the pennant. The best thing for both stars to do is sit out and watch the festivities while cheering on their teammates.

Of the course the players elected had pull as their respective managers will run the show at the All-Star game. This crop of talent from the two teams include: Cubs starters, Kosuke Fukudome, Geovany Soto, and Alfonso Soriano with Carlos Zambrano, Kerry Wood, and Ryan Dempster as reserves while the Red Sox starters are Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, Kevin Youkilis, and Dustin Pedroia with Jason Varitek and Jonathan Papelbon voted in by their peers as reserves. With this many players representing their teams it's shaped up to be a historic, memorable event in New York, which plays host at old Yankee Stadium for the final time.

I'm going to root for the NL to win the All-Star game and actually make a bold prediction that Chipper Jones will be the MVP. The most popular player voted in the upcoming All-Star game is A-Rod who received nearly 4 million votes. Behind him for the second most votes was the Phillies' Chase Utley. With so many new faces as well as the veteran caliber on the field it's going to be a fantastic All-Star game. Can't wait to catch the action!

Indians itching to unload Sabathia to salvage season

It's bad when a team knows they're doomed and out of contention before the All-Star break. Usually I'd mention this team is either the Kansas City Royals or Tampa Bay Devil Rays then promptly take a pot shot at them. In 2008 those teams are off the chomping block as the Cleveland Indians have plummeted into the category. With the trade deadline hanging in the balance the ball club wants to swing a deal for C. C. Sabathia. I'm not sure getting rid of their ace in exchange for a few prospects or quality infielders will make them feel better about having a losing record. Right now they're 37-48, 12 games back in the AL Central which isn't as bad as it seems.

Claiming their season is already over is premature and shows their low level in confidence. If the GM is smart he'll restructure the team around guys like Grady Sizemore, Casey Blake, and Victor Martinez. Several teams are interested in their star pitcher, but will have to extend a greater offer than $72 million for 4 years. Sabathia turned down the proposal from the Indians earlier this year. I think he'd make a nice catch for the D-Rays if they were willing to sign him to a big contract after the season. Most likely, the Yankees and Red Sox will be the highest bidders in hot pursuit. As long as the 28-year-old southpaw stays healthy he'll be a threat to any opposing team.

Baron Davis wants to be a Clipper, if only it was a joke

I'm not sure it's fun to be a basketball fan anymore. Shaq decides to criticize Kobe in a rap song, the Knicks can't come close to obtaining the best draft pick, and now of all players I've admired, Baron Davis is on the verge of joining the Clippers. In my viewpoint, this is a true dark day in basketball. I know BD is mixing it up with the Hollywood types to get a music album or movie produced, but what the hell is he thinking wanting to play for a such lousy team? He had a good thing rolling in Golden State and ruined it. Sure he can bring his 20 ppg and 8 apg over to L.A. and watch as his new team takes a thrashing night after night. I'm talking about a team who once savored the taste of playoff frills a few years back because they knew it wasn't going to happen again for a long time.

From the record low seasons the Clippers got so desperate for wins at one point they promoted nights encouraging fans to bring an extra pair of tennis shoes to the games as they'd get a chance to play if the game became a blowout. The problem was nobody cared with most seats empty in the arena amid a couple of bitter hecklers. I can't fathom it besides the long-term contract Baron Davis is offered why he'd want to be a Clipper. Besides, didn't he like being on a playoff team? I guess he couldn't pass up the 5-year, $65 million contract extended his way.

I can't approve of this decision. Sure, I learned to accept the trade from the Hornets in 2004 and felt it worked out for the best. However, this crummy partnership is a cruel way to back stab Warriors' fans who put so much faith in you. Forget about them rolling out the red carpet, the royal treatment is gone now. Let's just say they're not going to be forgiving when you return to Oakland. The Bay area fans are going to pissed too for not making the playoffs two years in a row.

Instant Replay, a good system to prevent umpires from throwing games

I know there has been talk about reinstating Instant Replay into baseball. Umpires can't be trusted when it comes to calling a close play. In fact sometimes they are intent on speeding the game up as strike zones widen, potential base stealers are cheated, and nail-biting moments are ruined when a curving fly ball is signaled foul when it's actually fair, changing the entire course of a game and screwing one team over royally. Besides that a fair and balanced reinforcement is needed to counter any doubts about a controversial play. The umpires miss the direction of a ball and have to form a meeting on the field and start thinking it causes trouble. Just like in the NBA I'm sure betting goes on amongst some officials and they plan on how to screw hitters at the plate in pivotal game situations.

Sometimes I think it comes down to umpires not being able to see worth a crap and just guessing. Such lousy officiating doesn't fly with fans. As a matter of fact it's one reason to throw trash on the field. Plus all those overweight umpires will benefit from Instant Replay. That way they can save their own butt by not paying attention, looking into the stands or sneaking a candy bar or hamburger out of their pocket during the middle of live action. I'm in favor of Instant Replay. It can help teams pushing for a run late in the season win close games. Plus come playoff time it will enable underdog teams not to get screwed as much on bang-bang plays and less likely have key players getting ejected from guys after calling the home umpire a fat, blind $%&*@! Take it from the game will be much better off.

Altercation with Astros GM not good for clubhouse morale

I don't think certain athletes can ever put personal issues aside and get along with their coaches. The Astros Shawn Chacon really put his baseball career in jeopardy. I understand players get frustrated and angry with teammates and coaches yet a clear thinking person knows when they're going too far. Chacon didn't care about injuring or hospitalizing Astros GM Ed Wade by grabbing him by the neck and throwing him to the ground. I don't see why the Astros will bother keeping the pitcher around or if any of his teammates want him around. I think this incident effects clubhouse morale and creates too much negativity compared to the tussles earlier this year with Red Sox's Manny Ramirez and Kevin Youkilis or the D-Rays pitcher/catcher scrape between Matt Garza and Dioner Navarro.

It's stupid yet kind of amusing when players on crappy teams get mad and fight because they misinterpret a signal. They should be paying closer attention to their coach's direction to avoid swinging on a 2-0 thinking it was a hit-and-run as they hit into an inning ending double play instead of a sacrifice bunt to move a runner into scoring position. The same mishap could happen in a dugout after a batter is steamed, slamming his bat into his intended target the wall yet is rather bounces off a water cooler and hits a teammate in the groin. At that point it's no one about the score, being slaughtered 22-0. Players who have issues with one another need to take it out in the parking lot after everyone leaves if they can work out differences by talking.

I don't see how the Astros will have their spirits uplifted after the altercation Shawn Chacon primarily is responsible for or have any sort of positive impact on the Astros' performance. The best thing to do is fined him then drop him like a bad habit. Nobody needs such crazy behavior like that around in a clubhouse. Since the way the confrontation was described as an assault I wouldn't be surprised if the Astros GM filed a lawsuit. So far there are no reports or indication that steroids was linked to the aggressive mean streak. I think the prelude to the manager, player fight will be opposing mascots dishing out punches on the field. If it ever spreads into the seats it may pose a long game delay as stadium security scramble to contain the fracas.

Shaq talks too much trash in rap song, deserves to be admonished

Well, to my dismay another basketball player has fell out of grace in the public's eye. There was a time I admired Shaquille O'Neal. His performance and influence on the court were inspiring. Realizing his pro career is on the verge of waning out he has to come out with a rap song ridiculing Kobe Bryant to incite negative publicity (mainly for himself). First of all, Shaq needs to find another hobby or way to make money because he can't rap worth a sh*t! Believe me I've seen the video footage and it's not platinum material. Surely anyone can write more sensibly lyrics than the junk he came up with. Besides that what the hell did Kobe ever do to him?

I detect a bit of jealousy here... don't let the fans remind you if it weren't for Dwayne Wade your ass wouldn't have a championship ring with the Miami Heat. The same goes for Kobe Byrant, who was as big a factor in the Lakers' title runs as anyone. Don't make me take off the gloves, Shaq, BECAUSE YOU WON'T LIKE THAT! I'm not even a Kobe fan, but damn even I can admit he's a great athlete, arguable the best player in the NBA today and carried the Lakers to the Finals this year. Yeah, his team got blown out in the deciding Game 5, but I'm sure the whole team accepts responsibility for their scoring drought and inability to slow down the Celtics' attack. At least Kobe showed class and demonstrated sportsmanship at the end. Unlike you Shaq he doesn't go around talking sh*t to the media and rapping mindless, childish songs about how you think you're superior to him and asks him to taste you filthy butt hole. I can't believe it, but he's one sick, twisted freak!

All I can say is Shaq is off my top 10 favorite players now. To think he'd act so childish over a burnt out, over exaggerated feud. An Arizona police sheriff got so upset over Shaq's stupid behavior that he is stripping the honorary deputy badges given to the big fella through their police training program. Apparently, the publicity stunt with the rap song made him feel bad about being a wrong judge of character and didn't want Shaq to be linked anymore with his police department. I can't say that I blame him. It's time for him to put an end to all this hating and don't even think about releasing that rap album because nobody wants to buy it.

Teixeira lights it up against M's with 3 homers

The old Mark Teixeira has resurfaced. With the Braves trying to keep pace in the NL East they need all the extra power in the lineup possible. Luckily for them though they were facing the worst team in baseball at the moment in the Seattle Mariners. Behind 7 strong innings from Tim Hudson and Teixeira's pop (3 HR, 4 RBIs) at the plate the Braves went to triumph 8-3. With Chipper Jones absence due to injury Atlanta have a reliable hitter to fill the void. Catcher Brian McCain has the best average as regular starter without Jones in the lineup at .310. He also smacked a homerun in the 4th inning, his 14th of the season.

The main veteran leader now is Mark Teixeira who will be expected to be up the slack until the Braves other star slugger returns. Improving to 38-39 the Braves are 4 games back in the division. If they can hang up until the All-Star with Chipper vying for a Triple Crown this season ( 16 HR, 46 RBIs, .393 AVG ) they probably need extra pitching in their rotation to compete with the Mets and Phillies. Although Teixeira may not be voted into the All-Star game he's going to have an impact on the Braves run down the stretch. He's well on his way to a banner year!

MLB managers given the heave ho, clubs can't accept lack of talent for dismal play

Nobody likes a rotten apple in any group who's trying to be productive. For baseball teams who are sucking and stinking up the field blaming the manager all the time isn't right. Fans know poor performance when they see it and will vouch for coaches they respect, the ones clearly giving it their best. This week three managers got fired and were sent packing. First in line was Mets skipper Willie Randolph who received so much praise two years ago for leading the franchise to the playoffs and ousting the Braves for first place in the NL East. I guess that bit of significant history was forgotten as well as his morale with the players.

Why are the Mets so unsatisfied now? Just be patient and work out a few deals by the trade deadline. It's not like the Braves are going to take the division by storm again. Look, take a chill pill Mets management, step back and realize you can actually beat the other prestigious New York team which will be slammed with more scrutiny after loses. Plus get off your high horse and dish out the money for extra talent, tightwads. Their season could be going far worse such as with the Seattle Mariners. Their coach, John McLaren almost went off the deep end because he couldn't take the crappy play and negative attitudes around the clubhouse. The Mariners are dead last in the AL West and have the worst record in baseball at 26-47. Everyone within the clubhouse ought feel responsible for this nose-dive catastrophic tailspin in the first half of the season.

Poor John McLaren was so incensed and lost for direction with this club he vented his frustrations and anger in a live press conference unleashing a series of obscenities to get his point across to the media. Basically, what he was saying through the bleeped out words of emotion was: I can't put up with this sh*t anymore, I know damn well a miracle isn't in the works so get off my back. It's a shame managers in these situations have to be singled out and be the first ones to go. The third manager to get the boot was John Gibbons by the Blue Jays. Okay, this team is starting to piss me off! First they carelessly let former All-Star veteran and keen slugger Frank Thomas walk out the door, not caring to compromise with his lack of at-bats or giving a drop of crap about his contract. Then they're going to complain about being a potentially last place team and having no shot at the postseason. With that kind of mind set and attitude I'm sure they will despite it's only June and the team is just 5 games under .500 (35-40). Yes, they're in a tough division, but whining about it won't get them anywhere.

Sometimes there are no win situations in a managerial position. No matter what decisions are made teams fall apart one way or another. Unfortunately, it normally results with the skipper taking the plunge and having to find a new job. The older guys who's been around the block are used to taking the thumps and rolling with the punches. Former Phillie and Cub player, Larry Bowa even knew during periods in his coaching career that he was a defeated man, realizing he failed to deliver on his part and saved time by firing himself twice (Had no idea this was even possible or anyone felt so guilty for losing, but apparently it happened). That is one irrational, thought provoking way to stick it to an organization and cut ties with them. With tortured souls like McLaren in Seattle I have to believe after he received the old pink slip he had a few choice words: Up Yours!

KG's ecstatic celebratory rambling, a priceless live NBA moment

I've got to hand it to those remarkable Boston Celtics who were determined throughout the season and played with so much heart and athleticism in the Finals. It was no doubt in my mind they would be NBA champions before the historic series got underway with the Lakers. In fact Game 5 was a blowout much to the satisfaction of Boston fans and a surprise to everyone else. The highlight of the night for me though was KG's celebration speech or their lack of on live national TV. I thought the first question he'd be asked was, "KG now that you've won the Finals what do you plan to do? His response:

"Baby, I'm gonna party like it's 1999 drinking champagne and go bligging it up all night on the town with my fabulous ring. Oh yeah, I'm going to DISNEY WORLD! I'd also like to give a shout out to those bums managing the Minnesota Timberwolves, HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NOW B*TCHES! I finally gonna get my NBA title, no thanks to you dumb !*&$#! Oh, how sweet it is baby!"

Of course this isn't quite the reaction I'd hoped for personally. Rather he was so overjoyed he just lost control and kept shouting, "Top of the World, top world....top of the world baby! Woooooo!" So filled with emotion Garnett was partially lost for words and shared the spotlight with former Boston Great Bill Russell. Next to the much younger lean, mean rebounding machine Russell looked like an old white-haired dinosaur. He's still one of the greatest of all-time though. Since the top scorer in the series, Paul Pierce got such little camera time it was the All-Star Celtics forward's night. Moments like that in sports are priceless. At least he basked in the glory of victory in a respectable manner. Good for you KG, you've earned it.

Ken Griffey Jr. right for the D-Rays?

I heard about Ken Griffey Jr. being traded off and on for the past 4-5 years and he's yet to relocate. For young, motivated team in particular believes the superstar is right for the picking now. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are actually in the hunt for the playoffs in '08. More widely known as the underachieving D-Rays that other teams used to beat and batter with ease. Those days are over as they're playing inspired ball trailing only the Red Sox in the AL East and are in the market for a veteran hitter. However, will this potential deal give Tampa Bay the edge to counter the fierce AL contenders?

First it's a tantalizing offer for Junior as he's had few opportunities to reach the playoffs since leaving the Mariners in 1998. Then again it all depends how whether he has faith in the franchise and wants to move to Florida. His batting average is down this year, hovering at .245 yet still possesses the power to fuel a team's offense. Personally, I'd like to see Griffey stay in the NL though I know he's probably be a good fit for the D-Rays. Him hitting in the middle of the order and available to be used as the DH could benefit them in a great way.

The veteran slugger's presence and bat won't be enough without a few other quality starting pitchers. Plus I hate to say it being a Griffey fan and all, but the D-Rays have to consider the devastating injury possibilities. With a history of ailments he could go down at the worst time right before playoff time and slow down their stride. With any deal almost a risk is involved and the D-Rays will have to be relentless regardless in their run for late season success and postseason emergence.

Interleague Play: hot weekend matchups

Good baseball matchups are on tap this weekend as Interleague Play kicks off. A few first-time meetings between teams occur. Boston aims to maintain their AL East supremacy facing the Reds. Justin Masterson (3-0) takes the hill against Aaron Harang (2-9). With Ken Griffey Jr. already making history with his 600th homerun the Reds will try to avoid being bushwhacked in the 3-game series. The Yankees pray that Joba Chamberlain brings the heat in the opener on the road in Houston. Lance Berkman and company look to go for the long ball and improve to 34-34 after slowing down a bit. Yankees skipper Joe Giradi is finding out quick how difficult managing will be this season in a tenacious AL East.

In another highly anticipated series, the Marlins take on the D-Rays. It most likely will be a battle of pitching changes. Which ever team overuses their bullpen will lose the series. Tampa Bay is 24-10 at home and isn't back down from any competition. Expect them to sting Marlins pitching with an array of line drives. The Dodgers vs. Tigers series won't be one filled with dramatics yet a scrape between two struggling clubs. With trade rumors going around involving the Dodgers they'll wish they had at least another veteran to combatant the Tigers' star power and relentless attack.

The best team in baseball, the Chicago Cubs look to extend a 4-game winning streak heading into Toronto and continue their pace to set a new franchise record. They'll have maintain their confident stride without the injured Alfonso Soriano. A.J. Burnett (5-6) better hopes is curveball is on point because the Cub bats will be ready to rock his world. Interleague action only getting underway with scorching months ahead. Which teams will reign supreme by the All-Star break? For once it looks like it won't be those overrated Yankees.

Ken Griffey Jr. launches 600th homerun, sets milestone

With a usual sparse home crowd the Florida Marlins fell victim to baseball history. Ken Griffey Jr. with all eyes on him to reach a new milestone his career hit a 2-run blast in the lst inning off Mark Hendrickson. His 600th homerun put him 6th on the all-time list. The Reds went to win the game 9-4 as Griffey moves within 6 homeruns of Sammy Sosa. Everyone knows what the veteran slugger was capable of doing if not for all those injuries in years past. His career totals are more than enough to get him into the Hall of Fame after he retires. Playing 9 years in Cincy Griffey has yet to enter the postseason or have a chance to win a World Series.

As a overlooked club in the NL Central the Reds are 33-30 and nipping at the heels of the Brewers. It's possible for them to make a run before the All-Star break. Without the one of better rotations in the league they'll have to rely on the offense to carry them. Ken Griffey Jr. is on his way to another 30-35 homer season and draw closer to 3,000 hits. This season he's churned out 7 homeruns and 29 RBIs in 219 at-bats. Off to a good pace fans just want to see Griffey play and stay healthy.

Since I've always been a Griffey fan from his early days in Seattle I'd like to see him play in the playoffs. He deserves to at least have a shot at a World Series title before he hangs it up. At 38, the odds are against him catching Babe Ruth's historic mark of 714 round trippers. Then again, it's Junior so don't count him out yet!

M's Hernandez shuts out Red Sox 8-0

Fortunately the Seattle Mariners collected an easy win against a brawl-battered Red Sox team. Friday night after suspensions were issued to Red Sox and Devil Ray players for the bench-clearing melee this week Seattle took advantage facing a less potent lineup. Both Manny and Ortiz were out of action. At Fenway Park there wasn't much to cheer about as Hernandez held Boston to 6 hits and 0 runs while walking 3 batters in 6 innings. Coco Crisp got the start to centerfield for the Red Sox, who apparently will serve his suspension next week for charging the mound and throwing punches in the Devil Rays game.

Richie Sexson went 3-for-4 for the M's with 2 RBIs as part of the lineup's 11 hits. Ichiro drove in 2 runs with a single. Their offense finally sprung to life after a series of petty performances on the field. At 22-39 Seattle has the worst record in baseball. Due to this along with the club's lack of team effort, blunders, and misfortune prompted Coach John McLaren to go on a verbal tirade filled with profanities in a press conference earlier in the week. He later apologized for his choice of words, realizing his conduct was inappropriate yet was so fed up with describing the team's crummy play on the field he just lost it. I can understand his frustration and anger when players aren't producing and everything is going wrong. He knows his job is on the line and there are things he can't control. Letting off some steam back in the clubhouse and yelling at his players probably provided relief and broke the tension.

Even the loss at home Boston remains in first place in the East and won't back down from any challenge. They have a new rival this season in Tampa Bay creating more than friction and crossed words. Until Ortiz returns from the DL it's going to be a sizzling summer month where the Red Sox must try to check their emotions in check. They have a formidable rotation yet how well will the offense hold up until the All-Star break? Following the series against Seattle they'll meet up with the Orioles at home for 3 games. From there they'll bring out the lumber and look to go yard!

A tribute to Randy Johnson, the strikeout king

The history of the game would not be the same without Randy Johnson. I remember the days when he mowed down hitters while pitching for the Seattle Mariners. His tall, imposing presence on the mound shook up opponents. The best highlight of his career in my opinion was when he helped lead the M's alongside Ken Griffey Jr. past the Yankees in the ALCS during the late 90's. He's was so dominant that he was used in relief one game in the playoff series. Man, did Randy kick serious ass back then! There is no doubt the veteran southpaw set the standard for strikeout pitchers in baseball.

Yesterday he captured a historic mark in a game against the Brewers. He whiffed 8 batters in 6 innings to gain his 4,680 career strikeout. Randy Johnson (click for career stats) can still muster up the power and maintain good control at 49 when the average pitcher's career has long been over at that age. He's second on the all-time record in baseball now passing Roger Clemens. Despite recording the loss (starting lineup's fault) in the 7-1 yesterday route Johnson is well on his way to the Hall of Fame when his career ends. Plus he has a World Series title to his credit with the Diamondbacks. Congrads to Randy on reaching a new milestone in his career!

Red Sox demonstrate public display of affection while dusting off Orioles

When it comes to celebrating a victory after leaving an opponent with the bitter taste of defeat the Boston Red Sox are kings. Their 9-4 smackdown on the Orioles Sunday seemed that of a joy ride which ended with a heartfelt hug between Manny Ramirez and Julio Lugo (who appears to be in heaven) at the mound. This proves Major Leaguers are in touch with their feelings, carefree with emotion even after destroying a team's chance at a comeback by launching 3 homeruns (Ramirez, Drew, and Lowell) and having their starter go 6 quality innings. Luckily for the Red Sox Ortiz had the game off and didn't join in the playful camaraderie on the field.

Having the big DH hitter squeeze a teammate could result in a few cracked ribs or spinal cord. I can see why the Red Sox are all smiles, owning a 35-24 record. It's good to see the players can get up close and personal for once without allegation arising over HGH, steroids, or Viagra. That or how much they enjoy taking showers together in the clubhouse and what really happens in the trainer's room after hours....oh I'm sure it's only harmless fun! Enjoying their success in the month of May Boston looks to recapture first place from the D-Rays in the AL East. They'll close out their series today with Baltimore before heading home to face the D-Rays and Mariners.

Celtics vs. Lakers title showdown, a classic confrontration

The sky hook was a key highlight of the Lakers, Celtics battles for the NBA titles in the 60-80's. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar started the tradition then it was Magic Johnson taking the daring athletic shot into the teeth of the Lakers' defense. The 1-on-1 matchups made the championship series great. Such encounters included Russell vs. Chamberlain, McHale vs. Kareem, Bird vs. Magic, plus John Havlecik and Jerry West being key star performers making outstanding plays in route to an NBA title. The tense overtime games, sights, and legends are became part of basketball championship history.

Shaping up for another rematch from decades ago the Lakers have already advanced to the NBA Finals as the Celtics are up 3-2 on the Pistons awaiting their chance at destiny. With a win tonight they could start a new dynasty, adding to a new chapter in the Lakers and Celtics long-time rivalry. The two main stars which will come forth in the potential Finals clash will none other than Kobe Byrant and Paul Pierce. Sorry KG, I know you helped turn the franchise around this year, but you will be part of the supporting cast though will make significant contributions. The same goes for Paul Gasol for Los Angeles. His size alone and ability to score inside won't take the spotlight off the superstar running the show. I have to admit guard Jordan Farmar is a heck of a player, adds so much energy off the bench, but based reserves off the bench Boston has more depth and experience.

Bringing up the matchup between these two teams I have to mention Lamar Odom and Ray Allen. Two of the best veteran scorers in the league, which play second keel to the top players on their teams. Allen shoots over 34% from beyond the arc and is an valuable guy to have on the free-throw line during crunch time. The Laker power forward Odom is a threat from the inside and tends to slip the ball to teammates on the inside and catch defenders by suprise by dishing off while in the lane. With such a powerful, equally talented showcase this anticipated Finals showdown will be a coin toss. If I had to bet on one team it would be the Celtics. Their starting 5 I feel exceed the scoring averages of the Lakers. Plus Boston is such a driven, strong-willed team at home I think the fans could summon the ghost of Bill Russell and Bob Cousy to pull of a historic comeback win.

Avery Johnson out of a coaches box and straight into a Nissan

What is it with former sports players and car dealerships? The attraction seems inevitable. For ex- Mavericks coach Avery Johnson it's becoming a new investment venture. After being fired as the Mavericks lost in the first round of the Western conference playoffs Johnson has since started his own Nissan dealership in Northern Texas. Refusing to wait around for any coaching position the former NBA guard came up with a smart business plan to take advantage one of Americans greatest weaknesses: cars. There is no quicker way to sucker people out of their money than to sell cars.

I have to give Avery kudos for this endeavor. Sure he's only around 5' 7 and never dunked a basketball in his life yet that doesn't mean he can't be one hell of a salesman. For all I know he could sell manure to a Texas farmers (especially in Crawford to anybody like Ole' not-headed W). Good to see Mark Cuban couldn't take the stride out of Avery's step. Starting the Nissan business is a way to say, in your face douchebag! I think Avery will do a fine job with his natural enthusiasm, good natured attitude, and southern accent. Avery Johnson could shoot a promo with a cowbody hat on claiming he's slashing prices left and right. After customers arrive on the lot he'd then be able to stick it to them on charging high prices for add-on features.

D-Rays making noise, take over first place in AL East

Of all the teams in MLB I would have never expected the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to jump out to such a hot start. This low-tier team is putting the Yankees and Orioles to shame. Sunday a comeback was in the works as the Rays' finished with a dramatic outcome against Baltimore. Evan Longoria hit a game-winning RBI double to center scoring Carlos Pena. Starting pitcher James Shields pitched 8 innings, yielding 3 earned runs on 8 hits and a walk. Putting a 2 spot on the scoreboard in the 6th from an RBI single by Melvin Mora then a solo homer by Aubrey Huff the Orioles tied the game at 4. The D-Rays got to the Orioles bullpen in the 9th while Troy Percival nabbed his first win of the season.

I'm impressed to see such an underdog team standing tall in a fierce division. Having a 30-20 record coming into Memorial Day is quite an improvement. In the past Tampa Bay would already be considered out of any race and on pace to finish with one of the worst records in baseball. Not this year though because those D-Rays aren't stinking up the field instead they're playing with heart while quietly gaining momentum as the rest of MLB overlooks them. After last night Carlos Pena has 10 homeruns while outfielder Carl Crawford continues to connect at the plate. If Tampa Bay actually gets 20 games over .500 people will faint or have a arrhythmic stroke from the utter shock. Forget about the heckling and being the laughingstock of the AL because the D-Rays are on a roll. AL East you better recognize b*tches!

Mike Piazza, love or hate him but he's bound for the Hall

To announce I've ever been a Mets or Dodgers fan would be a lie. Both franchises have rich history and can boost championship glory. They couldn't stake their achievement without great players. The argument over whether retired slugger Mike Piazza will head into the Hall of Fame as a Met or a Dodger on his plaque to me is irrelevant. He will be revered as one of the best catchers of all-time and have a spot reserved in Cooperstown. His career numbers prove his HOF material: 427 Homeruns, 2127 Hits, 1335 RBIs, and .308 batting average.

Some fans think Piazza complained too much as a member of the Mets. His inefficiency with throwing runners out then moving to first base due to the problems with his knees was reason enough to get mad at the All-Star slugger and consider him 'washed up'. From a defensive standpoint Piazza was never the same after leaving the Dodgers. That didn't mean he became a terrible first baseman. He still hit for power and had clutch hits with his run with the Mets during the playoffs. His stints with the Marlins, Padres, and Athletics didn't along him to utilize his full strengths and attributes. As a DH he didn't show quite the production as the bat speed slowed down yet I'm sure the younger guys around him learned how to play the game with class.

As a Mike Piazza supporter the 16-year career didn't seem long enough. At 39 I'm sure he's most concerned about his family and his health after giving baseball some of his best seasons. To force him into a position he's uncomfortable with like trying to play third base wouldn't never worked. I just can't imagine 'Pepperoni' Piazza (old reference) diving for a lead drive or ground ball down the third base line. All he'd come up with most likely was a face full of dirt and a sore groin. He was a true catcher and knew his limitations on the field, which I respect. So why fight over what team he belongs to when he gets his call to the Hall. Remembering him as a Baseball Great should be enough.

David Ortiz slugs two homers in Red Sox 11-7 win

The big man is back in a groove for the Boston Red Sox. Displaying his power stroke in the Red Sox's 11-7 rout of the Brewers Sunday David Ortiz delivered with the clutch hits. He walloped 2 homeruns and drove in 4 runs. In an ever growing competitive AL East the heavy hitter puts Boston in first behind the hot Devil Rays. Given ample run support yesterday Josh Beckett turned in his 5th win despite giving up 4 homeruns. A 27-19 record to their credit the Red Sox aim to draw a comfortable lead over the rivaled Yankees.

With Manny Ramirez hitting .305 with 8 homeruns and 27 RBIs as part of the 1-2 punch in the middle of the order Big Pappi should continue to see good pitches in the zone. Whether it's over the green monster or the short fence in right field at Fenway the veteran slugger will hammer the ball. With May not over yet things are only beginning to heat up for the Bo Sox. Due up for them this week are the Royals and Athletics. Watch the ball soar when Ortiz gets locked in and rips AL pitching. Take control the AL East Red Sox!

President Bush never needs to be asked baseball questions again

With the economy still stuck in a recession the only true delight for many Americans during the spring and summer is the great National Past time. One of the quickest ways to ruin this joy is by interviewing George W. Bush about hypothetically starting a baseball team with the best position hitter and pitcher in the game today. First of all, the former Texas governor did own a team, the Rangers in which he f**ked up things so bad draining the team's payroll by making poor financial decisions. What makes anyone think this dimwit can manage a baseball club much less lead a horse to water? American men have seen what has happened to our country over the past 8 years and realize baseball may be their last treasured memory.

Okay, suppose somebody was crazy enough to allow Bush to run a baseball team again. His top choice for infielder/hitter is the Phillies' Chase Utley. The second baseman hits for power and shows solid defensive ability, but of all the great players in the game now Utley came to mind. Not thinking big-name again Bush responded by saying he'd go with the Blue Jays' Roy Halladay as the best pitcher. The most annoying part about the stupid interview was he was told he had the Yankees payroll at his dispense. Forget about any star power like David Ortiz, A-Rod, Ryan Howard, or Ken Griffey Jr. this dumbass wouldn't have the foggiest idea how many players to put in the starting lineup or rotation.

Even having any pitcher available and he wants....geez a terrorist ought to pummel him to death with a Louisville slugger while watching the game in the luxury box. The least that could happen for such idiotic answers would be for Bush to get drilled with a lead drive foul ball and catch it on camera. There is no better way to signify his lack of intelligence even when it comes to baseball. I think his head is spinning enough when it comes to handling national issues reiterated by the media. Imagine him in a press conference after a game, trying to explain why his team has lost 20 games in a row and he struggles to pronounce two Mexican ball players' names which are almost identical. He'd be on the verge of sh*tting himself! Let's make it easy for all of us and put on lid on asking Bush any more baseball questions.

Hornets' David West racks up career best against Spurs

Going back to New Orleans with the series tied 2-2 the Hornets didn't want to make any excuses. They knew their performance in Game 4 was lackluster and inexcusable. Taking the loss the hardest was All-Star forward David West. He felt everybody on the team didn't give it their best effort. Last night it was West who set the example and stole the spotlight, showcasing a career best 38 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 blocks. How incredible is that for a guy who had a bad back? Just imagine what he can do when 100%. The Spurs held control in the first half clamping on to a small lead until the 3rd quarter.

Chris Paul dazzled the home crowd once again feeding teammates and hitting big baskets in the clutch. His 22 points and 14 assists sent the San Antonio defense into a frenzy, unable to find a strategy to stop him. He helped the Hornets build a double-digit lead into the 4th quarter in route to the stunning 101-79 victory. Much credit to the Hornets' defense has to go to Tyson Chandler who guarded Tim Duncan, forcing him to 5-of-18 shooting despite hauling in 23 rebounds. No one else in the Spurs starting lineup had more than 20 points.

Almost setting the new franchise record, David West was 2 points away from breaking Glen Rice's mark of 39. All those who underestimated this young team have only energized their play in the playoffs. A Lakers, Hornets Western Finals duel may be in the works. With the Hornets up 3-2 heading back on the road with the one-two punch of Paul and West I believe franchise history is on the verge of being made. Go Hornets! Woooooooooo!

Cavs, Celtics series heating up

With the Boston Celtics up 2-1 on the Cavaliers this Eastern conference second round series is about to explode. Cleveland fans are gearing up for Showtime at Quicken Loans arena. Nobody can count out the Cavs and Lebron James until the last whistle. Although the superstar didn't have a record breaking performance in Game 3 his teammates spread out the scoring to carry them to a win. Don't expect Lebron to have another similar off-night because when he gets hot no one can stop him. Getting Big Z and Delonte West involved early sure takes less focus off him. Plus when veteran, Wally Szczerbiak can spark the offense with a 16-point effort and Daniel Gibson is knocking down threes the opposition is in trouble.

To the Cavs favor in the series the Celtics are 0-4 in the playoffs on the road this year, struggling to pull out the stops at crunch time. The Eastern conference league leaders know that Lebron's 5-of-16 shooting was only a faze and his 30 ppg average proves it doesn't happen often. I've got to think Lebron will ignite the Cleveland crowd and put on a another all-around showcase. It could be Jordan-isk or just simply a Lebron James earth shattering performance. Doc Rivers better have one heck of a game plan to shut down his cerebral attack tonight. Even the up the series, Go Cavs!

D-Rays on the attack, look out AL East

With the steady meltdown by the Yankees one team is finding the will to fight in an intimidating AL East division. Thanks in part to Toronto for saying so long to veteran slugger, Frank Thomas and the Orioles being distracted by the Miguel Tejada 'playing dumb' about his age interview guess who pulled into the driver's seat? The Tampa Bay Devil Rays refuse to be a whooping boy for the AL in 08, quietly gaining ground in their division. Sure the odds are against them with no real high market players on the roster, but usually they're around 10 games under .500 this early in the season. That's right the D-Rays have the 5th best record in the AL at 17-16, currently in second place in the AL East.

Scott Kazmir, the ace in the rotation is back from injury though lost his first start 7-3 against Boston on May 4. I think he's a key guy which will have a big influence on the Ray's success in 2008. Signing Eric Hinske added another clutch hitter to the lineup as he's already totaled 7 homeruns with 16 RBIs. Carl Crawford, the speedy defensive outfielder was another good investment to keep around. He's been pretty potent with the bat in last 2 seasons producing 24 triples, 157 RBIs while batting over .300. The D-Rays already have proven they can beat the Yankees. With rising star B.J. Upton being productive (.824 OBS, 33 runs) overall the offense is there. It's the starting pitching rather that will have to keep them in games.

The franchise struggled since it's expansion debut in 1998. A club record low is losses was set in 2002 at 55-106. Yes, quite a few grim years in Tampa Bay. History is about to change though. Off to a good pace in a intensely, dominated division the biggest threat before them is the Red Sox. They use to come apart by the steams now it's the Yankees. Turmoil, controversy, and injuries does that to a team even the richest in baseball. Oh snap! Watch out New York those D-Rays are on the prowl and ready to attack!

Papa John's owes Lebron apology, not just pizza

At sporting events concession stands wouldn't be the same without pizza. Fans just gotta have it. Cleveland fans, however may be staying away from one particular pizza chain. In the recent Cavaliers, Wizards playoff series, unbeknownest to me Pappa John's was running a promotion with T-shirts. Washington fans at the Verizon Center brought these T-shirts from vendors with full intention on taunting Lebron James. Since the Cavs superstar got fouled so much and complained (legitimate argument) about it to the refs some bitter a-hole decided to come with a brand of T-shirts embroidered with 'Cry Baby' on the front. The jeering and mocking didn't have much an effect as the Cavaliers cruised to a 105-88 victory in Game 6, advancing to the second round.

Obviously, someone in Washington D.C. was up to this lousy marketing ploy to riff Lebron. Now, in Ohio Pappa John's is offering pizzas to fans for 23 cents each in honor of James' jersey number (That's right time to kiss some ass). I can't imagine the hate mail and threats over the phone they've received. Forget about just the prank calls from teenagers. Oh, by the way what is the worldwide chain going to say or admit to Lebron James? A public apology is in order, and it better be sweet and straight to the point. Don't even think about offering him a year's worth of pizza either. Those thin ass slices never have enough sauce or toppings, which means the flavor sucks! Plus the Jalapeno peppers make me want to gag, ugh! I have a good mind just for the hell of it to order 50 large specialty pizzas under a fake name and phone number no longer in service and say it's for a birthday party. Then arrive there an hour later, claiming I only wanted 1 large pizza, get irate when a manager tries to charge me for the 50 before taking off without paying for anything while the Papa's John staff stands there with their thumbs up their asses. Knowing how Old Papa is already screwed due to bad business and promotion I'd probably settle for announcing I'm a Lebron James supporter and will no longer buy their distasteful product again.

King James ready to throw down, ends series with impact performance

Lead by example, that's what Lebron James has in mind to take care of the Wizards. He knows setting the tone is up to him. Cleveland and Washington have exchanged more than words in this heated, feisty first round Eastern conference playoff bout. Up 3-2 the Cavaliers look intent on ending the series on the road. With the personal rivalries, egos, and tension thrown in the mix it's shaped up to be an emotional contest which maby be another nail-biter. After two blowouts in the series, one by each team Washington composed themselves to pull out a stunning 88-87 victory.

The Wizards' Darius Songalia was suspended for slapping Lebron in the face during that game and will sit out Game 6. Too much trash talk has took away from the magnitude of this series. I expect Lebron to have to be fouled often and have plenty of chances at the free-throw line to help his team win. Big Z, Daniel Gibson, and Delonte West have looked sharp with crisp scoring games as the team captain has made them better by getting them involved when great passes off double teams.

Illgauskas has shot 53% in the series as Gibson hit 46% on three-pointers. Plus don't forget about Delonte's game-winning shot in Game 4. Washington's bigs have the pressure on them, realizing their team is down 3-2, but they plan on letting their combined efforts on the court speak louder than words tonight. It's still going to be a battle as the Wizards strive to even up the series. Foul trouble could be a big factor for both teams. I think it's going to be quite the proverbial gut buster!

A-Rod going to DL, Clemens' controversy too much drama for Yankees

Leave to the Yankees to generate more drama and turmoil for baseball. Living up to their legacy every season is a daunting challenge. Finally as a franchise they know what's it like to struggle and deal with injuries and outside distractions. I actually think it's a shame A- Rod went on 15-day DL with strained right quadriceps. The star shortstop is off to another great start. The Yankees are contending with the controversies surrounding Roger Clemens. I don't think the 14-14 record is the biggest concern yet George Steinbreiner has got to worry about his star power, where is it coming from now?

I think the Yankees are like a extended dysfunctional family. There is always complaining, arguing, and fighting (sometimes over money). I can see why the fan act the way they do, one actually falling from the upper deck trying to catch a foul ball. Sometimes a franchise needs a fresh approach when things get out of control. For New York they'll find a way to win when the 'new players' arrive mid-season and the revenue and contracts are shelled out like it's gasoline from an oil company. Not to worry Yankee fans, A-Rod will be back to don the uni and popular universal logo while walloping homeruns and having to be cope with another team slump.

Early season pitching letdowns

The price of a ball player these days can either do wonders for a team or wreak havoc. Owners, have seen in the first month have star attractions have not panned out. Shelling out the big bucks for players is always a risk. Injuries occur when least expected and teams crumple. Disappointing starts from Barry Zito has freted Giants' management, wondering why they signed him to an outrageous contract in exchange for a pitiful 0-6 record in April. The two Barry have sucked up too much of the payroll in San Francisco. The organization should've said no deal to one of them.

Atlanta isn't too pleased with Mike Hampton. His dismal pitching performances have left pretty to be desired as John Smoltz and Tim Hudson can't be expected to be work horses all the time in the rotation. Personally, I've never cared for Hampton. He's was way too overated when he played on the Mets and Astros. Sure a tough curveball to hit, but a waste of money when he loses his control and can't keep his team close in games. The same unfortunate starts have happened with the Tigers' Justin Verlander and the Cubs' Ted Lilly. Both have experienced bad luck in April and have yet to get it going. It's unfortunate they're 1-4 and their strikeouts are down. At least their salaries aren't over the top and will still have team value when their struggles on the mound end.

Hornets shoot for 3-0 lead tonight against Mavericks

The playoff matchups in the West are shaping up to be highly contested series. The Hornets though look to be in the best position as they take a 2-0 advantage into tonight's game on the road in Dallas. With Paul and the Hornets shooting lights out in Game 1 and 2 the Mavericks have the pressure riding on them. Setting those franchise records has to make New Orleans feel good, they're beaming with confidence and pride now. Chris Paul's red hot play has ignited the Hornets. His back-to-back 30-point plus games with 17 assists in Game 2 blew open the big leads in route to victories.

I'll have to admit the Mavericks are a better team at home, playing in a comfort zone with support from the home crowd. Yet when they can't counter speed and streaky shooting they come unraveled. Dirk's performance or involvement in Game 3 will have a big effect on the outcome. Josh Howard and Jason Kidd don't normally rack up high scoring numbers as the bench will be relied upon to pick up the scoring load. If the Hornets shoot over 60% in a half and duplicate another franchise records-breaking performance I don't know how the Mavs will keep up or stay in the game.

All those who claimed New Orleans didn't stand a chance in the first round may witness more history in the making in the best-of-7 Western conference playoff series. Since the Hornets haven't won at Dallas in 10 years pulling off another big win to go ahead 3-0 would be huge. I expect good games from Tyson Chandler, David West, and Jannero Pargo. The trio combined for 47 points in the 127-109 win at New Orleans. The starting lineup could easily score in double-digits again and run the Mavericks until they're out of gas. Dallas may need an offensive explosion of their own to take the sting out of this heated series.

Frank Thomas sac flies, commitment not good enough for Blue Jays

Toronto doesn't know apparently when they have a good thing going for them. Kicking Frank Thomas to the curve because he didn't want to ride the bench for a couple games is one of the most asinine things I've ever heard of in baseball. First of all, the man known best as the 'Big Hurt' has over 500 career bombs and doesn't deserve to put up with line of bull crap. Obviously, there were issues between him and the coach. I know the $10 million left on his contract wasn't the real reason the Blue Jays wanted to see him leave. If that was the truly the case I hope Frank told management to kiss his ass before walking out the door.

If this arrangement was a mutual agreement I can't imagine Frank was thinking clear. Sounds to me the future Hall of Famer got screwed over royally on this proposition. Why couldn't he just sit on the bench for a few games? Being a DH he's going to get days off anyway and being replaced by Matt Stairs in the lineup couldn't have pushed Thomas to the edge. I don't know why Toronto refused to keep an veteran All-Star slugger around in such a power-driven AL East. What MLB team wouldn't benefit by having Frank Thomas? Any team other the Yankees ought to pick him up as a free-agent.

I know fans don't want to see the Big Hurt retire just yet. Those career numbers are impressive and needs to be recognized and considered by the Blue Jays or other potential buyers in the market. Mistaking frustration of not hitting the baseball for an attitude problem was the main cause of the debacle. If differences can't be worked out Frank ought to take his experience and power bat where he can get respect.

Hornets face ultimate test in first round

The New Orleans was the forgotten team in the NBA for a while. Then they started winning and surprised everyone in the NBA Western conference. After a historic regular season credited with a 56-26 record the Hornets find themselves in a high-pressure challenge with the upcoming playoffs series against the Dallas Mavericks. I don't think it matters that much that New Orleans lost their last 4-of-6 games. Yet many critics feel the young franchise is running on flumes. I have to disagree because the Hornets beat some of the best contenders in the league to earn a no. 2 seed after tying for first place with the Spurs in the Southwest division.

Chris Paul put up lofty numbers among star point guards such as 21.1 ppg, 11.6 assists, and 48.8 % shooting from the field. Everyone knew he earned a spot in the All-Star game. The talent around him only made this team better as the season progressed. Tyson Chandler and David West are key players who have been overlooked. Whether it's crashing the boards, adding a scoring touch, or smothering the opposition with pressure defense the pair are vital to the Hornet's run. The Mavericks coming into the first round series as the favorites seem to have it all. Their experience, depth, and talent can be overwhelming yet the Warriors delivered the knockout blow to them last year.

Dallas would hate to go down again in the first round. That's why I feel the Hornets face the ultimate test. By utilizing their strengths in speed and scoring off transition with timely defensive stops the Hornets can make this one hell of a series. Having a veteran coach in Bryon Scott who has the playoff exposure will also be valuable to the team. Other playoff matchups won't be as thrilling due to the disparity in overall records. For example, Atlanta vs. Boston there is no need to even think about that series. The Hornets fended off the best in the West, playing to the beat of their own drum. I see their series being a challenge of youthful exuberance vs. veteran star power.

Wind patterns and new stadiums effecting early homerun totals

With all the new baseball stadiums built in recent years fans have grown accustomed to seeing a massive output of homeruns. Down the left and right field lines at 315 and 320 feet players certainly can rack up on long ball totals. Just noticing how the wind effects play on the field, there are more chances for errors yet scoreboard operators have to take these conditions into consideration before making a decision. Chicago is known as the windy city and in yesterday's game between the White Sox and Tigers everything went to the home team's favor. The big band came from Paul Konerko's grand slam in the 5th. A deafening blow to the Tigers. Jim Leyland took a different approach with his team after the loss, scolding them for their lack of performance.

Also there were a few 1-run games such as the Rangers and the Blue Jays. The contest didn't end on a high note in extra innings. A sacrifice fly was hit to put Toronto up 5-4 and go on to get the win. Nearly the same result occurred in the Cubs and the Phillies match-up. Derek Lee made a game saving defensive stop which made a big difference. All through this game the wind was a contributing factor which hurt and helped both teams. The Cubs first baseman sprung for 3 and 2 RBIs as well in route to the 6-5 victory. A error at first allowed Chicago to score the go ahead run in the 10th and notched Kerry Wood first win.

Teams will have to rely heavily on their bullpen because of the field conditions and power surge by opposing hitters. The lopsided scores baffle fans, nobody wants to see errors all the time in a game, but it happens. Further into the season players will be settled in and more comfortable than now. As the weather heats up so will the star players. In April teams are really just starting to work out the kinks. Guys need extra rest sometimes and that's okay. In a few months the baseballs will be soaring out the ballparks. Babe Ruth would want it that way as well the great Red Sox, Yankees rivalry to continue.

Warriors powered by Baron Davis' 33 points

Baron Davis lead the charge to victory Tuesday, drawing the Warriors closer to a playoff spot. Experiencing another remarkable season despite the off and on player injuries the Warriors won't quit. Being in such a fierce Western conference Golden State has fought hard to survive. The 140-136 win over the Kings showed their will to succeed. Baron Davis delivered with 33 points and 9 assists. The Lakers and Mavericks will be a thorn in their side, but the Warriors' have dealt with being the underdog in the past.

As the season dwindles down nearing the playoffs Golden State fans must be proud to see how the franchise has made a big turnaround and become a major contender. I like the team chemistry. Their emotions ride so high during games that they thrive off all the energy around them. It would be great to see them in the playoffs. A day off will allow the Warriors to rejuvenate as they get set to play the Nuggets on Thursday before taking on the Clippers and Suns.

Davidson sparks major upset against Georgetown

The underdog reigned supreme Sunday as Davidson fought off the Hoyas 74-70. Few small teams such as Davidson has shown the tenacity to overcome huge obstacles. Delivering the offensive punch Stephen Curry paved the way, scoring 30 points. His efforts helped the Wildcats rally from a 17-point deficit. Now they go on to the Sweet 16 joining a talented pack of talent. No one can underestimate their sharp shooting and ability to go on wild streaks. Guard Jason Richards also notched 20 points in the win as a complimentary effort.

Nobody can dare say Davidson isn't a threat in the tournament. With a 28-6 record overall their competition better take them dead serious. They look on to higher horizons as they will hook up with Wisconsin (3) which shapes up to be a tremendous game. I think it will come down to a 2-3 point game and Wisconsin will get the victory. It wouldn't be out of the ordinary though if the Wildcats headed into the Elite 8. I just think their opponent has a more high powered scoring starting lineup. Stephen Curry will make it interesting with his sweet shooting touch. Best luck to both teams.

UNC ready to do battle against Mount St. Mary's

The Tarheels look to pick up where they left off and enter the NCAA tournament with a burst of energy. Winning the ACC championship against Clemson proved to be fruitful, earning a no. 1 seed. They have to get out early against Mount St. Mary's and don't let up on the defensive pressure. Everyone rooting for the Heels will have high expectations for Tyler Hansbrough as he's delivered so many times in the clutch this season. With UNC's two main point guards got injured the hard-nosed, tenacious junior carried the team on his shoulders. A new challenge awaits them tonight. They can't get too comfortable in this first round matchup because it could come back to bite them.

Learning from the Duke vs. Belmont game, avoiding the same mistakes as their rival, UNC can be better prepared by studing game film. I have a feeling Coach Roy Williams will have his troops charged up with strategies all laid out. The Tarheels though will be responsible for executing these plays. North Carolina thrives on fast-break chances and ought to run as often as possible. Since the Tarheels only allow around 69 points on average by their opponents they shouldn't face a scare against the Mountaineers who held a 11-7 record in the Northeast conference and are 19-14 overall. The action gets underway tonight at 7 p.m. ET on CBS.

Alex Gordon aims to improve performance in Spring Training

I have never been a Kansas City Royals fan. They're just not appealing to me. The franchise has hit new record lows in overall losses in the past 5 years. They have yet to reel in the pool of talent which will make them a winning team. Last year's rookie Alex Gordon was drafted as a top pick hoping to change the Royals outlook. He's looking for a fresh start in Spring Training. Too many veterans have bounced around on this team leaving the young blood on the roster to fend for themselves. I know scouts and the Royals had high expectations for the rookie third baseman. His numbers weren't bad at all: 15 homeruns, 60 RBIs, .247 average, and 12 SB.

It's still going to be a disappointing season for KC. They added a few new additions in outfielder Jose Guillen and starting pitcher Bret Tomko. The last time the Royals won 70 or more games was in 2000 when they finished with a 77-85 record. If Gordon gets lucky he'll become a free agent after his contract expires and move on elsewhere. He's too talented to stay on such a horrible team which usually finishes dead last in the American League. Spring Training will at least give the young guys like Gordon chances to hone their skills, get fundamentals down pat, and improve their overall game. After all the players will learn it's too bad that the Royals will suck again anyway.

Tarheels become ACC champions, gain top seed in tournament

How about them Tarheels! What a splendid finish to the regular season. Winning the ACC tournament on Sunday was icing on the cake and a great highlight to another special season. Clemson battled them and made it close down to the final minute. UNC slowed down the Clemson offense and hit the big shots in the waning shots. A three-pointer by Marcus Ginyard put the game out of reach. Tyler Hansbrough's contributions and hard work were huge, not for just the championship yet the whole ACC tournament. His game-winning shot against Virginia Tech was stunning.

With the Tarheel's 32-2 record they advance into the NCAA tournament as a no. 1 seed scheduled to play most of their games in Charlotte, North Carolina. Coach Roy Williams doesn't believe they have a distinct advantage with the home court to their credit. He thinks it's all about how successful they are on the court, speaking from experience as his 1995 Kansas team made to the 3rd round in Kansas City and lost to Virginia. It really comes down to momentum in the second half unless a team is getting blown out and has no chance at a comeback. The Tarheels will have plenty of supporters packed in the seats. Energy from the crowd won't be a problem.

UNC joins Memphis, Kansas, and UCLA as no. 1 seeds entering the tournament. I know there will be a couple of big upsets. I'll have to look over the bracket again to make my picks since there are some tough matchups. I don't see the Heels running into any major challenges until at the least the Sweet Sixteen. With Ty Lawson back running the offense and the bench playing well I like their chances. One thing I'd like to see more of though is Hansbrough getting more foul called in the paint. He's got whacked several times and not be granted trips to the free-throw line. The refs better call it like they see it in the tournament or else they should be thrown out the game.

A one in a lifetime at-bat for Billy Crystal

I didn't know Major League Baseball made miracles happen for celebrities. I guess it also helps if you attend most of your favorite team's home games, publicly support that team, and have a crap load of cash. The New York Yankees keep surprising people with their recent generous ways. First with announcing they will have a special event next week at Virginia Tech and then allowing actor Billy Crystal to play in a spring training game as the first inning DH. George Steinbreiner really wants to be endearing to fans. He sure doesn't have a problem filling seats in Yankee Stadium every year. I'm glad to see the Yanks extend favors and special opportunities.

Getting to make a debut as a Yankee at any age is a one in a lifetime chance. Just be allowed to step into the batters box and take some hacks seemed to be good enough for Billy Crystal. Sure he struck out, but it was a memorable moment not just for him though also for baseball fans. The Pirates pitcher he faced didn't float any pitches in the zone for him. I'm sure at the next All-Star celebrity and Old Timers game everyone will be ribbing Crystal about his performance. Many fans thought he should have retired before being cut by the team. That way he'd leave the game with dignity. Now if he had the bases loaded and went down on strikes it would've been one of the worst debuts of all-time.

Excited fan manages to greet Lebron on court

I know maintaing security everywhere is more of a concern than it ever. In sports arenas it was should be a top priority. The recent publicity exploit at Madison Square Garden involving a determined basketball fan to race onto the court and shake Lebron James' hand calls their security into question. In today's world this could be potentially disastrous or just plain unsafe. I realize the Knicks have grown accustomed to the fights among fans and their bitterness towards losing, but unauthorized people can't just roam the court to ask for an autograph or greet a favorite player up close. This guy who managed to slip by security probably had no intentions other than to congratulate Lebron on his scoring performance and let him know he was a big fan.

This story would've created a real scare and probably caused the media to blow a gasket if the enthusiastic fan asked the Cavs superstar to sign his shoes and jersey and all of a sudden a handgun fell out of his pants. The same would go for any character who dashed to the sidelines with a wild look on their face and started hollering, "OH SNAP! LEBRON THAT DUNK WAS OFF THE HIZZLE FOR REAL!" Such random outbursts (even though maybe affectionate) shouldn't be allowed at sporting events. I'm not sure what Lebron was thinking when he invited this fan to a later game between the Cavs and Nets. I really like Lebron and admire him, but he may have opened the flood gates to fan interference.

The NBA needs to intervene into this arrangement because it will give other fans the idea this sort of behavior is okay and is rewarded. I know King James cares about his fans and want to keep them satisfied, but buying them tickets as a special gift isn't the answer. He also has to take his own safety into consideration. Fans can enjoy the game from their seats and send shoutouts or boo whomever they want from there. The whole walking on court and getting up close with the players will cause panic and pose a distraction if it's not stopped.

Doc Rivers not satisfied with Celtics' 50 wins

Sitting on top of the East the Boston Celtics are on a 9-game winning streak. To an already stellar star-studded lineup a new veteran guard joins the team in Sam Cassell. He cut ties with the Clippers (real smart move) to play for a contender. With all the positives surrounding the franchise they still aren't content with their 50-12 record. I know they don't want to be too cocky or take the rest of season for granted, but the Celtics don't have to be concerned about the playoffs until that time comes. The only team close to them is the Pistons. Both teams have clinched their divisions.

Doc Rivers was interviewed after the Celtics' 100-86 win over the Sixers. He commented about how the Celtics aren't going to bask in the glory of 50 wins and they have loftier goals to achieve. I understand he wants his players focused and not to get carried away with their success. That doesn't mean his team can't celebrate a little and get excited, come on Doc where is your spirit? With Garnett, Pierce, Allen, and Cassell healthy Boston will be a scary team to face in the playoffs. When a starter like Garnett can hit 11-of-14 field goals for 26 points as he did last night other teams will have a tough time containing their offense.

I think coming down to the final week of the regular season schedule Boston can relax because there will be no point in overextending themselves and risking injury to one of their stars. I can't say they're the best team in the East, but they sure look like it right now. Their real competition in the conference will be the Pistons, Cavaliers, and Magic. As a team the Celts average 101 points per game (allow 90 by opponents) and shoots 39% on three-pointers. Their defense will be tested to great lengths though, and is a weakness they can improve upon. They may not have the long incredible streak of the Houston Rockets, but are well on their way to a fantastic finish.

Rockets on fire with 17-game win streak

One thing is certain in the NBA Western conference, it's going to be a fight to the finish. The Houston Rockets expect to give the other contenders a run for their money. Losing the injured Yao Ming for the rest of the year hasn't slowed down the streaky Rockets. They're riding a 17-game win streak. They've come off an impressive 113-98 win over the Mavs on Thursday night. Tracy McGrady fueled the offense, leading his team to a comeback against a conference opponent they had lost their last 10-of-11 meetings against. McGrady churned out 31 points, delivering in the clutch while adding 9 assists.

Houston is coping well without their star center and have achieved a 41-20 mark, placing them 3rd in the Southwest division, 2.5 games out of first. The starting lineup is playing at another level since Yao went on the shelf and believe they can endure the remainder of the season schedule to clinch the playoffs. It's going to be a bummer for those teams in the West who will win 50 games and still won't enter the playoffs. With the defensive strength supplied through starters Shane Battier and Rafer Alston combined with McGrady timely, consistent scoring the Rockets are well on their way to late season success. Houston will be okay if the bench continues to make solid contributions. They will try to extend their win streak against the Hornets on Saturday.

Tarheels back to no. 1, prevail over FSU 90-77

There is a new no. 1 team in the land and the North Carolina Tarheels couldn't be happier to be in the driver's seat again. They have to also be pleased that star point guard Ty Lawson is back on the court. Though, he's not at 100% he's presence and ability to keep the offense flowing is pivotal to UNC's success. Last night in Chapel Hill the Tarheels made the most of Senior Night and put on a great show. Florida State forced the Heels to work for leads in the first half. The hot shooting from the field did the Seminoles in and their inability to make defensive stops in the final 10 minutes.

North Carolina shot 54% in the game to Florida State's 43%. The dominant force once again inside was Tyler Hansbrough. He was the top scorer with 20 points while pulling down 9 rebounds. The Carolina Seniors, Quinton Thomas and Surly Wood got their moments of glory, leading the floor in the second half to standing ovations. It's good to see the seniors get their chance to shine and play well on a special night. Points off second chance offensive boards was put for the Tarheels. They out rebounded their opponent 41-27. With the win wrapped up the Heels look to get the no. 1 seed in the ACC tournament.

The end of the regular season schedule is most anticipated for UNC as they'll square off with the nemesis on Saturday in an ACC showdown. I know this game has potential for greatness and usually comes down to the final possession or goes into overtime. If the Tarheels head into the tournament with a 29-2 (counting on a victory over Duke) that will be awesome. I have to believe when the Tarheels are at full speed and strength they're one of the toughest teams to beat in the nation. Now suck on that Blue Devils! Woooooooooo! GO TARHEELS!!

Wizards knock off hot Hornets, Jamison flourishes with big game

The New Orleans Hornet took the Western conference by surprise. With a 1.5 games behind the Spurs in the Southwest division. they came into Washington last night coming off a big win against the Utah Jazz over the weekend. Unfortunately, the Wizards refused to become another one of their victims. The offensive firepower wasn't there for the Hornets who normally play with high energy and offensive intensity. Without Gilbert Arenas or Caron Butler on the court Washington found their scoring solution in Antawn Jamison. He lead them to a 101-84 victory scoring 28 points and grabbing 9 rebounds.

Washington took a lead into halftime and continued to build upon it. The guys off the bench chipped in well to help out with 35 points. The deciding factor down the stretch was made free-throws. Back-to-back threes late in the 4th quarter put the game out of reach. Although the Wizards are a game below .500 they won 4 of their last 5 games without their 2 central pieces to their offense. They really have to push and play like there is no tomorrow to earn a final playoff seed in the East. When and if they get Caron Butler back some serious ground could be gained in their division. For now the young guys filling temporary starting roles and more minutes off the bench will have to step up their game.

Bringing back the retro 70's basketball style

On a fitting day such as Leap Day a part of basketball history is being relived in the new comedy movie, Semi-Pro. I like the idea of a historical piece on the ABA league. Back then the short shorts were in as well as the puffy afros. It was a time when white guys never rushed shots and made a good 10 passes on each possession. The object I think back then not to outscore the opponent, but to see how long you could play keep away from them. Plus witnessing a white player dunk was a rarity. Only until stars like Julius Erwing entered the league did the real razzle dazzle finishes evolve.

In an era where disco was popular the players all sported the thick sideburns and briskly mustaches. The knee high socks were a big deal too for some reason. If an athlete chose to maintain such an appearance today he would definitely feel out of place and probably be heckled to the point of no end. Today some players like to wear the headbands, color-coordinating them to their jersey. In the 70's, uniforms were so tight on players defenders probably uncomfortable guarding them so close. The headbands looked so snug that it was cutting off oxygen to the brain. I did like those red, white, and blue regulation basketballs though because at least you could spot them easily on the court if had suffered from poor farsighted vision.

Warm-up drills seemed to set more on a serious tone in that era than they are now. No screwing around was allowed and a routine of fundamentals was expected. That meant no missed layups. If players failed to maintain 100% accuracy the coaches benched them for long periods and made them run extra suicides in practice. Today's penalties in the NBA are a far cry from the stern repercussions in the 70's. For getting a physical confrontation with a coach could result in a player being banned from the league. I can only imagine back then what would have happened to former Golden State Warrior Latrell Sprewell if he would've lashed out and tried to choke his coach.

Shaq settles in with Suns yet the big fella needs time to get in shape

The lowly Miami Heat must be feeling like the most unlucky team in the NBA. Sure they managed to end an 11-game losing skid, but that won't get rid of the bitter sting which will last the rest of the season. A week or so ago I made it clear how I felt about the Shaq trade. Phoenix definitely caught the better end of the deal while Miami completely disregarded how it would effect the franchise and minimize Dwayne Wade phenomenal efforts. Now the worries of playing for a real stinker are over for Shaq. He showed vast progress in last night's win over the (Okay Memphis sucks big time in the West this year though Shaq still deserves credit for getting a double-double).

Thanks to the nifty passing from Steve Nash and the star power surrounding the Diesel things are starting to look up for him with the Suns. No longer does he have to shield his ears from the relentless echo of boos and be expected to abide by former Coach Riley's pointless offensive play sets (like these strategies ever worked earlier in the season, Pat) None of that bothersome chatter is a problem for him anymore. The 127-113 win over the Grizzlies Tuesday night showed the big fella in a whole new light. His improved performance of 13 points and 11 rebounds was only overshadowed by second year rising star Rudy Gay who notched 36 points for Memphis.

It appears as if Shaq is making a nice fit for his new team (In my eyes I can only see him as a Miami Heat player no matter how bad they suck). What I'm concerned about is his minutes on the floor. Last night he only played 24 minutes which has got to change. I know Grant Hill and Steve Nash will be sucking up most of the minutes, but it's high time Shaq really works on improving his endurance. The mobility obviously isn't what it used to be and that's understandable at his age plus with the injuries.

Come playoff time, however the lumbering up and down the court will be a crucial factor. I just don't want to see Shaq get lazy and start cherry picking and not getting back on defense. If the superstar veteran center stays fit (maybe take a little extra time to practice free-throws) he'll regain his dominance in the low post and heighten his defensive presence.
